Race 1
LENOXX (9) found a mountain of trouble when making a forward move last time out. Barring a first time springer, he could be difficult to beat. ENJOY THE RIDE (13) made a promising debut at long odds and should show natural improvement. SNOW WARRIOR (1) was rested after a modest debut but did find market support. MFULATHELA (12) was a distant third last run but gets first time blinkers and can do better. (Andrew Harrison: 9-13-1-12).
Race 2
WAR EMPEROR (9) has been knocking at the door and comes from an in form stable. The step up in trip should suit. THE NAME OF DLADLA (3) has finished runner-up at his last three on the Highveld and stays the trip. He gets first time blinkers and can go one better. DOG SOLDIER (6) has made steady improvement and was running on well from a wide draw last time out. The step up in trip should suit. SOUND OF FREEDOM (4) has been making steady improvement and another stepping up in trip. The betting could prove a good guide in this line-up. (Andrew Harrison: 9-3-6-4).
Race 3
Competitive handicap. SIERRA SAGRANDA (8) had some useful form in good maiden company before running out and easy maiden winner. He was all at sea first up on the poly and can do better here and turn the tables on NEXT OF KIN (5) who has found one better at his last three outings and has gone close over course and distance. SERPENTINE FIRE (2) may have found his last two too far. Back over a shorter trip from a good draw should see him competitive. MASTER BOMBER (10) has come well of late. He has gone up in the handicap but goes well on this course. (Andrew Harrison: 8-5-2-10).
Race 4
JP’S PALACE (8) has yet to finish out of the money since being fitted with cheek pieces. He has gone close to stronger and should feature. GUY GIBSON (1) has consistent Fairview form and has done well on this course. He has the best of the draw. MOHAVE PRINCE (3) has come good in blinkers. He is down in class and has Andrew Fortune aboard. (Andrew Harrison: 8-3-1).
Race 5
QUERAI DANCER (1) was an impressive winner of the Gr3 Strelitzia Stakes on this course and comes with smart Cape form. She should run another big race. FLOWER ISLAND (5) has been a comfortable winner of both starts. She comes from a strong stable and has a favourable draw. PALACE OF ARVERNIA (15) was most impressive on debut and can follow up in stronger company. VENTURA BOULEVARD (10) made short work of her opposition in her Fairview debut and could be anything. (Andrew Harrison: 1-5-15-10).
Race 6
RICH MAN’S WORLD (6) has been ultra impressive in three starts and made short work of the highly rated Master Magician on this course last time out. It will take a good one to beat him. However, HAUTE COUTURE (8) trotted up by ten lengths on debut and any market support must be respected while EGREMONT (9) found solid market support at long odds on debut and landed the gamble. SA Nursery winner BETTER NEVER ENDS (3) beat a four horse field in that race but the form has worked out and he can feature. (Andrew Harrison: 6-8-9-3).
Race 7
Competitive race but Sean Tarry could hold the key. COSMIC SPEED (7) is coming back to himself and was a close-up third behind stable companion JERSULEMEMA RAIN (14) last time out. He is 0.5kg better off with the winner and the extra 100m will be in his favour. Last year’s winner TENANGO (4) has not won in five subsequent starts and has patchy form. But on his day he will be competitive. O’TENIKWA (2) was second to Tenango last year and has been consistent since. He is well suited to this trip. (Andrew Harrison: 7-14-4-2).
Race 8
ASIYE PHAMBILI (8) has twice been unlucky in this race and is in fine fettle to put the record straight after a comfortable win over course and distance last time out. However, she faces champion mare DOUBLE GRAND SLAM (10) wo was unlucky not to have finished closer last year after finding traffic. These two look the principal runners. Last year’s winner MIA MOO (1) comes from a prolific winning stable and she has come well at the right time. PRINCESS OF GAUL (13) is back over what looks to be a more suitable trip and should feature prominently. (Andrew Harrison: 8-10-1-13).
Race 9
Competitive handicap. GREEN GATEWAY (5) is lightly raced but has some good form in useful company. He gets first time blinkers over what looks to be his best trip. COGNAC (11) needed his last run after a disappointing visit to the Cape. If back to best he should go close. KAALVOET (15) has been much improved since being fitted with alumites. He won the In Full Flight Handicap at long odds last start and can follow up. CITY OF LOVE (14) is down in class and has useful form over course and distance. With some relief from the saddle he should be competitive. (Andrew Harrison: 5-11-15-14).

Asiye Phambili looking for a ‘grand slam’

Hollywoodbets Scottsville today hosts one of the finest day’s racing of any season hosting four of the country’s defining sprints all over the testing 1200m course but there is a weather warning for some afternoon rain.
Labelled the Festival of Speed where once all four races were accorded Gr1 status but two of those, namely the Allan Robertson Championship and the Golden Horse Sprint, have been down-graded to Gr2 but this does not detract from the occasion.
The Gr1 SA Fillies Sprint brought to you by The Witness is possibly the highlight of the card where the two star mares, Double Grand Slam and Asiye Phambili, are likely to top the boards but will be challenged by some top class opposition.
Both mares will be out to set the record straight as both have been unlucky in this race. Justin Snaith’s champion Double Grand Slam ran into a wall of traffic last year and had to be content with sixth place, beaten just over a length behind Mia Moo and Asiye Phambili who were separated by a nose at the line.
Drawn in gate one last year may have been Double Grand Slam’s downfall as the field shifted to the inside rail where getting a run was luck of the draw. She has gate 10 today and Andrew Fortune back in the irons.
Asiye Phambili was unlucky at her first attempt in the race with Rachel Venniker being dislodged at the start. Last year, Sean Veale appeared to misjudge his finish and Asiye Phambili was a winner one-jump across the line.
Double Grand Slam drops back to a sprint after winning two Gr1 races over 1600m at her last two starts while Asiye Phambili was a facile winner over course and distance last time out and that may just give the Duncan Howells-trained mare the edge.
Sean Tarry has an exceptional record at Scottsville, having saddled 21 Gr1 winners at the track and that includes last year’s winner Mia Moo who looks to have had the perfect preparation finishing third in the Gr1 Computaform Sprint against males. These three look the principal contenders in what should be a cracking contest.
The Gr1 Gold Medallion field has cut up to just nine runners and Vaughan Marshall’s colt Rich Man’s World will be many punter’s exotic bet banker. Unbeaten in three outings, each by an extended margin, he was majestic in putting the highly rated Master Magician to bed in a matter of strides in the Gr3 Godolphin Barb over 1100m on this course and he is the horse to beat.
Adding flavour to the race, he does come up against two unbeaten colts in Haute Couture, a 10-length winner at Turffontein on debut for Mike and Mathew de Kock and the Tarry-trained Egremont who found long-shot betting support on debut and duly arrived over 1200m at the Vaal. They could be anything.
The Gr2 Golden Horse Sprint is a competitive handicap and the list of possible winners is a long one. However, visiting French rider Mickaelle Michel will be hunting her third Gr2 success on her busman’s holiday and she has every chance on the Tarry-trained Jerusalema Rain. The gelding is in cracking form and upset top sprinter Buffalo Storm Cody last time out after finishing a close-up second to Questioning at his previous start. Also in his favour is that he only shoulders 53.5kg.
Tarry has a second string to his bow in Cosmic Speed who was well supported in the market and the stable elect when a neck behind Jerusalema Rain. He is 0.5kg better off this time around and the extra 100m will count in his favour.
Last year’s winner, Tenango has been winless in five subsequent outings but the Candice Bass stable is in form and experience over the course can often prove decisive.
Taxi To The Moon won well for Tony Peter at Hollywoodbets Greyville last time out beating the lightly weighted filly Hierarchy. However, his best recent form has been over 1000m and the testing Hollywoodbets Scottsville 1200m could find him out.
The Allan Robertson is another tricky race but Justin Snaith has made a cracking start to his Champions Season raid and made it clear that he has brought a strong team up from the Cape. Querari Dancer is one and she made a winning KZN debut in the Strelitzia Stakes over the course. Although only winning by a neck, Andrew Fortune gave another one of his nerveless displays, weaving in and out of trouble and hardly moving on the filly who had come off two smart runs against males in the Cape. She has seen the course and will be among the fancied runners.
Mike and Mathew de Kock saddle Flower Island, unbeaten in two starts and not overly pressed in both outings. She could be the main threat to Querari Dancer.
But again the list of possible winners does not stop there. Tarry’s four runners can never be ignored, Louis Gooden sends out Ferrari Flair who was less than a length back to Querari Dancer, Palace Of Arvernia won well first time out for Dean Kannemeyer and Alan Greeff makes his way up from the Eastern Cape with Ventura Boulevard, a ten-length winner on debut and you ignore horses from that region at your peril.
