The Turffontein Standside nine race meeting on Valentine’s Day today is headed by the Gr 3 Betway London News Stakes over 1800m and it could be a good opportunity for the classy Betway Summer Cup runner up Olivia’s Way.
Olivia’s Way will enjoy the tough 1800m trip and on official ratings is only half-a-kilogram under sufferance with the best weighted runner Fire Attack, who is under a bit of a cloud at present. Olivia’s Way loves the Turffontein Standside track and although she would probably prefer 2000m the advantage she has at the weights here makes her the one to beat from a middle draw of four out of ten. However, the form of jockey Ryan Munger is a touch concerning. Last year, during the off season for his base in Canada, he had 38 wins out here at a strike rate of 19.19 and was the fourth most successful jockey in his three month stint. This season he has only had six wins at 8.96% so far in his stint and is the 15th most successful jockey in the period he has been here. The other filly in the race is Willy Meet Again, who is officially 4,5kg under sufferance with the best weighted, but she is on the up and this William Longsword four-year-old should enjoy the trip being out of a Philanthropist mare. The Ultimate King was third in the Summer Cup, beaten 1,50 lengths by Olivia’s Way, but he is now 1,5kg worse off. He is held in high regard and the best might not have been seen of this four-year-old Vercingetorix gelding yet. Fire Attack would be the automatic choice if he was at his best. However, he did not have a good preparation for the L’Ormarins King’s Plate and then finished a lacklustre last, so he has probably been freshened up and will likely need this run, which is likely part of his preparation for the Gr 1 Premiers Champions Challenge on April 4. Busstopinhounslow has a lively chance as he will relish the course and distance. He is half-a-kilogram worse off with Olivia’s Way for a 2,30 length beating in the Summer Cup but was a touch unlucky in that race.
In the first leg of the Pick 6 over 1160m Taskmaster ran second to a promising sort in Stoneywood last time and can go one better. Scorpio ran a good second last time and the form has been franked by fourth-placed King Redoute coming out and winning. Warning Light is by Gimmethegreenlight out of Gr 1 winner Siren’s Call (Elusive Fort) and would not have to be a superstar to win this. Stokesy has shown enough to be able to earn here. Sky Pilot disappointed last time but can do better and can’t be ignored.
In the fifth race over 1400m Sutherland won with authority last time and can repeat the feat despite a six point raise as he has some good overall form in his career and an 85 merit rating is about right. Salute The Flag is off a competitive mark and can be involved from a fair draw. Bristol Hercules has always struck as one with plenty of ability and he is well drawn over a suitable trip. It’s Personal is in fine form and should be right there if able to overcome a wide draw under Muzi Yeni. Paul Revere is a distance-suited hard-knocker but he has a wide draw.
In the sixth over 1400m Winds Of Grace won her maiden with authority over 1600m and looks capable of rising above this merit rating of 70. Peregrine Falcon is knocking hard and should be right there again from a plum draw. Mocha Frappe has probably not fulfilled her potential to date so she would not be a surprise winner. Oklahoma Smokeshow is in good form and from a good draw should be in the shake up. Vava Vegas is knocking hard and should be in the shake up.
In the eighth over 1160m Night Bomber has been ultra consistent since arriving from the Cape and is distance suited so should be right there off his current competitive mark. Black Egret has the ability to contest the finish here and should be cherry ripe having his third run after a layoff. Frozen Fantasy has some fine recent form and should be in the shake up. Gimmethegoodlife has pace and the ability to kick on so should be thereabouts. The Specialist was promising as a two-year-old and won last time after a steady drop from a merit rating of 115 to 88. He could follow up.
In the last race over 1160m One Tiger bounced back with a good run last time over 1200m and is only one point higher. Legendary is capable of a strong finish and has a chance. Longsword is also able to run on well and can earn with a clear run. Can You Danse has the form to be able to earn in this line up off a much reduced merit rating. Captain Selvie is in fine form and has a chance despite having to carry topweight.
In Race 3, the first leg of the PA over 1160m, Traditional Belief made a good debut and the form has turned out to seem better than the form of Miss Fantastic.
In the first race over 1160m Staggerwing made a good debut to finish second to the smart Secretary Bird and is an obvious choice here.
In the second race over 1160m Prayersandpromises in the one to beat but Dear Doc also made a good debut and with expected improvement should be right there. Ehhfifteenkjoe has run two decent races against good sorts and Sherlock Holmes made a fair debut against a promising sort. Stage One should show some improvement.

After producing a career best in the Grade 2 Ridgemont Green Point Stakes in December, Jet Force has credited himself with a lofty rating of 115. Whether that is going to take him to the winners’ box in elite races remains to be seen but he certainly has the credentials to win a Progress Plate, race 8 over 1400m at Hollywoodbets Durbanville today.
Always held in high regard by trainer Des McLachlan, he took the high road during the height of the Cape summer season. To be fair, had he not finished 1,9 lengths behind Dave The King in the Grade 2 over 1600m, he would have looked out of place even in this event. Rated only 93 before, the hike was expectedly huge to 120. The handicapper reduced him to 115 after a no show in the Grade 1 L’Ormarins Kings Plate at the start of the year. McLachlan has his hands tied over the races he targets off his current mark. Whether he tries Durban this winter remains to be seen but there will not be many races which fit ahead. He is a three-time winner so a victory will take him away from a Progress Plate ever again. Then the thinking begins. During winter in Cape Town, A Stakes races are at a premium.
One treats judgement on a career best against such good horses who could help raise performance with some cynicism. Could the effort be a flash in the pan. His wellbeing and need to gain a run under the belt is beyond doubt. McLachlan has entered two companions into the race to keep the small field alive. Green Planet and Devil A Saint are nowhere near this league. Stable jockey Grant van Niekerk is carded to take the ride.
Powerandtheglory is a neat performer who surely has some more wins to come. He has filled the runner-up spot in his last two efforts and he could step forward if Jet Force fluffs his lines. He received 10,5kg from Snow Pilot on World Sports Betting Cape Town Met day and he fired late to the line to finish 0,4 lengths behind the former Grade 1 winner. Powerandtheglory is a half-brother to former dual Grade 1 winner Double Superlative. He does not have the same class of his brother but he is surely not far away from another visit to the No 1 box.
Captain West is so hard to read. He has stacks of ability but winning does not come easily. Often he runs a bold race in defeat to some high class rivals before running exactly the same race against milder opposition. One of these days, he will break through and perhaps go on a streak with some confidence on his side. Nobody would be shocked if he won this but he is not easy to rely on.
Miss World could be interesting off a light weight and she loves this course. Beware is a promising three-year-old who might need to unlock a little more to win but he could end up at a high level in a few months. His run in the Grade 1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas in December was full of merit when 6,7 lengths behind Jan Van Goyen from a terrible draw of No 14.
Epernay was possibly surprising on debut but encouraging all the same. She finished fourth behind One Dance over 1200m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth. She seemed to hit the line with something in hand. Apprentice Sifiso Bungane is back aboard for Michelle Rix in race 1 over 1250m and if she has made any progress from the run, she could back-up with a potential winning performance against a fairly weak field. The 4kg claim could be what tilts things in her favour.
Iona Castle has been so costly to follow but with five places from five career starts, her exit from the maiden ranks must be near. She looks ready to win in race 2 over 1400m. She gets closer with every run. Her career best was over this course and distance last time when she finished second, 0,4 lengths behind South Of France.
One always taps around gingerly with top weights in open maiden races but Bonelli seems to have the right credentials to win race 3 over 1600m. Every run has been better and he went close when last seen. He finished 0,4 lengths behind Prairie Dawn when trying this trip for the first time. He should get the job done now.
Lark’s Song is a full sister to the gallant stakes winning mare Rainbow Lorikeet. Just like her sister, she loved going 1800m last time when she shed her maiden in good style. She has many hoops to jump before getting to the levels of Rainbow Lorikeet but it seems like trainer Andre Nel has found her wheelhouse. Andrew Fortune stays in the saddle. She runs in race 4 over 1600m and she can complete back-to-back wins.
Anything can win race 5 over 1000m. If pushed in a corner, Gravity could complete a quick double for Richard Fourie and Piet Botha who combined for his win last month. That came over this course and distance when he beat off Country Time by a neck.
Saachi One seems to be settling down and coming to hand. She has winning claims in race 6 over 1000m. Still lightly raced, her behaviour has often let herself down despite having untapped ability. Her last start was a huge step in the right direction when she finished fourth behind Wyze Declaration over 1250m at this course. Respect is given to William’s Woman who was in that race and she was only 0,75 lengths behind. There should be little to choose between them.
Star World runs a race later over 1250m and she is from the same piece of form when she was third behind Wyze Delcaration. If Saachi One or William’s Woman win or run a pleasing race 35 mins earlier, that will enhance confidence about Star World who ran her best effort for a while last time. Richard Fourie is aboard for Vaughan Marshall.
There are plenty of chances in race 9 over 1400m but a chance is taken on Gran Canaria. He had the finish run out of him by the promising Touched By Angels last time over this distance at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth. Fortune stays aboard which must be a positive sign. Failing him, Boogiefied, Ireland Forever, It Is My Time, Marcus Aurelius, and San Pedro warrant consideration.

RACE 5
8 GRAVITY won well at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on the 21st of January, he was given five points for that win, if he gets some luck in running from a tricky draw on Saturday, he will go close to winning again. 3 COUNTRY TIME was eating up the ground late behind Gravity last time, she ran a super race, now that she is better off at the weights, and she has a good draw, she definitely has a winning chance. 1 SICILY had absolutely no luck in running behind Gravity on the 21st of January, he was a long way back turning for home, and the gaps only opened up late for him when he was low flying for third, he should get the run of the race on Saturday from a good draw, watch him closely. 7 BONNE BOUCHE has run some fair races of late, jockey Andrew Fortune sticks with this mare, she has dropped even further in the ratings, if she gets away from the field at the right time, she will be hard to peg back. (Brandon Bailey: 8 – 3 – 1 – 7)
