The much-anticipated Golden Horse Speed Festival takes place at Hollywoodbets Scottsville this afternoon with all four Grade 1 Sprints over 1200m boasting increased prize money of R1-million. The Golden Horse Sprint (Gr 1) sees the return to Pietermaritzburg of Lucky Lad, who won the Gold Medallion (Gr 1) by five lengths as a two-year-old last season. Having recently won the Senor Santa at Turffontein in spectacular fashion, Lucky Lad is back in top form and, with Richard Fourie in the irons for trainer Sean Tarry, he could secure his second Grade 1 victory.
Coincidentally, Lucky Lad jumps out of stall gate 11, the exact same barrier position he was allotted when winning the Gold Medallion last term. He looks well handicapped this afternoon and will no doubt give his many supporters a huge run for their money.
Top weight, Dyce, won the Cape Flying Championship (Gr 1) over 1000m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on 27 January when beating the high class Thunderstruck by half-a-length and there can be no doubting his class. His two subsequent runs on the Highveld were terribly disappointing and the decision was made to geld the 5yo son of William Longsword in April. He makes his first appearance as a gelding today and quite what to expect is uncertain. Even at his very best, Dyce won’t find it easy to concede 5,5kgs to Lucky Lad, but trainer Lucky Houdalakis has turned to Piere Strydom to try and coax the best out of him.
Strydom and Houdalakis have previously teamed up to achieve success at the highest level, most notably with JJ The Jet Plane. Who will ever forget Piere’s masterful ride when winning on JJ The Jet Plane at Shatin racecourse in Hong Kong.
But perhaps Lucky Lad has most to fear from the Brett Crawford-trained Surjay, who finished a close third in this race last year when beaten under a length by Gimme A Prince. More recently Surjay was an equally close third behind Lucky Lad in the Senor Santa Sprint and the son of Vercingetorix is now 2kgs better off. While he has not won for 567 days, Surjay has run many brilliant races in defeat and today could be his time to shine.
Crawford has two other strings to his bow in the form of I Am Giant and At My Command. Of the two I Am Giant is preferred as he split Lucky Lad and Surjay in the Senor Santa but is now 3,5kgs worse off with Lucky Lad. That said, I Am Giant is drawn in pole position and he could enjoy the run of the race.
Hopes that a locally trained horse could lift the laurels rest principally with the Peter Muscutt stable. He saddles the very useful Quasiforsure and with just 54kgs to shoulder, the 5yo gelding by Quasillo will feel he is running “loose”. Last time out in the In Full Flight Handicap, Quasiforsure had 63,5kgs on his back and finished an excellent second behind King Of The Gauls to whom he conceded as much as 11kgs. However you structure your play in this year’s renewal of the Golden Horse Sprint, be sure to keep Quasiforsure on your side.
Melech is another who could rise to the occasion as he is unbeaten over 1200m, and his last two efforts over further are best ignored. But Lucky Lad holds the key to the outcome of this race and hopefully he doesn’t lag too far off the pace in the early stages. He possesses an incredible turn of foot, but I am sure Fourie does not want an action replay of his last-gasp victory in the Senor Santa. Surjay and Quasiforsure are taken to follow him home in what is expected to be a very keenly contested event.
Allan Robertson Championship (Gr 1)
The R1-million Allan Robertson Championship for 2yo fillies over 1200m opens the Jackpot of Grade 1 Sprints and while many in the 11-strong field will be lining up at the tricky Hollywoodbets Scottsville racetrack for the first time, the same cannot be said for local KZN hopes, Quid Pro Quo and Just Reckless. The latter has raced four times at Scottsville for three wins and a second and the daughter of Gimmethegreenlight was impressive when taking out the Strelitizia Stakes at the end of April.
Perhaps even more eye-catching was her run in the Fillies Nursery at Turffontein two months ago when runner-up behind the highly talented Little Ballerina, arguably the best 2yo sprinting filly in the country right now. With Little Ballerina sidelined due to a viral infection, Just Reckless gets the chance to grab the lion’s share of the prize and earn trainer Mike Miller victory on the Grade 1 stage.
Quid Pro Quo is unbeaten over track and trip and went down narrowly over 1000m to Just Reckless earlier in the season. She is now 3kgs worse off with Just Reckless, but Quid Pro Quo has improved a great deal since then and could be more than equal to the task at hand. Kabelo Matsunyane retains the ride on Just Reckless while S’Manga Khumalo will be aboard Quid Pro Quo for trainer Barend Botes.
But this is no two-horse affair and early favourite is the Dean Kannemeyer-trained Gimmie’s Countess who scored an easy and impressive debut victory on the Polytrack two weeks ago. She beat Spirit of Lavana by more than four lengths and the latter franked the form by winning last week. Gimme’s Countess has a royal pedigree being out of the mare Real Princess, former winner of the SA Fillies Sprint at this race meeting a few years back. She could be anything and may prove too classy for her rivals here.
Sorceress Supreme won by an amazing eight lengths from a poor draw at Greyville on her Champions Season debut three weeks ago and her form prior to that in the Western Cape suggests the daughter of Erupt warrants utmost respect. Another daughter of Erupt, Kindred Heart, has scarcely put a foot wrong and could get into the mix while Candice Bass-Robinson’s Symphony In White has won two of her three starts to date and is clearly one for the short-list.
Gold Medallion (Gr 1)
Cymric has valuable experience of winning at Scottsville and he caught the eye when capturing the Godolphin Barb at the end of April. He steps up to 1200m this afternoon but that should not pose too many problems for the well related son of Vercingetorix.
One More, by leading sire of two-year-olds, One World, scored a dominant debut victory in March and that form line has been franked on multiple occasions. His trainer Lucky Houdalakis has a good appreciation of what it takes to win a race like the Gold Medallion and One More’s inclusion here, at only his second start, must be taken seriously.
Pistol Pete won his first three starts in thrilling style, but those were all over 1000m and he tasted defeat for the first time in the SA Nursery over 1160m when third behind Fire Attack. The going on that day was very much on the soft side and he could well see out the extra on a firmer and faster track today. Tarry won three of the Grade1’s at this meeting last year and he brings Proceed into town. He could be held by Pistol Pete but the well-bred son of Gimmethegreenlight is on an upward curve, and you ignore the Tarry/Fourie combination at your own peril.
Tarry also saddles Cosmic Speed who won his first start as a gelding quite cosily. He had only one start prior to being gelded when finishing second to subsequent Nursery winner, Fire Attack, form solid enough to suggest he could have a say in the outcome. Grant Van Niekerk takes the ride. Winds of Change, half-brother to Safe Passage and last week’s Woolavington winner Silver Sanctuary, has finished runner-up in all four starts to date, including a very good second behind the brilliant One Stripe in the Cape Nursery. It would be some achievement to shed his maiden ticket at Grade 1 level, but Winds of Change is highly rated and would not be winning out of turn.
South African Fillies Sprint (Gr 1)
For fillies and mares at weight-for-age, this year’s renewal appears wide open and there are many with winning claims. Candice Bass-Robinson holds a strong hand with October Morn and Winter Cloud both of which bring solid Cape form into the race. While October Morn will be having her first ever career start at Scottsville, Winter Cloud won the Strelitzia Stakes here as a juvenile, before finishing second to Mrs Geriatrix in last season’s Allan Robertson Championship.
That prior course experience could stand her in good stead and a further positive is that stable jockey Aldo Domeyer will be in the irons, whereas October Morn will be partnered by Raymond Danielson who piloted the daughter of Trippi to victory in the Sceptre Stakes back in January. On form there is little to choose between October Morn and Winter Cloud, but my slight preference lies with the latter.
Fourie and Tarry team up with the back-in-form Mrs Browning who will be having her third run back from a lengthy lay-off. Recently she beat Time Fo Orchids in the Camellia Stakes at Turffontein and she could again have the measure of Johan Janse Van Vuuren’s filly. Tarry also saddles Winter Greeting who finished fourth in the Senor Santa behind Lucky Lad, I Am Giant and Surjay. Although in receipt of weight in the Senor Santa, that level of form suggests Winter Greeting is worth more than just a passing glance.
The good-looking Asiye Phambili was an impressive winner of the Pointsettia Stakes over track and trip at the end of April and a repeat performance will see her go very close here. Mike de Kock’s White Pearl has been knocking loudly at the door for her first feature success and will appreciate stepping back in trip, while both One Fell Swoop and Shantastic cannot be ruled out.
Not an easy race to nail one’s colours to the mast but I am going to side with Winter Cloud, October Morn and Asiye Phambili as my top three choices. Exotic bet punters will however need to cast their nets a lot wider.
Lucky Lad to complete the cycle

In many cases race horses come to form in yearly cycles but whether or not Sean Tarry takes cognisant of that observation is open to speculation but his horses do tend to follow that trend, especially when it comes to the big Hollywoodbets Scottsville meeting.
Recently retired Thunderstruck was a case in point. After winning the Gr1 Gold Medallion, he was in the wilderness until finding form in the Gr1 Golden Horse Sprint the following season where he pushed star sprinter Gimme A Prince all the way to the line.
The Tarry-trained Lucky Lad falls into that same category when he lines up in the Gr1 Golden Horse Sprint that headlines the four Gr1’s at Hollywoodbets Scottsville today. A facile winner of the Gr1 Gold Medallion his form tailed off for the balance of the season. He has since returned from a lengthy break and posted his well being with victory last time out. He will be fully primed for Saturday’s race and one can expect a big effort.
Brett Crawford’s strategy of prepping his horses on the Highveld and travelling has been a sound strategy and he saddles Surjay who was beaten under a length by Lucky Lad in the Gr2 Jehan Malherbe Senor Santa Stakes. He meets his rival on 2kg better terms which in theory puts Crawford’s runner ahead of Lucky Lad, however I expect Lucky Lad to make the required improvement. Duncan Howells saddles Cruise Control for the first time, the gelding having won his last three starts on the trot in PE. Horses from that region cannot be written off lightly and he make them all gallop. The Lucky Houdalakis-trained Dyce gives lumps of weight to the entire field although his recent form has been below par. However, he has since been gelded and if finding his best form he can give this field weight and a beating.
Winter Cloud is in a similar position to Lucky Lad when she lines up in the Gr1 The Witness SA Fillies Sprint. Candice Bass-Robinson’s filly is no stranger to Hollywoodbets Scottsville having won the Gr3 Strelitzia Stakes before following up second to Mrs Geriatrix in the Gr1 Allan Robertson last season. She comes off two comfortable victories in the Cape and if she has travelled well she could be the horse to beat in what otherwise looks to be an open affair. Tarry saddles Mrs Browning who had all of Time For Orchids, White Pearl and One Fell Swoop behind her when winning the Gr2 TAB Camellia Stakes at her last start and meets them on the same weight terms. Richard Fourie retains the ride. October Morn beat Asiye Phambili in the Gr2 Cartier Sceptre Stakes this summer and has finished runner-up in two subsequent feature race outings giving Bass-Robinson a smart second string to her bow. Asiye Phambili won well over course and distance in the Gr3 Dennis Drier Poinsettia Stakes when back with Duncan Howells after a spell in the Cape. She is effective over a mile and given that this race will be run at a cracking gallop it should suit.
The Gr1 Gold Medallion sees many runners in with strong winning chances. One More has only had one outing for Lucky Houdalakis and winning well on debut. Multiple winners have come out of the form line to back up his claim and he could be the one to beat. Peter Muscutt is having a good season and saddles recent winner Cold Shine who should start at competitive odds. The gelding made his debut in feature company in the Cape, finishing second to Roman Agent with current sensation One Stripe well beaten. He ran well below par next time out before returning to KZN. He won rather comfortably on his return and although it was not the strongest field he was finishing off his race well and an extra furlong and a look at the course will count in his favour. Cymric is held in high regard by Johan Janse van Vuuren and he won well when sent out favourite for the Gr3 Godolphin Barb Stakes on this course. Van Vuuren admitted that he had been reluctant to geld his charge but eventually listened to the advice from his jockeys and Cymric is unbeaten since the operation. Truth has been a runaway winner of both his starts for Candice Dawson, winning by seven lengths last time out. That was over the Turffontein 1400m so he will be well suited to this course and is another with winning credentials.
Gimmie’s Countess is the full sister to last year’s Golden Horse winner Gimme A Prince and will have many supporters when Dean Kannemeyer’s charge lines up in the Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship. On debut, Gimmie’s Countess was a runaway maiden winner on the Hollywoodbets Greyville poly beating subsequent easy winner Spirit Of Levana. She is a superb specimen and appears to have the ability to match, but she does take on some more exposed opposition. Just Reckless finished runner-up to Little Ballerina in the Gr2 SA Fillies Nursery and the form behind Little Ballerina has proved almost infallible as Just Reckless followed up by winning the Gr3 Strelitzia Stakes. Mike Miller is having a good run of late and victory here would not be out of turn. Symphony In White took on males when seven lengths behind the highly promising One Stripe before winning well over the Hollywoodbets Kenilworth five furlongs in a manner that should suit this track. Kindred Heart also comes off some Little Ballerina form, beaten less than a length at The Vaal and Piere Strydom retains the ride.

10 WILLOWILD 11 CAT O’CLOCK 12 LITTLEBLACKGEM 2 ONE SMART COOKIE
Summary: Plenty in with chances here and the betting may prove to be your best guide. WILLOWILD (10) comes from a visiting yard with a good record with Juveniles and could be up to it. She has found betting support in both starts. CAT O’CLOCK (11) returns from a lengthy break after making a fair debut. She is one to watch in the market. Michael Roberts sends out two with big chances, possibly LITTLEBLACKGEM (12) the pick but LIZWILE ILALI (3) with Richard Fourie up should be a factor. ONE SMART COOKIE (2) has been rested but never far back. (Andre Harrison: 10-11-12-2).
RACE 2
5 FAMOUS WARRIOR 7 BURNING MAN 1 RICH FOLKS HOAX 4 FRENCH FLAME
Summary: Wide open. FAMOUS WARRIOR (5) has come on with each run and looks primed for this. BURNING MAN (7) was disappointing when ridden by an apprentice in his local debut. This trip with Richard Fourie up should see some improvement. RICH FOLKS HOAX (1) was all at sea when making his debut and one must take that into account as he goes the turn for the first time but he could prove the pick of Dean Kannemeyer’s pair with FRENCH FLAME (4) also in the picture. (Andrew Harrison: 5-7-1-4).
RACE 3
4 BUZZ BOMB 7 WILLOW EXPRESS 10 IRON WILL 9 PASCALI
Summary: BUZZ BOMB (4) made a winning local debut and has made steady improvement. He comes out of the Little Ballerina form line and takes on some well exposed older runners, one of which is WILLOW EXPRESS (7) who has his 54th outing but has been a model of consistency of late. He should be thereabouts again. IRON WILL (10) comes from a very much in-form stable. His last two wins have come over course and distance and his recent showings have been consistent. PASCALI (9) has been trying further but could be back to a more suitable trip. (Andrew Harrison: 4-7-10-9).
RACE 4
3 CONTINENTALEXPRESS 1 POORLITTLERICHGIRL 9 VIHAAN’S BOMB 11 EVERY CLOUD
Summary: Another wide open handicap. CONTINENTALEXPRESS (3) made good progress in his second local outing. The blinkers come off but he looks progressive. POORLITTLERICHGIRL (1) had a rough draw in the East Coast Cup but was not far back. She meets slightly weaker here. Richard Fourie has stuck with VIHAAN’S BOMB (9) who has come well in blinkers and stays the trip. He can follow up. EVERY CLOUD (11) is overdue another win. He was beaten just over a length by Vihaan’s Bomb when last they met and is now 2kg better off in the handicap. He stays the trip well. (Andrew Harrison: 3-1-9-11).
RACE 5
3 GIMME’S COUNTESS 6 JUST RECKLESS 8 SYMPHONY IN WHITE 7 KINDRED HEART
Summary: GIMMIE’S COUNTESS (3) was a runaway maiden winner on the Hollywoodbets Greyville poly beating subsequent easy winner Spirit Of Levana. She is a superb specimen and appears to have the ability to match. But she does take on some more exposed opposition. JUST RECKLESS (6) finished runner-up to Little Ballerina in the Gr2 SA Fillies Nursery and the form behind Little Ballerina has proved almost infallible as Just Reckless followed up winning the Gr3 Strelitzia Stakes. SYMPHONY IN WHITE (8) took on males when seven lengths behind the highly promising One Stripe before winning well over the Hollywoodbets Kenilworth five furlongs in a manner that should suit this track. KINDRED HEART (7) also comes off some Little Ballerina form, beaten less than a length at The Vaal. Piere Strydom retains the ride. (Andrew Harrison: 3-6-8-7).
RACE 6
9 ONE MORE 8 COLD SHINE 5 CYMRIC 7 TRUTH
Summary: Many runners in with winning credentials. ONE MORE (9) has only had one start for Lucky Houdalakis and winning well on debut. Multiple winners have come out of the form line and he could be the one to beat. Peter Muscutt is having a good season and saddles recent winner COLD SHINE (8). He made his debut in feature company in the Cape, finishing second to Roman Agent with current sensation One Stripe well beaten. He ran well below par next time out before returning to KZN and winning rather comfortably. It was not the strongest field but he was finishing off his race well and an extra furlong and a look at the course will count in his favour. CYMRIC (5) is held in high regard by Johan Janse van Vuuren and he won well when sent out favourite for the Godolphin Barb Stakes. He is unbeaten since being gelded. TRUTH (7) has been a runaway winner of both his starts, winning by seven lengths last time out. That was over the Turffontein 1400m so he will be well suited to this course. (Andrew Harrison: 9-8-5-7).
RACE 7
15 WINTER CLOUD 5 MRS BROWNING 4 OCTOBER MORN 13 ASIYE PHAMBILI
Summary: Candice Bass-Robinson’s filly WINTER CLOUD (15) is no stranger to Hollywoodbets Scottsville having won the Gr3 Strelitzia Stakes before following up second to Mrs Geriatrix in the Gr1 Allan Robertson last season. She comes off two comfortable victories in the Cape and if she has travelled well she could be the horse to beat in what otherwise looks an open affair. MRS BROWNING (5) had all of TIME FOR ORCHIDS (10), WHITE PEARL (6) AND ONE FELL SWOOP (11) behind her when winning the Gr2 TAB Camellia Stakes at her last start and meets them on the same weight terms. Richard Fourie retains the ride. OCTOBER MORN (4) beat Asiye Phambili in the Gr2 Cartier Sceptre Stakes and has finished runner-up in two subsequent feature race outings giving Bass-Robinson a smart second string to her bow. ASIYE PHAMBILI (13) won well over course and distance in the Gr3 Dennis Drier Poinsettia Stakes when back with Duncan Howells after a spell in the Cape. She is effective over a mile and given that this race will be run at a cracking gallop it should suit. (Andrew Harrison: 15-5-4-13).
RACE 8
11 LUCKY LAD 3 SURJAY 10 CRUISE CONTROL 7 DYCE
Summary: LUCKY LAD (11) was a facile winner of the Gr1 Gold Medallion at the same time last year and although losing his way a little after that victory, Sean Tarry appears to have got him back to best and with a handy galloping weight he should put in a bold effort. SURJAY (3) was beaten under a length by Lucky Lad in the Gr2 Jehan Malherbe Senor Santa Stakes and meets his rival on 2kg better terms which in theory puts Brett Crawford’s runner ahead of Lucky Lad. However, Lucky Lad can make the required improvement. Duncan Howells saddles CRUISE CONTROL (10) for the first time, the gelding having won his last three starts on the trot in PE. Horses from that region cannot be written off lightly and he make them all gallop. DYCE (7) has to give lumps of weight to the entire field and his recent form has been below par. However, he has since been gelded and if finding his best form he can give this field weight and a beating. (Andrew Harrison: 11-3-10-11).
RACE 9
1 WONDERFUL 14 MASCHERINA 10 MOUNTAINSOFTHEMOON 11 PETIT VERDOT
Summary: WONDERFUL (1) steps up in trip over which she has been comfortable and has the best of the draw. She should make a bold bid. MASCHERINA (14) has the widest draw to contend with but has started favourite at her last four outings. She won well last time out and must have a strong chance again. MOUNTIANSOFTHEMOON (10) raced in feature company last start and was only two lengths off the winner Saartjie. She has been coming along the right way and should be cherry-ripe. PETIT VERDOT (11) has been knocking at the door for some time now. She has a handy galloping weight and should be in the shake-up. (Andrew Harrison: 1-14-10-11).

The 2024 Hollywoodbets Durban July wave is building for the traditional vibrant, spectacular celebration of fashion and action at the continent’s premier horseracing event on Saturday, July 6.
While the trainers, owners and jockeys are plotting and planning to ensure the top horses are in peak condition for the R5 million, 2 200m test of equine excellence, the country’s top designers are making sure their creations reflect this year’s theme and wow the audience at South Africa’s premier annual showpiece of style.
On the track, Champions Season is well under way with the first meetings of “July Season” giving clues as to who will be the horses to watch at the Hollywoodbets Durban July, when the top-class field fight for the most prestigious title in South African racing.
The “Ride the Wave” theme was launched in late March and immediately provided fashion houses, designers, young creatives and the hospitality service providers with an opportunity to let their imagination run wild and explore the infinite possibilities flowing from the concept.
As always, the release of the theme started an immediate buzz in the fashion design community and the fashion programme, that is an integral element of Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event, sprang into life.
The six stellar South African designers who will headline the fashion element at the Hollywoodbets Durban July Invited Designer Showcase presented by Durban Fashion Fair have been announced and have already produced some wonderful creations.
As the professionals are looking seaward for inspiration, the future stars are also preparing for the chance to make a name for themselves inside and outside the industry in the Hollywoodbets Durban July Young Designer Award presented by Durban Fashion Fair. After a gruelling judging programme, the top 10 students from fashion design colleges and technikons across KwaZulu-Natal will be shortlisted. These elite young creators will be given the opportunity of a lifetime when they get to showcase their “Ride the Wave” designs alongside the Durban Fashion Fair Rising Stars and the invited designers.
This will take place at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping at the Hollywoodbets Durban July Fashion Experience Preview Gala. The Top 10 Young Designers will then get to display their creations on raceday for the more than 50 000 adoring fans at the 2024 Hollywoodbets Durban July.
The vibrant pre-race day fashion shows provide ample opportunity for the industry leaders to show off their ideas, allowing for the fashionistas and socialites to be inspired to build their own creations – ensuring that when the big day comes around, Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse will be a vibrant wave of colour and creativity.
Gold Circle confirmed earlier this month that racecourse entrance tickets at R230 are available through Ticketpro’s website (www.ticketpros.co.za) or select SPAR Payzone Kiosks nationwide. Tickets will also be sold from June 24 at the sales kiosk in Avondale Road at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on weekdays and race days in the weeks leading up to race day. Entrance tickets will be on sale on race day, but it is best to get your tickets before race day to avoid the queues at the entrances. On-site parking is also on offer at R170 per vehicle.
With the pandemic restrictions now a fading memory, the excitement and fervour of the racegoers grew in 2022 and 2023, and the hospitality suites are once again proving as popular as ever and look set to grow even more in 2024. The various marquee and suite hospitality areas in the infield Marquee Village and in the Grandstand provide plenty of entertainment for the socialites, and are perfect venues to socialize while taking in the on-course action.
Early indications are that this year’s event will continue the growth seen over the past couple of years and the variety and range of hospitality packages, at varying prices, are available for what once again promises to be arguably the country’s most memorable social and horseracing event.
Don’t miss the wave as it builds to a crescendo of colour, action and entertainment on July 6.
