Can See It Again finally get an eighth win under his belt? He lines up in a Conditions Plate over 1400m that heads the turf card at Hollywoodbets Greyville today.
It is a race that has attracted many Gr1 Betway Summer Cup contenders over a distance well short of their optimum trip, however, class will always out.
See It Again shoulders top weight and is struggling for his next win, however, he is effective over this trip and is never far back at the highest level. Michael Roberts sent him up for the Summer Cup last year and he was far from disgraced, finishing fifth behind Atticus Finch, beaten just over two lengths but giving lumps of weight to the four in front of them.
He will no doubt prefer it further but he has enough class to pull this off.
Former Summer Cup winner Royal Victory. A class act on his day and something of a Turffontein specialist he has had some mental issues, sometime refusing to go to the start and was subsequently suspended. Nathan Kotzen has called in the services of ‘horse whisperer’ Glyn Redgrave and Royal Victory has since been passed fit to race. He falls into the same category as See It Again but you take his behavior on trust. Licence To Thrill has been in excellent form down the Hollywoodbets Scottsville straight for Mike Miller and the form of his last win has been franked. Although in mustard form he takes the turn over an extra furlong and does look to be held given the weight conditions of the race. Adam Azzie has his first runners after his move to Summerveld from the Highveld and saddles the filly Gimmefabulous. She has not been out since May but has obvious ability given that she was pitted against the best on the Highveld. She has a light weight to boot and Azzie will be more than happy to get off the mark first up.
An interesting runner on the day will be Gareth van Zyl’s charge Wild Justice in the last leg of the Pick 6. The son of Vercingetorix has a blue-blood pedigree and is unbeaten in two. He appears to have a touch of class but steps into the unknown in a useful field. Hierkommiebokke has been a national rallying cry over the past couple of months but the equine version has her first run for Dennis Bosch. She comes off some patchy Highveld form but is very well in at the weights and from the best of the draw could be the one the Wild Justice has beat. Icy Blast followed up on his good second to Licence To Thrill by winning next time out and appears to have appreciated the drop to a sprint and Muzi Yeni stays with the ride. Super Fast had his consistency rewarded last outing after a string of runners-up berths. He is up in class but has a light weight and can feature again.
In the seventh, many eyes will be on Treaty Of Paris. Mike Miller’s gelding has a hefty merit rating to live up to with but he is down in class from his last run and if running up to his rating he could be hard to peg back.
If he does fluff his lines, the consistent Duncan Howells-trained Dapper will be there to pick up the pieces. He is also down in class and gets 2.5kg relief from the saddle. He has not been out of the money in his last four and can go one better. Town Crier is lightly raced but started favourite first up in handicap company. He is up in class but has a light weight and the Stuart Ferrie stable is in good form of late. You have to get up early in the morning to catch MJ Odendaal as one is never quite sure what is the optimum distance for his horses. El Dante showed up well over a distance that appeared to be well short of his best last Sunday but should prefer this trip.
One of the better bets on the card could come in the first leg of the Bi-Pot in the Mike and Mathew de Kock gelding Bombardier Boy. He was a touch disappointing in an Open Maiden last run carrying top weight after making his debut on the poly. He takes on this field on equal terms and can make amends. Mfethu was a little disappointing last run after a smart effort behind the promising Exocet. Sean Veale should have had the pick of the rides and is aboard Bombardier Boy. Danger could be the filly Mystic Dancer. Robbie Hill’s filly comes off a lengthy break and takes on males but she made a smart debut and then ended her season a beaten odds-on favourite when finding Quickstepgal in the maidens. If not short of a run she will be competitive. Amber Alert found long-shot market support last start and showed some improvement.
In the first leg of the PA Annie’s Song is lightly raced but just needed her last run after returning from a lengthy break. She meets modest opposition. Lemon Thyme has shown some ability and the step up in trip should suit. Ms Galore raced too handy last run. Allowed to settle and run on she has a smart turn of foot and will be dangerous.
The Pick 6 races have a decidedly open look about them. In the first leg, Send Me has been up against stronger at recent outings on the poly. He gets relief from the saddle in a 2.5kg claiming apprentice and from the best of the draw should be competitive. Lou Lou The Legend is reunited with Sean Veale after winning a sprint three runs back. He steps up to a mile this time around but will have no trouble seeing it out.
The second leg is also wide open but has come well of late winning his last two over 2400m. This shorter trip could find him out but the stable is in good form and he should put in another good effort. Judged on rider bookings, French Trip looks to be the pick of the Duncan Howells pair. His recent form is not inspiring but the step up in trip could be what brings out the best. Stable companion Papa C has been consistent of late and can follow up on his last win although he is 1.5kg worse off with Riccardo who made sudden improvement last run.
In the next, La Maddalena steps up in trip but has been holding form well. She has a handy galloping weight and looks the part in another wide open race. Our Lady Fate is joint top weight but has also been in good form of late and stays the trip well. Princess Palace is a game front runner and was outpaced late over shorter last outing. She can do better this trip.

Outlaw King to lead in the country

There has always been something about Outlaw King and the way that he has chased some feature races and gained a reward 10 months ago when winning the Grade 2 De Grendel Cape Merchants. Never disgraced, he could gain a much-deserved fifth career victory in race 7 over 1400m at Hollywoodbets Durbanville today.
It was refreshing how he ran in his last start in the Grade 3 Race Coast Matchem Stakes over this course and distance, the marquee event at this course. He finished third, three lengths behind course specialist Questioning. That was a superb effort, giving some assurances that he has the game to be effective over this distance. He was often pigeon-holed as a top sprinter. His time in KwaZulu-Natal during Champions Season was meritorious, with some excellent runs without a big reward. His best run was in the Grade 3 Post Merchants over 1200m in July when he finished fifth behind I Am Giant, who won last Sunday.
Regular rider Craig Zackey is carded to take the ride for Dean Kannemeyer. Although this run could be to angle him towards the Merchants in mid-December, he still looks like he has added a new dimension to his game, which could make him effective anywhere.
Zeitz is a very interesting runner. He won the Listed Thukela Handicap on the same day as the Post Merchants on Hollywoodbets Durban July Day. He is totally untapped and he could come into his own in the coming months because the handicapper has probably underrated him. He has been well placed by trainer Andre Nel. Serino Moodley is carded to take the ride. He seems to get the most out of Zeitz. Expect him to step forward with this run under his belt, but he can certainly feature.
Respect the chances of Let It Be Said and Gallic Dream. Both are hard-knockers who give a good shot whenever they run. They should be something in and around the action.
The rest of the card has a good feel to it with some promising horses in action. Hazel Green ran her career best last time in a weak Apprentice Maiden. She was touched off by a short head by Elusive Gift over 1400m at this course. She is back to the same course over 1250m. If she shows sufficient speed out of the gates, she could get her maiden reward in a fairly moderate-looking event.
Time For Love is such a gallant trier and she could be the right horse in race 2 over 1800m under Muzi Yeni for Michelle Rix. She had a wonderful summer last campaign when she pushed the likes of the high-quality Rainbow Lorikeet in feature races. She is a never-say-die filly and the conditions of the race give her a massive sex concession. It is a small field and her rivals have either lost their form or are back from a break. She could be in the right place at the right time.
There was a ton to like about the run from Got The Look in her last effort and she must have a huge chance of winning race 3 over 1250m. She was outrun by 0,4 lengths over this course and distance by Reet Petite. That might have been tough to swallow at the time, but Reet Petite has franked her own form in one of the more impressive wins this month. She has feature race ability all over her. Aldo Domeyer is up for Candice Bass.
Flying South is a very unconfident pick in race 4 over 1250m. She had a lucrative winter season in KZN with some promising places but she returned home with a thud, never raising a gallop against winners when Miss New York beat her into eighth by 7,95 lengths over this course and distance. This field does not inspire much, hence she is given another chance. Include a few into calculations.
Greenchoice would be an aimer in race 5 over 1400m but for an awkward draw of No 11. He is still selected to overcome the hindrance, but confidence is slightly tempered. He was touched off by a short head in his most recent start over 1600m at this course. He nearly got away with a bold, positive ride. In his penultimate run he was beaten by the impressive Viva’s Liberte who has emerged as a contender for Grade 1 races this summer. It all points to Greenchoice.
Kinda Wonderful has not had much luck of late but she might make amends when she runs in race 6 over 1250m. Her last run over this course and distance was her penultimate effort when she ran second, close-up behind Dumbledore. Then she had to encounter a wide draw of No 11 in the Schweppes Diana Stakes over 1400m at the end of September and she still gave a bold effort finishing fifth behind the lightly-weighted She’s My World. She has a feature race win to her name as a two-year-old so there is no doubting her ability. She should come back to winning ways.
There was a ton to like about the way Gallic Victor won on debut at Hollywoodbets Scottsville in July when beating Sally Port by nearly three lengths. He has not been seen since. He returns in race 8 over 1600m. He looks like a big, imposing horse with a ton of presence – a typical Dean Kannemeyer horse. He might need the run a bit but he was definitely exciting when winning on debut and he could climb through the divisions if he confirms what he did on debut.
There are a few winning chances in race 9 over 1600m. Lomu has improved in leaps and bounds since going further than a sprint, which he is bred for so he is given the verdict. But this looks to be a hot maiden so all of Chance Encounter, Greek Heiress, World First and Diogenes are given chances of getting into the winners’ box.

DELACROIX PRIMED FOR QIPCO CHAMPION STAKES REMATCH WITH OMBUDSMAN

Aidan O’Brien hopes Delacroix can sign off on a winning note in a blockbuster edition of the G1 QIPCO Champion Stakes, highlight of QIPCO British Champions Day, Saturday, 18th October.
Delacroix takes on Ombudsman, the world’s highest-rated horse, for a third time this season. O’Brien’s runner unleashed a devastating burst to wear down Ombudsman in the G1 Coral-Eclipse but was three and a half lengths behind the Godolphin colt in a tactical renewal of the G1 Juddmonte International.
Delacroix franked the form in no uncertain terms last month with a dominant display in the G1 Irish Champion Stakes, in which he beat 2024 QIPCO Champion Stakes hero Anmaat by three-quarters of a length.
Speaking on a media call, O’Brien said: “We went gently with Delacroix after the Irish Champion Stakes and had our eye on this race while we waited for the lads to decide whether they wanted to go or not.
“The Eclipse was a normal-run race really, Delacroix just had a lot of things to overcome to win, and he did. York was a bit of a farce, and you would not see that type of race in a small conditions race, let alone a big Group One race like that.
“The plan in York was to follow the pacemaker if nobody else was going to, but it did not work out that way. Nobody wanted the race to happen the way it did, but it happened and hopefully Saturday is a properly run race.
“Races like this are what everybody does it for. We all want to see the best horses meeting on the big days, all the time, and the races being as competitive and as fair as possible. Whether it is owners, breeders, spectators, punters, that is what everybody wants.”
O’Brien has 11 runners in total on QIPCO British Champions Day, with his team also including Stay True in the upgraded G1 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup and The Lion In Winter in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (sponsored by QIPCO).
O’Brien said: “We always felt Stay True was going to be this type of horse, more so for next year, but it is nice to let him compete in these races to get a feel about him for next year. We felt he was not really there when he went to the St Leger – he got a bit tired and we will learn more about him on Saturday.
“The Lion In Winter had a very good run the last day in France. We think he has gone the right way since then, his preparation has gone well, and we are looking forward to seeing what he does on a track like Ascot.”
Kalpana spearheads a strong team for Andrew Balding as she goes for a repeat win in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes, following her seventh in the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
G1 City Of York Stakes victor Never So Brave lines up in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (sponsored by QIPCO), having already won the Buckingham Palace Stakes and G2 Summer Mile at the track this season. He is joined by stablemate Marvelman, an easy winner of the G2 Park Stakes at Doncaster.
Balding saddles progressive duo Almeric and Fox Legacy in the G1 QIPCO Champion Stakes. Almeric has won both of his starts this season, most recently taking the Listed Doonside Cup at Ayr, while Fox Legacy trounced some talented rivals in a conditions race at Glorious Goodwood on his latest start.
Balding said: “I think Kalpana ran better than it looked at Longchamp. The draw did not help and she was forced a little wider than we wanted to be. It is less than two weeks ago and she did have a hard race, which is the big question mark. It would be easier if they could talk but, reading the signs we can in terms of her appetite and appearance during exercise, she seems to have recovered well. I think she has an outstanding chance and I would be disappointed if she does not win.
“We were very impressed by Marvelman at Doncaster. He has always threatened to be a high-class horse and I think he is developing into that now. He is stepping up a furlong, which is an unknown, but we were keen to establish before his four-year-old campaign whether a mile is within his range.
“Never So Brave has done nothing wrong this year. He was very impressive, pretty much carrying top weight, in the Buckingham Palace at Royal Ascot and then he won the Summer Mile on the Round Course at Ascot. Then he won a Group One over seven furlongs last time. He is a high-class horse and deserves his chance in this race.
“It was frustrating because Almeric won the Feilden Stakes, beating a horse who has since won the Strensall Stakes, and they clocked a very good time figure on the day. He was entitled to come on for that and then got an injury, which meant he missed the French Derby. I thought he looked good at Ayr, albeit in another Listed race, but he was carrying a penalty. We are pitching him in at the deep end, but hopefully in time he will be capable of mixing it at the top level.
“I think Fox Legacy has really found his feet. He had a couple of races close together, so we decided to keep him fresh for this race with the thought that it would cut up a bit, but I don’t think it has. It looks as deep a Champion Stakes as we have had for a few years and the plan has slightly backfired, but he is a capable horse.
“I see Flora Of Bermuda is drawn one in the QIPCO British Champions Sprint. Let’s just hope there is a draw bias to the far side as this draw does not give us many options. She has been placed in three or four Group Ones, unlucky in a couple, and she really deserves to have her day in sun.”
Jerome Reynier hopes Lazzat or Facteur Cheval can provide France with an eighth winner on QIPCO British Champions Day.
Lazzat is one of the leading contenders for the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint, having excelled over the course and distance when beating Satono Reve in the G1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Reynier said: “Lazzat was unreal at Royal Ascot – he looked very good that day. He had a battle with the Japanese contender and I was scared the race was going to be tough on him, but physically and mentally he was the same afterwards.
“We were disappointed to be beaten in the Prix Maurice de Gheest but Sajir on the day was really good. In the Haydock Sprint Cup, Lazzat was drawn in the middle and there was a bias towards the stands’ rail. He was not beaten far but was always under pressure, which is not the way he is usually.
“This time, he is spot on and back on a racecourse he has done so well at. He seems very happy to be back at home because, between the Maurice de Gheest and Haydock, he was based in Deauville, which is not the training environment he is used to. We have benchmarks in the mornings on what he can achieve and, honestly, he has been very well for the past few weeks. Now he needs to show the world that he is the best European sprinter.”
Facteur Cheval lines up in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (sponsored by QIPCO) for a third consecutive year, having finished second behind Big Rock in 2023 and Charyn 12 months ago. The six-year-old has been off the track since finishing sixth in the G1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Reynier said: “Facteur Cheval was very tired after Royal Ascot and lost a bit of condition, so we gave him a lot of time during the summer. He was entered in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp in September but it came too soon.
“Because he has run so well fresh, we thought it was good to go straight to the QEII, a race he has run really well in for the last two years. Those races were different scenarios as the ground was much softer, whereas this year it will be good ground, although he achieved one of his best results on good ground in Meydan when he won the Dubai Turf. It should not be a problem.
“There are some very good horses in the race, and he is a bit of an outsider at 16/1, but he showed he can compete with the best in the world in Dubai when winning at a big price.”
