A MR 86 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1800m is the highest rated race at the Turffontein Inside track meeting today and Hazy Dazy, who comes off a hat-trick, could score yet another victory.
The three-year-old Act Of War filly is tall and still a bit gangly and she is green too, so looks to have plenty of scope for improvement and can overcome the five point merit rated raise she was given for her last win. She won that 2000m contest by a length but was being eased at the line and she now has pole position draw under the same 1,5kg claimer, Trent Mayhew. Champion jockey Gavin Lerena is aboard Azaleas For All, who could be the main danger. This Fanie Bronkhorst-trained Captain Of All mare was undone by a wide draw over 2000m on the Standside track last time, but was making good headway late on the outside to finish a 2,75 length fourth. She now has a good draw of two over an equally suitable trip and she is 1,5kg better off with Future Date for a one length beating and there is a reversal in draw fortunes too. Streisand is the topweight and has the ability to be in the shake up here as a big, progressive sort, but she has a tricky draw of seven out of nine. Kissing Machine also has the ability to be involved but also has a wide draw to overcome. Future Date can’t be ignored. Alta Capitana was highly tried as a two-year-old and this filly should progress this season into a competitive middle distance campaigner. She has an 87 merit rating but will appreciate the step up in trip after being well beaten on her reappearance in a strong Graduation Plate over 1450m.
In the first leg of the Pick 6 over 1800m Councillor strikes as a progressive sort. She was doing good work late over 1800m last time and now has Richard Fourie up from a fair draw. Naretoi made a fair Highveld debut and from a good draw should plug on into the money. Gavius Maximus will likely lead from draw six and with Gavin Lerena up he should earn. Kavomolka can earn from pole position over a suitable trip. Heroic Act could earn a cheque too.
In the second leg over 1800m Frangipani has scope for improvement and this hard knocker should go close from a fair draw. Anahita is a full sister to Rascallion and should progress this season. She will appreciate the step up in trip and if getting cover from a wide draw will be a big threat. Blood Of Eden stayed on courageously over 1600m last time and should enjoy this trip, so should earn.
In the sixth race over 1800m Drumnadrochit won well on debut over 1600m and off a reasonable 84 merit rating should go close from a plum draw over a step up in trip which should suit. Matcha Mint is a consistent sort and can improve over this step up in trip. It will be tough from a wide draw, but Muzi Yeni is seldom caught out wide and should make a plan. Nkwenkwezi is in fine form and is improving so might be able to handle a four point raise for her last win and she should enjoy the trip.
In the seventh over 1600m Palace Attack is by Potala Palace and is a half-brother to Fire Attack, so should relish the step up in trip, but he does have a wide draw and a 91 merit rating to contend with, so it won’t be easy. Frere Jacques was not disgraced first time out the maidens and the horse who won that race, Beynac, looks useful. He can improve. His draw of six out of ten is not easy but Craig Zackey is up and he should be given every chance. Coming In Hot was just ahead of Frere Jacques and Ombudsman last time and he now has a good draw so can do well if able to bounce back from below par performance subsequent to that run. Ombudsman should be thereabouts from a fair draw. Unsolved Riddle can do better than last time especially as he now has pole position.
In the eighth over 2000m Hat Furious should go close from a fair draw if able to repeat his last start. Peace Treaty will just need to produce his last run to be a big runner here and he has a plum draw. Pomozelous has a better draw than last time and can bounce back. Red Sparrow can also be involved if bouncing back. Bob Lee Swagger is capable of better than his last two starts.
In the first race over 1450m the one to beat looks to be Babette’s Feast, but Trail Runner must be included because Babette’s Feast has a tough draw. Winter Wedding is also a threat in this race.
In the second race over 2000m Olympian Gold has Richard Fourie up and he could fend off Robert Browning and Follow The Master.

1 TRAIL RUNNER has been rested for 105 days, she ran a good race at the Vaal on the 24th of July when staying on beautifully for second behind Shimmering, she steps up in trip to 1450m on Thursday, and she gets a good draw, if she doesn’t need the run badly, she will go very close to winning. 11 BABETTE’S FEAST has been rested for 98 days, she caught the eye in a big way at the Vaal on the 31st of July, she was doing some good work late behind Mattiazo, unfortunately the wide draw will make it tough for her, but she is improving, and she must have a serious winning chance in this field. 6 WINTER WEDDING has run two nice races in succession, she ran fourth behind Single Combat on the 28th of October, she steps up in trip, and she gets a good draw here, include her into all bets. 4 SAVARA’S PRINCESS could be some decent value in this tricky race, she ran a lovely race in a big field on the 9th of October behind Queen Of Pearls, she was only beaten just over four lengths on that occasion, if she can build on that performance, she will trouble them all in the finish. (Brandon Bailey: 1 – 11 – 6 – 4)
RACE 2
3 PAGE BOY won a super race at the Vaal on the 9th of October, he was just off the speed early, and he quickened up smartly to win a good race over 1800m, he was given three points for that win, this looks to be a nice race for him to be competitive again, watch him closely. 1 EIGER SANCTION was given a great ride to win well on the 14th of October, he travelled well in his race, and he fought them off to win nicely over 2000m, he was given three points for that impressive victory, from a neat draw, he will run a big race. 2 ROBERT BROWNING quickened away from his field to win in style on the 2nd of October, he was given five points for that win at the Vaal, on his best form, he can certainly win again. 7 OLYMPIAN GOLD was unfortunately disqualified on the 4th of October, he is a young horse with lots of ability, top jockey Richard Fourie sticks with this colt, he will love the 2000m trip on Thursday, include him into all bets. (Brandon Bailey: 3 – 1 – 2 – 7)
RACE 3
10 COUNCILLOR only got going very late last time for second behind Ethical at the Vaal on the 14th of October, she is a lovely filly with a great action, she is progressive and she has no weight on her back on Thursday, with some luck in running, she will be tough to beat. 3 GAVIUS MAXIMUS steps up in trip to 1800m, he stayed on well for second behind Onetwobucklemyshoe on the 16th of October, he has certainly improved with every start, include him into all bets. 4 KAVOMOLKA ran a much better race on the Inside Track at Turffontein on the 11th of October, he went to the front and he stayed on nicely for third behind Six Of All, from a good draw, he should be competitive. 1 NARETOI ran third over 1600m on the 30th of October, it was his first run on the Highveld, and he caught the eye late behind Luwak, if this run doesn’t come too soon for him, he will run a big race. (Brandon Bailey: 10 – 3 – 4 – 1)
RACE 4
1 BLOOD OF EDEN made the favourite work hard for victory on the Inside Track at Turffontein on the 4th of October, she stayed on beautifully for second behind Drumnadrochit, the blinkers stay on, she steps up in trip, and she has a good draw, there is no doubt she will go close to winning. 2 FRANGIPANI went very close to winning at the Vaal on the 30th of September, she ran a great race for second behind Hazy Dazy, the form of that race has worked out well, she will love the step up in trip to 1800m, include her into all bets. 8 ANAHITA moved up like a winner on the 26th of October, she got beaten on the line in a close finish by Grace’s Kiss, she steps up in trip to 1800m now, Jockey Muzi Yeni sticks with this filly, if she stays, she will go close to winning. 4 FLYING WORLD disappointed terribly on the 28th of September, she was beaten just under four lengths by Ringa Ringa Roses, the blinkers have been fitted, and that could help her improve. (Brandon Bailey: 1 – 2 – 8 – 4)
RACE 5
4 KISSING MACHINE stayed on well for fourth in the Allez France Stakes on the 11th of October, she is a big mare with a beautiful action, Jockey Calvin Habib knows her well, she will be switched off early, and she will be running on strongly late, include her into all bets, she can definitely win. 6 HAZY DAZY could be absolutely anything, she won extremely well at Turffontein on the 26th of October, even though she has gone up in the ratings, she looks smart and she is progressive, watch her closely here. 3 FUTURE DATE never runs a bad race, she is as honest as they come, on her best form, she will be right there in the finish. 1 STREISAND enjoys the Inside Track at Turffontein, she stayed on well for fourth in a strong race at the Vaal on the 2nd of October, if she can beat the tricky draw here, she will make them work hard for victory. (Brandon Bailey: 4 – 6 – 3 – 1)
RACE 6
3 DRUMNADROCHIT won a terrific race on debut, she was still very green, and she managed to fight hard to win well on the 4th of October, she looks like a smart filly in the making, the step up in trip to 1800m will definitely help her, she can win again. 7 ONETWOBUCKLEMYSHOE quickened up in devastating fashion to win her maiden in style on the 16th of October, the yard thinks highly of this individual, she will be just off the speed early, and she will be running on powerfully late, include her into all bets. 5 MATCHA MINT disappointed last time, she was well supported in the market when running fourth behind Dylan’s Champ on the 11th of October, she is much better than that performance, watch her closely, she can bounce back to her best form here. 9 REJUVENATE won her maiden well on the poly track at Hollywoodbets Greyville on the 7th of October, she is consistent and she will get better with more racing. (Brandon Bailey: 3 – 7 – 5 – 9)
RACE 7
6 PALACE ATTACK looks to be way above average, he was finishing like a train last time for second behind Echo Check on the 18th of September, even though he has a tricky draw to deal with on Thursday, he will be low flying late, the step up in trip to 1600m will help his chances as well. 7 FRERE JACQUES only got going very late on the Inside Track at Turffontein on the 4th of October, he managed to run fourth and was beaten five lengths at the line by Beynac on that occasion, he is a big horse with a big action, if he gets some luck in running, he will be dangerous here. 2 OMBUDSMAN ran a fair race behind Beynac on the 4th of October, he ran fifth and was beaten just under six lengths at the line, from a neat draw, he could be competitive. 5 UNSOLVED RIDDLE never runs a bad race, he is super consistent, he could sneak into the Quartet from a good draw. (Brandon Bailey: 6 – 7 – 2 – 5)
RACE 8
1 CHABAL must have a big winning chance here, he quickened up like a nice horse to win a good race at the Vaal on the 23rd of October, if he settles early, he will go close to winning from a decent draw. 2 PEACE TREATY ran a much better race at the Vaal on the 2nd of October, he absolutely took off late to run a great second behind Robert Browning, if he can build on that performance from a neat draw on Thurday, he will have a serious winning chance. 9 HAT FURIOUS ran third behind Chabal on the 23rd of October, he has been in good form of late, watch him closely, he could certainly trouble them in the finish. 5 ZOOMBOMBER will need to improve quite a bit to win a race like this, but he has dropped even further in the ratings, and he steps up in trip to 2000m, he might be able to sneak into the Quartet at a big price. (Brandon Bailey: 1 – 2 – 9 – 5)

‘Trust’ in Valentino Balducci

The Tawny Syndicate have two lively contenders for classic trophies in their homebreds Valentino Balducci and Trust, with the former winning the Gr 3 TAB Starling Stakes on Saturday and the latter running a somewhat unlucky second in the Gr 3 Betway Graham Beck Stakes.
Valentino Balducci was bred by Tawny Syndicate co-founder “JJ” van der Linden and is part-owned by him together with another Tawny Syndicate co-founder Larry Nestadt and also with Tawny Syndicate member Martin Lieveaux.
Trust was bred by Larry Nestadt under the Tawny Syndicate banner and he part-owns him together with Gary Player and Ralphs Racing.
The Valentino Balducci story started when Tawny Syndicate bought the Bosworth Farm Stud-bred Byword filly for R105,000 at the National Two-year-old Sale in 2016.
Goede Hoop was owned by “JJ” and Larry together with SM Nathan and CL Clucas.
Trained by Robbie Sage, Goede Hoop, who was out of Fort Wood maiden Nautical, won four races from 1800m up to 2400m.
Goede Hoop was sent back to Bosworth Farms Stud and covered by their underrated resident stallion Skit Skizzle, who is by the legendary Jet Master.
The first foal was Gideon’s Daughter, who is owned by Fellsmere Pty Ltd (Nom: Ms N Zwane) and trained by Alan Greeff. She won four times in the East Cape before fetching R10,000 at an August Online Sale this year, purchased by Leon Lotter.
Robbie Sage trains the second foal, Valentina Balducci, who is also by Skit Skizzle.
She won her first two starts over 1160m and 1450m before finishing an 8,95 length sixth in the Gr 2 Betway Jo’Burg Fillies and Mares Spring Challenge over 1450m. However, she jumped from a wide draw that day and had too much to do in the straight after being dropped out.
On Saturday in the Gr 3 TAB Starling Stakes over 1400m on Turffontein Standside she had another tough draw of eight out of ten and started at 14/1 odds.
The difference was this time Kaidan Brewer, who has ridden her in all four of her starts, decided to take her to the front.
She enjoyed herself in front and set a fair clip and then kicked well at the top of the straight.
Ovation Star came to challenge her and there was a prolonged tussle between the pair.
Brewer managed to change whip hands in the final stages and after giving her a smack with the left hand she found extra and won by a length.
The Gr 3 Fillies Mile on Betway Summer Cup day looks the obvious target for the filly, who has now accumulated R270,156 with her three wins in four starts and she has already got valuable bold black type.
Trust is by Heavenly Blue and is out of the Frankel may Frankly.
He is a full brother to his useful Candice Dawson-trained stablemate Truth.
Trust won by a length on debut over 1200m on the Turffontein Inside track and the form worked out well as the promising pair Monkey Puzzle and One Eye On Vegas have both come out and won since.
On Saturday, Trust, who was drawn eleven out of 15 in the Gr 3 Graham Beck over 1400m, was taken out early by the favourite Tin Pan Alley, who jumped inwards.
The stipendiary steward report stated, “Shortly after the start, MIAMI MOUNTAIN (C Murray) and TRUST (S Moodley) were bumped in by TIN PAN ALLEY (G Lerena), which jumped inwards leaving the stalls. As a consequence of this, MIAMI MOUNTAIN (C Murray) became momentarily unbalanced.”
This forced Serino Moodley to drop Trust to the back, although he then found the rail and made up a few places.
Trust had to negotiate quite a lot of traffic in the straight coming from near the back, but when seeing daylight at the 250m mark he lengthened his stride impressively and began making inroads in to Tin Pan Alley’s lead.
He was catching Tin Pan Alley fast, but it was too late and he had to settle for a 0,60 length second, a fine run in just his second career start.
The Betway Dingaans over 1600m looks the obvious target for Trust.
His sire Heavenly Blue won the Gr 1 SA Classic over 1800m, but Trust’s full brother Truth has turned out to be a sprinter.
However, Trust does look a different type to Truth with not as much speed and he gave the impression on Saturday that he would see out the mile. He is an exciting classic prospect at present.
The Tawny Syndicate have a lot to look forward to with these two horses, while the 119-rated Truth, whose ownership partners are the same as Trust’s, won a 1000m Pinnacle Stakes event in fine fashion last time out and looks set to have a good sprint campaign.
