After a relatively quiet period Peter Muscutt’s stable has starting to turn again and he saddles Golden Rule in a tough handicap, seventh race on the nine-race card that heads proceedings on the turf at Hollywoodbets Greyville evening.
Golden Rule has come well since returning from a break and has won two of his last three starts over this trip including one over course and distance. He has a handy galloping weight and the best of the draw, so he ticks most of the boxes.
But it will not be easy. Drawn alongside in gate two is Mike Miller’s gelding Winter Games who may just have needed his last run after returning from a break. He does boast the scalp of Gr1 winning Gladatorian to his credit although he was in receipt of the grandstand that day – 10.5kg to be exact but he is obviously more than just useful. Muscutt also saddles Plazza Accord who has consistent form over the trip and was close-up at his last outing. Jabu Jacobs knows his mount well and stays with the ride. Nathan Kotzen sends out Amor Fati who started at 150-1 at his last outing and failed narrowly over course and distance in what would have been a major boil-over. He has a light weight, loves this trip so could go one better at decent odds.
Staying races are few and far between so it is encouraging to see a dozen runners line up for the C Stakes over 2400m, fifth race on the card.
Dean Kanneeyer’s runner Continental Express had to play second fiddle to Spectacular last time out over 1900m but the son of Vercingetorix has shown his best form over this trip and is now 2kg better off at the weights which should see him turn the tables on Glen Kotzen’s runner. Serino Moodley has opted to stay aboard Spectacular ahead of The Mikado who finished behind Continental Express in their last two meetings in spite of Frank Robin’s gelding being better off at the weights although he carries a hefty 63kg. Towards the bottom of the handicap, veteran King Bavarian stays the trip and gets lumps of weight from the above trio which should make him competitive.
The Place Accumulator starts in the third where Green Glow could prove to be a banker. He has put in two smart efforts over the distance and if not going one better he should at least finish in the first three. Dangers could come in the form of Director who has been consistent and was a beaten favourite over the trip last run with first time blinkers and Sword Speed who was narrowly beaten when making a cracking debut at long odds. If he can build on that effort he will be a big factor.
The first leg of the Pick 6 could go the way of Darryl Moore’s Crimson Typhoon who made a promising debut on the poly over this trip. She could come on lengths from that run. Amelia’s Legacy raced green on debut for Frikkie Greyling but although a well-beaten third she should improve with the experience and this trip will suit. Garth Puller’s Echo has been trying further of late but reverts to what may be a more suitable trip. Her 4kg claimer retains the ride.
The sixth is a competitive handicap with many in with chances. Cappellino goes well over the trip and has the best of the draw. Wendy Whiteheads runner should be in the mix. Gareth van Zal saddles Prankster who has been in good form of late and goes well over the trip. He should be competitive. Averni Princess was a narrow winner last run for Lous Goosen but has a more experienced jockey aboard and can go in again.
The seventh is another wide open handicap. Siesta Sunset got a five-point raise in the ratings after her last win but she did have a few of the opposition behind her that day. However, her chances are further complicated by a wide draw. Paul Gadsby has two speedy mares in Vision To Achieve and Princess Hannah, both over their best trip but Vision To Achieve has the better turf form and may be the pick. Ayuwi Yuwi has the best of the draw and with a handy galloping weight should be in the mix.
Mike and Mathew de Kock could provide the best bet of the day sending out Queen Braganza in the last. She was a comfortable winner on debut on the poly and was also well supported in the market. She could prove a cut above this field in class. Dangers may be Are You Sure who was touched off from a wide draw last time out and steps up to what could prove to be a more suitable trip and Princess Goldie who only got a three-point raise in the handicap for her last win and is consistent.
Alyson Wright could hold the key In the first leg of the Bi-Pot where she saddles Priory Terrace who is in good form over the trip but does carry top weight in this Open Maiden while stable companion Chimes At Midnight is the mount of stable rider Athandiwe Mgudlwa. She finished a distant third last run but the winner Ovation Star looks to be high class. Of the others, Champagne Problems has made steady recent improvement and was narrowly beaten last run but does have the worst of the draw. Pizazz found some market support on debut, possibly because of Richard Fourie being aboard but she should come on from that debut run.

RACE 1
2 LIGHT THE FIRE 3 CLEARTHERUNWAY 9 WAR EMPEROR 11 SKIPPER ZIP
Summary: Little form to go on with raced runners so keep an eye on the market. Of those that have run, LIGHT THE FIRE (2) didn’t feature from a wide draw when trying a mile for the first time. Back over what looks to be a more suitable trip with first time cheek pieces could see him improve. CLEARTHERUNWAY (3) was well beaten on debut but the winner looks to be high class. WAR EMPEROR (9) was just ahead of Cleartherunway and has Callan Murray aboard for Gary Rich who also saddles Light The Fire. SKIPPER ZIP (11) found some market support on debut. He never showed but the experience should see him improve. (Andrew Harrison: 2-3-9-11).
RACE 2
4 PRIORY TERRACE 6 CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT 11 CHAMPAGNE PROBLEM 3 PIZAZZ
Summary: Alyson Wright could hold the key. PRIORY TERRACE (4) is in good form over the trip but does carry top weight in this Open Maiden. However, she does look capable. CHAMPAGNE PROBLEM (11) has made steady recent improvement and was narrowly beaten last run. She does have the worst of the draw. Summary: CRIMSON TYPHOON (7) made a promising showing on the poly over this trip. She could come on lengths from that run. AMELIA’S LEGACY (10) raced green on debut but although a well-beaten third she should improve with the experience and this trip will suit. ECHO (4) has been trying further of late but reverts to what may be a more suitable trip. Her 4kg claimer retains the ride. SOVEREIGN GEM (2) was not too far back on debut and can come on from that effort. (Andrew Harrison: 7-10-4-2).
RACE 5
5 CONTINENTAL EXPRESS 2 SPECTACULAR 6 THE MIKADO 3 KING BAVARIAN
Summary: CONTINENTAL EXPRESS (5) had to play second fiddle to SPECTACULAR (2) last time out. However, Dean Kannemeyer’s charge has shown his best form over this trip and is now 2kg better off at the weights which should see him turn the tables on Glen Kotzen’s runner. Serino Moodley has opted to stay aboard Spectacular ahead of THE MIKADO (6) who finished behind Continental Express in their last two meetings in sprite of Frank Robin’s gelding being better off at the weights and carrying a hefty 63kg. Summary: Competitive handicap. CAPPELLINO (1) goes well over the trip and has the best of the draw. He should be in the mix. PRANKSTER (5) has been in good form of late and goes well over the trip. He should be competitive. AVERNI PRINCESS (7) was a narrow winner last run but has a more experienced jockey aboard and can go in again. LITTLE CRACKER (3) was a recent maiden winner on the poly. He could have a soft handicap landing in a moderate line-up. (Andrew Harrison: 1-5-7-3).

Summary: Wide open. SIESTA SUNSET (10) got a five-point raise in the ratings after her last win but she did have a few of the opposition behind her. PRINCESS GOLDIE (8) only got a three-point raise in the handicap for her last win. She is consistent and can go in again. ICY LANCASTER (4) has shown up well in two recent sprints.
