Darryl Moore’s gelding JP’s Palace was in contention until the last furlong when taking on the likes of Okavango and King Pelles in the recent Kings Cup (Listed) at Hollywoodbets Scottsville and he has another handy galloping weight come the World Sports Betting Sledgehammer over 1750m at the same venue today.

The  opposition is slightly weaker so one can expect another forward showing.

Peter Muscutt saddles I Salute You who has his first run back after a stint in the Western Cape where he paid his way by winning the Gr3 Peninsular Handicap. However, he has to give JP’s Palace 9.5kg which could prove beyond him. Muzi Yeni has deserted Bruh for I Salute You but Paul Lafferty’s gelding has not been out of the money at recent outings and with a light weight and first time blinkers he could be the surprise package. Field Marshal was running on late behind Okavango and JP’s Palace in the Kings Cup and it was his first run back from a break and his first for Nathan Kotzen. He can progress from that showing and should put in a solid effort.

In the fillies and mares version, the WSB Scarlet Lady, Ice Rain shoulders top weight but Andre Nel’s mare still looks to be relatively well in at the handicap. She was narrowly beaten by Rahhabba last time out and now meets her rival on 1.5kg better terms so should be capable of turning the tables. A bigger threat could be Ladyofdistintion who finished three lengths adrift of the above mentioned pair when last the trio met. However, that was in soft ground and with firmer going she can make amends given that she started favourite for that race. Nel has a second string to his bow in Miss Twinkle who finished third in the race won by Rahhabba and is also 1.5kg better off in the handicap but stable rider Serino Moodley has opted to partner the top weight which could tell a story.

With the demise of Clairwood, Hollywoodbets Scottsville provides the only straight sprint course on the turf in KZN and trainers invariably elect to give their young horses the chance to find themselves without going around a turn.

Both of the first two races on the card have attracted big fields with many debutantes so the betting should prove your best guide. Of those that have run in the first, De Gulden has had one promising outing in the Cape finishing third and given the Dean Kannemeyer stable strength, she may be the one to beat. Iceberg Rose is drawn on the opposite side of the track but caught the eye on debut and should improve. Sei Bella made good improvement second time out and can feature and the same goes for Liz Hurley who was not too far back on debut and should benefit from the experience.

In the second, of those that have run, the filly Predator’s Crown was a close-up second on debut and that form has worked out quite well. However, Bison Warrior improved second time out and was only run out of it late. He drops back in trip which could suit. Tommy Greaney raced green in a promising debut and is sure to make good improvement and is one to watch closely in the market being Dom Zaki’s only runner on the day.

In the first leg of the Place Accumulator Lilting Song has finished runner-up in her first two KZN starts and should be in the money again. She was beaten by a promising sort last run and this drop in trip could see her home. Alec Laird visits from the Highveld and Lolly Willowes comes with some useful form. She was narrowly beaten in a work riders race last start but gets Craig Zackey this time around. Chooks Kiss has the widest draw but has been making steady improvement and can feature along with struggling maiden Tipperary who is seldom far back. She is over what may be a more suitable trip and has the benefit of the inside gate.

Quarter Master can open the Pick 6 in spite of having drawn the widest gate. Robbie Hill’s runner has shown promise in his three starts to date and the step up in trip should suit. Good Omen has been costly to follow but has been close-up in all of his recent starts. He has gone close when tried over this trip and is overdue. The filly Taylor’s Version started favourite last time out but ran no sort of race. The blinkers are back on and given her previous form she should be competitive in this field. God’s Country sees a rare visit from Highveld trainer Brett Webber. The gelding made sudden improvement last run and may be worth following in the market although Webber’s best chance of a winner could come in the fifth with Royal Invitation.

In this contest over 2400m, Continentalexpress  has excellent form over course and distance and should go close to winning again. However, he meets Chill In The Air on 3kg worse terms with Michael Roberts’s charge starting favourite on the day they met. Royal Invitation raced in feature company last start and was not too far back. He stays this trip well and rates a strong chance. Plum Pudding steps up in trip and is in very good form and the same goes for French Trip who beat Continentalexpress when last they met but that was over a much shorter trip. Son Of Raj is off form but is the class in the race and has his first run for Frank Robertson.

The eighth is a tricky handicap but Arverni Princess took on much stronger at her last two. She has smart form over the trip and must have a decent chance in this line-up. Jane’s Vision was a winner over course and distance last time out and only got a two-point increase in the handicap. She can follow up. Cappellino is 1.5kg better off with Jane’s Vision but was two lengths back when last they met and that may not be enough to turn the tables. The grey Professor Lupin is always game but his best form appears to be on the poly.

Finally one of the better bets on the card could come in the last where Muscutt saddles City Of Love who takes a big drop in class and goes well over course and distance. Who Blinked could be a threat and will have his supporters but in the wings is Muscutt’s stable companion Military Command who has lost his way of late but is capable of much better and could be the surprise package.

Summary: Mostly first timers so the betting should prove your best guide. CAPPELLINO  (3)  is 1.5kg better off with Jane’s Vision but was two lengths back when last they met and that may not be enough to turn the tables. The ever consistent TRAFALGAR SQUARE (9) shoulders a hefty 63kg but is a distance specialist and should run another game race. PROFESSOR LUPIN (4) is always game but his best form appears to be on the poly. (Andrew Harrison: 2-6-3-9).

Summary: CITY OF LOVE (6) takes a big drop in class. He goes well over course and distance and should have a strong chance. WHO BLINKED (12) has come to hand over course and distance and will be a big threat if holding form. MILITARY COMMAND (5) has lost his way of late but is capable of much better and could be the surprise package. GORGEOUS GUY (2) is seldom too far off them and has a money chance at best. A promising career once headed for the annals of what could have been, has enjoyed a resurrection. See It Again, prematurely consigned to the dustbin of history after repeated refusals to enter the starting stalls, is on track for another crack at the Gr1 Hollywoodbets Durban July, a race that has eluded him in spite of his obvious talent.

Since his relocation to the Western Cape where renown horse behaviorist Malan de Toit and trainer Justin Snaith have got the gelding to refocus and bring out his ability, their efforts were rewarded with victory in the Gr1 WSB Cape Town Met.

With his starting stall issues seemingly behind him, See It Again made the trip up to what was home ground in KZN before raiding Turffontein where he finished a good second in the Gr1 HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes over 1600m behind smart three-year-old Tin Pan Alley who saw his rating jump from 117 to 128 after the race much to the chagrin of Sean Tarry.

That said, See It Again faces another test on his journey into Champions Season in KZN when he lines up in the Gr1 HKJC Premier’s Champion Stakes over the testing Turffontein track on Saturday.

The Turffontein 2000m is not unfamiliar territory, See It Again finishing two lengths off winner Atticus Finch in last season’s Gr1 Betway Summer Cup giving the winner 6kg.

Saturday’s race is WFA which suggests that all being equal, Atticus Finch has it all to do at level weights.

Andrew Fortune rode a masterful race on See It Again to win the Met and he would dearly have loved to be aboard on Saturday but for a heavy fall at Fairview that saw him sidelined with broken ribs and collar bone. Speaking at Summerveld last Saturday he said things were on track for a return to the saddle in three weeks’ time.

Fortune has been replaced by Craig Zackey, an interesting call as Richard Fourie partnered See It Again in the Horse Chestnut and is now booked for stable companion Okavango while Zackey may well have had the choice of Grand Empire and Madison Valley. Okavango was game in a front-running display in the Listed Kings Cup when holding off the more than useful King Pelles at Hollywoodbets Scottsville and as both See It Again and Okavango are owned by Nic Jonsson, Okavango may be the sacrificial lamb with Fourie a master judge of pace.

Grand Empire and Trust fought a desperate duel in the Gr1 HKJC SA Classic, a nose separating the pair. Both go this trip for the first time but current crop of three-year-olds have yet to be solidly tested against top older horses and this race should give some indication of the depth. Both go this trip for the first time and both Tarry and Candice and Tammy Dawson have a knack for preparing their changes for the big days so it will be interesting.

In all, if See It Again puts in his best, he should be difficult to beat with the three-year-olds his most likely challengers.

It is a big day at Turffontein as their summer season draws to a close with a host of feature races on the 12-race card.

Main supporting feature is the Gr1 TAB Computaform Sprint that has attracted a big field of 17 runners where luck in running could play a pivotal role. The two most obvious contenders are Buffalo Storm Cody and last year’s winner, the ever game William Robertson, but they will be challenged by Fairview raider Kingdundee who comes off a four-race winning sequence and victory in the Gr1 Cape Flying Championship where he made a mockery of his 33-1 odds with favourite for the race Buffalo Storm Cody, well beaten, just over two lengths back.

Tony Peter’s charge has since made amends back on the Highveld where he got the better of William Robertson in a Pinnacle Stakes, the two meeting at level weights. Fourie replaces regular rider Gavin Lerena who will partner Clinton Binda’s gelding Ziyasha who goes into the contest of a recent victory. He is a horse who has had his ups-and-downs and although he looks safely held at the weights he could ride to the occasion. Lerena took a crashing fall at The Vaal midweek so his participation is uncertain at time of writing.

Buffalo Storm Cody is super quick and the Flying Championship was the only blemish in a five-race winning streak and goes for his 10^th success in 17 outings.

William Robertson on the other hand was won 17 races from 56 starts and Corne Spies is not shy to saddle up. He has had two further outings since finishing second to Buffalo Storm Cody, winning and then finishing two lengths off Ziyasha in a Pinnacle Stakes, giving the winner 4kg.

Last season’s Computaform victory was a deserved maiden Grade 1 success for William Robertson and if anything, he will strip fit.

Kingdundee is a 1000m specialist and runners from the Eastern Cape can never be ignored. Dean Smith’s runner comes with more than creditable form given his Flying Championship win and although Buffalo Storm Cody may have run below par on the day, form is form.

The SA Derby will be run as a Gr2 for the first time and has attracted a bigger than usual field. It is a highly competitive contest where Mike and Mathew de Kock’s filly Curious Girl will be out to become the first filly in over 100 years to put one over the colts. In her favour is that she has won over the distance and cruised home in the Oaks Trial. Lerena is penciled in to ride. Of the males, Texas Missile strikes as a progressive stayer and comes from the right stable as Alec Laird is a master of staying horses.

Spies has his hopes pinned on William Robertson for the Computaform and Hazy Dazy in the Wilgerbosdrift Bridget Oppenheimer SA Oaks. The daughter of Act Of War has the trophies for the first two legs of the Triple Tiara in the cabinet and the Oaks will see her follow in the footsteps of some of South Africa’s champion fillies. Spies has stayed loyal to apprentice Trent Mayhew who rode an exception front-running race in the SA Fillies Classic to hold off the smart Golden Palm. On that showing the extended trip should hold no fears.
