RACE 1
2 BANDMASTER has been knocking on the door and is distance suited with the in-formed Chad Little aboard, but he will have to overcome a tricky draw. 1 JET QUERARI has been in useful form on the Highveld, but will have to bounce back from a poor last run. 4 CLIFFIE CLAVIN is in good form and has a plum draw over a ideal distance. 7 AM STILL WINNING ran a cracker last time over 1300m and will be cherry ripe for this race, but does have to overcome a tricky draw. (David Thiselton 2-1-4-7)
RACE 2
6 BLACKBERRY BREEZE had useful KZN form and made a good East Cape debut and over an ideal trip has pole position. 2 DYNALLEY is always thereabouts and will appreciate the step back down in trip and has a fair draw. 5 WINTER EMERALDS has been a bit under pressure off this merit rating, but is capable and Richard Fourie is up from a tricky draw. 4 CORAL CREEK had a tough task in his last two starts and back in this company could have a chance. (David Thiselton 6-2-5-4)
RACE 3
3 BAIE MOOI has won both of his starts in fine style and can make it a hat-trick from pole position. 2 TINTAMARRE has won his last three starts and will attempt to remain unbeaten in the East Cape over this suitable trip from a fair draw. 1 IMAGINABLE has done well since being relocated to the East Cape and on form should be thereabouts from draw 5 out of 6. 5 TRAVEL MASTER has been thereabouts in all of his last three starts, but does have a tricky draw here. (3-2-1-5)
RACE 4
4 GOLDEN PAVILION is in fine form and over this suitable trip will make another bold bid. 6 KINGS AGAIN has been in good form in two starts since being relocated to the East Cape and with Richard Fourie up here should go close. 5 CROWNED HORNBILL is capable of a lot better than his last few starts and with the blinkers off again he could make his presence felt from pole position.7 AADEHYA is 1,5kg better off with Kings Again for a 1.25 length beating and has a chance. (David Thiselton 4-6-5-7)
RACE 5
2 JAMBO SANA has bounced back to form recently and over this ideal trip has pole position so should go close. 5 ALEX MILLER has a plum draw and is 0,5kg better off with Jumbo Sano for a head beating so he should be right there. 7 GREENLIGHT DANCER had his best recent start over this trip so from a good draw back over this trip he should be in the shake-up. 8 AUGUSTA ROSSO has Richard Fourie up and has an easier task than he had last time when running in a Listed race, so he is an interesting runner here. (David Thiselton 2-5-7-8)
RACE 6
4 EXQUISITE had some decent Cape Town form and should go close on his East Cape debut. 2 FIRST WISH is drawn in pole over a trip that appears to be too sharp, but he did do well over this trip earlier in his career so could cause a surprise. 6 BOSNAY ran a cracker last time over 1600m and with a repeat of that effort he could be right there from a good draw with the same 4kg claimer up. 7 UMZOLOZOLO steps back down to her best trip and from a good draw should be in the shake-up. (David Thiselton 4-2-6-7)
RACE 7
3 RED WILLIAM has won his last two starts easily over 1600m, but is also effective over this trip and has a plum draw with Richard Fourie up. 9 FLASH LIGHTNING is 1kg under sufferance, but does have a 2.5kg claimer up and if repeating his last start he could be in the shake-up. 2 MAKHACHEV is knocking hard and will be a big runner over a suitable trip if able to overcome a wide draw. 1 GEORGE HANDEL goes for a hattrick from pole position and 4 kg claimer Dookhit stays aboard so he has a chance. (David Thiselton 3-9-2-1)
RACE 8
7 OLIVE OYL won her maiden in good style when stepped up to 1600m and looks capable of improving again over this trip. 3 COSMIC CLIFFS is in hard-knocking form and gets the trip, so should be thereabouts with a 2.5 kg claimer up from a fair draw. 8 TAKE YOUR TIME is always thereabouts and now has a 4kg claimer up from pole position so could go close. 9 PRESERVE FOREVER went close last time from pole position but now has a wide draw. (David Thiselton 7-3-8-9)

Garth Puller never really got the universal praise given to the likes of Michael Robters, Piere Strydom and their ilk but he rode in a time when as one trainer put it after his jockey was stood down – and I quote loosely – “ I could throw the colours into the weighing room and never be disappointed with who picked them up,” that’s how strong the riding ranks were in his time.
So when his picks out a rider, his opinion is backed by a lifetime of experience at the top end of the riding ranks.
He gave the apprentice who rode Major Tommie at his last start a piece of his mind on his return to the paddock as the lightly raced son of One World was a winner before shifting ground behind the eventual winner.
Major Tommie was not well in at the weights for the Progress Plate that headed the card at Hollywoodbets Scottsville yesterday but Serino Moodley made not mistakes as Major Tommie got the better of the useful filly Hierarchy with well-backed favourite Luhamba Phambili a well-beaten third.
Duncan Howells was confident of a decent performance from his filly but commented pre-race that he expected a good effort but that she was not fully wound up but she did leave Muzi Yeni one short of his 2500th winner.
Stuart Ferrie was always destined for a life in racing. His father, ‘Scotch’ and his mother Elaine, hardly ever missed a Scottsville meeting usually accompanied by Avison and Mary Carllisle. His mother was a fierce critic of my scribblings at the time but they unfortunately passed away before Stuart was finally thrust into the limelight as a fully fledged trainer.
Scottsville was his parents happy hunting ground and they would have been enormously proud of his two winners yesterday.
It is always dangerous to ‘label’ horses when the opposition consists of mainly unraced runners. That was the case as the well-supported Son Of Rafeef was sent out deep in the red. However, Ferrie saddled another son of Rafeef in Cognac and under good friend Sean Veale it was no race. Cognac was never in danger of defeat as he cruised clear of Son Of Rafeef and the form behind Hah Lah is looking to be stronger and stronger.
He followed up with a nail-biter as Master Silvano kept the late-charging first-timer Sword Speed at bay in the first leg of the Pick 6.
The connections of Showgirl were out in force for the first and they were not disappointed as Peter Muscutt’s filly charged home under hands and heels from Richard Fourie.
This was only her third run, he first as a four-year-old and coming off an 82-week break.
Always well thought of by Muscutt, she pulled up with a fractured pelvis when well fancied at her second outing at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.
It’s been a long way back to the track but it was worth the wait as she showed a mountain of speed and was ever challenged.
Blain Hamilton, one of the many owners of the filly and who has been involved in the sport for many decades including as a jockey’s agent, was ecstatic with the win but opined that she would probably prefer a mile but because of her injury he didn’t think it would be wise to send her around a turn.
The ear-drums are still ringing after Natasha and Nathan Kotzen bellowed home their first timer Chicarito in the second for owner Sid Moodley. Still as green as her apprentice rider Dezahn Louw, Chicarito eventually pulled clear of her rivals to beat fellow debutante The Marquee.
After Showgirl, this was the second winner for James Armitage’s Sandown Stud-based sire Soqrat.

Count Huhtikuu can be a star
PUBLISHED: September 21, 2025
David Thiselton The James Crawford-trained Count Huhtikuu was the star of the show at Turffontein Inside on Saturday when winning a strong Graduation Plate over 1600m by a cosy 1,30 lengths under Callan Murray and the win clinched a double for Heinrich Rix’s Stonehill Stud and his underrated stallion Royal Mo. Crawford had called this […]
