Sean Tarry is a master at getting his runners spot on for the big days. He saddles 16 runners at Turffontein tomorrow including the mare Callmegetrix and the filly Rodeo Drive in the Allied Steelrode-Onamission Charity Mile that heads a 10-race feature filled card.
The Gr2 event has attracted a good mix of runners and those charities represented in the 16-runner field can all be hopeful with an upset a distinct possibility.
However, Tarry’s pair met last time out with Rodeo Drive almost delivering a 20-1 shock with short-priced favourite Callmegetrix getting home by a neck. Rodeo Drive is bottom weight on Saturday and 1kg better off with her stable companion so the inference is obvious as and both have favourable draws.
Fabian Habib will have been disappointed with 14 gate for Confederate who was back in mustard form with a convincing last win. The Hollywoodbets Durban July is the only real hiccup in his form line but he likes to go forward and Rachel Venniker will need some luck in running if Confederate is to find a favourable slot with a couple of runners on her inside also likely to be keen.
That said, Confederate looks smart enough to overcome the draw.
If Habib was disappointed with his draw, Erico Verdonese will have been mortified with gate 16 for Choisaanada who also likes to go up handy. The son of Querari found himself caught for closing speed in the recent Jo’Burg Sprint Stakes over a trip on the short side but he was only a length behind the lightly weighted and progressive Tin Pan Alley. He does get the vastly experience Gavin Lerena aboard which is in his favour.
There are plenty of others in with strong chances, the more obvious ones being Atticus Finch, Spumante Dolce and Otto Luyken with Fairview raider Zinovi something of an unknown quantity but from a stable that is red-hot.
The PA kicks off with the Golden Loom Handicap where Charming Cheetah enjoyed reverting to a sprint when beaten by the smart Miami Mountain last time out and she has the benefit of a light weight. Chieftain has been rested but won his last two over course and distance while Karate Kid is overdue another win. Surprise package could be raiding King Of The Gauls who has been under performing of late but the raid suggests that he is back to his best.
Elegantrix is likely to start a short price for the Gr3 Starling Stakes, first leg of the Pick 6. She may just have needed her seasonal debut when second behind World Of Alice in a Graduation Plate and that run should have brought her on. However, she faces three unbeaten fillies in Stormy Day, Ovation Star and Warm Reception. Stormy Day was scratched from her intended start this last Thursday as was Ovation Star who was due last Sunday. Warm Reception was equally impressive on debut although easing in the market.
The Gr3 Graham Beck Stakes is a fascinating contest. Tarry saddles Tin Pan Alley who ran on stoutly to win the Jo’Burg Spring Challenge from a fast-finishing Atticus Finch who was giving the winner 10kg.
Mike and Mathew de Kock have three smart runners. Whispering Death looked a little lethargic in his last start but it was his first since March so understandable. Muzi Yeni rides with Callan Murray opting for Miami Mountain who got the better of Charming Cheetah at just his third start. Third on the De Kock’s list is runaway maiden winner One Eye On Vegas with Hollywood Racing’s retained rider, Sean Veale aboard. Paul Matchett’s gelding Zalatoris was 1.5 lengths behind Miami Mountain last time out but did have the worst of the draw on the inside track. He now has pole and the extra furlong will suit.

RACE 1
Watch betting on unraced runners. (2) MAJOR ARCANA ran well on debut and should go very close with Muzi Yeni who retains the ride. (3) TINTIN is another who ran well on debut however does return from a rest. He looks sure to progress hence he will be a strong contender if not in need of the run. (12) WITCH HAZEL placed at 33-1 on debut and with that first run under the belt he’s likely to improve and cannot be ignored here. (8) PLATINUM HILL hasn’t shown much however he is open to improvement on his third racecourse appearance. (2-3-12-8)
RACE 2
(11) IN BETWEEN ran well on debut and the extra 160m should suit. (13) SAKURA HANAMI wasn’t far on debut and will be a strong contender coming from the powerful Sean Tarry yard. (5) QUIET WINTER is knocking on the door and will be a big runner here hence she must go into all bets. (2) VAMANOS drops back in trip after a good run when finishing second so warrants respect here. (11-13-5-2).
RACE 3
(13) AFRICAN PRIDE takes on some hard knockers here however looks up to the task. This is a very strong race and he will be tested, his last win was ultra-impressive and it’s no secret the connections rate him very highly hence he will be the top choice. (9) KARATE KID is holding solid form and will be in the firing, his last run was a cracker so include in everything. (1) QUANTUM THEORY goes well this trip hence he should be respected here, although carrying a big weight he has the services of Craig Zackey so is a must include. (8) SHELDON has been holding consistent form and won’t be far. A case can be made for may other in this contest and its suggested to keep an eye on the market as well as trainer comments when making your final decisions. (13-9-1-8).
RACE 4
Open looking contest. (1) ELEGANTRIX ran another cracker in the last start, she will be a strong contender here. She is classy and will make her presence felt in a big way. (4) PRETTY PERSUASIVE is holding solid form and looks progressive, her last start was a cracker when she was only beaten by a narrow margin hence she needs to be respected. (6) STORMY DAY is unbeaten and could be just about anything. She has impressed in both her wins and is one to watch. (11) VALENTINA BALDUCCI is highly thought off and can get involved, she is capable of getting into the action and can be included into larger perms. (1-4-6-11-2-3-9).
RACE 5
(1) TIN PAN ALLEY is holding excellent form and packs plenty of class, he will take some beating here. (2) ZALATORIS ran a cracket in the last start and looks progressive, he needs to be respected. (4) TENJIKU is capable of getting into the mix and can go into larger perms. (14) TRUST won well on debut and could be anything. (1-2-4-14)
RACE 6
WORLD OF ALICE (1) won her comeback run in facile fashion at the Vaal and should be primed for this race. She is the firm first suggestion. TEO TORRIATTE (8) is in good form and showed tremendous guts to win last time. She should be right there. WOMAN’S WORLD (11) went close last time and can be given a huge place chance again and POPLAR PARK (12) is a must for the quartet. (1-8-11-12)
RACE 7
CHOISAANADA (11) does have a wide draw to overcome but gets the services of Gavin Lerena. His form is good; he is clearly talented and has strong each way claims. BARBARESCO (2) looks to have had a beautiful preparation for this race and will be a huge runner. A must for all bets. CALLMEGETRIX (13) is a good mare that is in winning form and can go close. OTTO LUYKEN (7) and many others have got chances. (11-2-13)
RACE 8
ENFLAME (10) ran an encouraging race last time and has solid overall form. In form rider Serino Moodley gets the ride. HOTARUBI (1) has the ability to pop up and threaten in a race like this. UNITED COUNCIL (4) can be forgiven for the last run and can place. MO MENT (6) stays very well, is in winning form and could well be the one they all have to fear the most. Big runner, respect and include in all bets. (10-1-4-6)
RACE 9
PERFECT MIRACLE (6) seems a talented filly having won two from two and is confidently selected to remain unbeaten after this race. BLIZZARD SNOW (5) is ultra-consistent, should be right there and is a must for everything – strong each way chance. MYSTICAL MISS (7) and FROZEN FANTASY (1) are worth including in trifectas and quartets – bold efforts can be expected form the pair. (6-5-7-1)
RACE 10
UNITED OFFER (4) caught the eye when making a smart winning debut and could end up being absolutely anything. LIMERICK LACE (2) has shown some ability and can surely serve up more than she did last time – expect better. TUSCAN ROMANCE (3) ran a good race first up out the maidens and should be in the first three. SEASON’S GREETINGS (5) is a must for the quartet. (4-2-3-5)
