Warren Lenferna

The first event on the card at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth yesterday was a Work Riders Maiden Plate over 1100m, and it provided a thrilling finish between Red Wave and Volegov. Volegov, for Vusumsi Bikwe and Andre Nel, edged out Red Wave, with Louis Burke aboard for Justin Snaith, in the shadow of the post.

The second race was thrilling to watch—not for a tight finish, but for an impressive performance from Margate, the gorgeous daughter of What A Winter out of Amanzimtoti. Both sire and mare were trained by the Bass team. Margate caught the eye on debut five weeks ago and went off as the red-hot favourite. As Race Coast race caller Brandon Bailey said, “She hasn’t come out of first gear—this is only the beginning!” She was super impressive and is one to follow.

She was ridden perfectly by Aldo Domeyer, who was of the opinion in the post-race interview with Alistair Cohen that she would go further in time. This was music to her trainer Candice Bass’s ears, as she mentioned that she had thought Margate would be an out-and-out sprinter because of the speed she shows.

Race three set off the popular Place Accumulator. It was a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1200m, where nine colts and one lone filly faced the starter. The first four past the post were impressive and should win their fair share of races. Kalahari King (Domeyer and Snaith) was impressive when winning, beating into second place Aquae Calidae (Zackey and Sands), who looks a talented colt. Vibe Check and Tag And Release also caught the eye and could find the winner’s enclosure at their next start.

Rich Man’s World, for Vaughan Marshall and Sean Veale, won the fourth race, making this exciting, handsome and progressive son of One World unbeaten—two from two.

Somebody Somewhere, the daughter of Rafeef for James Crawford and Gareth Wright, was the winner of the main race that followed. This filly had improved at her second run over 1500m but was dropped in trip and clearly relished it. She could go on to win a few. Returning from a 22-week rest, she came back fresh and raring to go.

Blu Lagoon recorded her third second in a row and should win soon, but she is becoming a bit costly to follow.

Blizzardboy got it all right at the tenth time of asking for Lucinda Woodruff and Callan Murray in race six, beating Spanish Verse, who found the runner-up spot again and should win very soon.

There was a tight finish to the seventh race, with Flying Finley—representing red-hot, in-form Keagan De Melo and conditioner Paul Reeves—beating Lyrical Gangster into second place. There was also a dead heat for third between the well-supported Follow Your Heart and the luckless Starting Point, who kicked on powerfully but encountered traffic problems.

Race 1: Preview: VIKING LASS (11) nearly won on debut and with natural progression, should win. STAR MAGNOLIA (10) gets Gavin Lerena after making a fair debut – expect improvement – big place chance. Race 2: Preview: SHERLOCK HOLMES (12) improved a ton at the second time of asking and with more progression likely, can win. CAPTAIN COOPER (3) gets the services of Gavin Lerena on debut which is worth taking note of. Watch the betting trends as race time looms. KUDIKARAN (7) caught the attention on debut and can be given serious each way claims. MFULATHELA (10) can improve to get closer. (Warren Lenferna 12-3-7-10)

Race 3: Preview: COMIC ARTIST (6) meets the right field and she looks set to give the ever improving and in form apprentice rider, Blaine Marx-Jacobson another winner. HEROIC ACT (3) is a long-time trying maiden but has been consistently earning. He should win soon – big runner. THOONSIL (2) and GREENSIDE GIRL (7) must be respected and included in quartet permutations. (Warren Lenferna 6-3-2-7)

Race 4: Preview: FUTURE GAMBLE (1) is making huge threats of winning and today looks to be the day. Possible banker? LANTERI (2) has shown some promise and can finish in the first three. VIXENINTHEVINEYARD (4) is taking time but is running excellent race and placing – huge place chance. COOL REGGAE (5) has a first four chance. (Warren Lenferna 1-2-4-5)

Race 5: Preview: GIMMESUMLUV (9) is lightly raced and has earned three from four starts. Craig Zackey gets the appointment to ride today and she is the firm first choice. POMPEII SHIELD (2) has solid form and would be deserving of the win. It could well be today and he is a must for all bets. ROYALE JACKET (1) has place claims and AFTERBURN (3) could represent some place value. (Warren Lenferna 9-2-1-3)

Race 6: Preview: SIX OF ALL (1) looks to be the right one in this open MR 66 Handicap. His last run obviously caught the attention of Gavin Lerena who rides him today. HAT FURIOUS (8) is never far off the action and can make a race of it – respect and include. INSTANT ATTRACTION (4) has big claims on her penultimate run and must be forgiven for the last run when finishing downfield. ITSNOWORNEVER (6) should be in the shake-up. (Warren Lenfenra 1-9-4-6)

Race 7: Preview: GOT THE FEELING (5) is taking time for the next win but is certainly running well and caught the attention last time when beaten by talented Tintin. He is the first choice. WARNING LIGHT (9) could end up being absolutely anything. His debut win was exceptional and the next run was fair with scope to build on – big chance. RINGA RINGA ROSES (7) has solid for and a solid chance. She was not too far off Got The Feeling in the race won by Tintin. ORANGE COUNTY (11) can earn. (Warren Lenferna 5-9-7-11)

Race 8: Preview: CARE FORGOT (2) has clearly not forgotten how to win. Her last two victories were impressive and she has every chance of make it three-in-a-row. CEUTA (8) went very close to getting it all right last time and can provide plenty cheek all the way home. She cannot be ignored. ROBERT BROWNING (13) and DOUGLAS DRAGON (12) must be included on the shortlist – each way claims. (Warren Lenferna 2-8-13-12)

Race 9: Preview: DUCHESS ZAHRA (6) has been given an opening mark of 76. She was gutsy when victorious last time at only the second time of asking. She could be anything. EL ZANI (1) impressed when winning early and must be respected, followed and included. KOTINOS (18) is taking time for the next win but can place and TIME WILL TELL (16) is never far off and can finish in the shake-up. (Warren Lenferna 6-1-18-16)
