Dean Kannemeyer & Lady Christine Laidlaw

Solid Speed on familiar path

History has been given a chance of repeating itself in more ways than one after the Dean Kannemeyer-trained Solid Speed’s win of the Gr 2 Betting World 1900 on Friday night at Greyville.

Kannemeyer arrived in KZN without a serious Vodacom Durban July horse last season and ended up winning it with Power King.

Solid Speed, thought previously to be more of a Gold Cup horse, now has a chance of repeating the dose and jockey Anthony Delpech said after the race, “He is definitely a July horse and with a chance.”

However, pressed on whether he wanted the ride, he obviously stalled.

Delpech, as a high profile jockey who has won the July a record equalling four times and has a normal riding weight of just 53,5kg, will be spoilt for choice.

The ruling 9/2 favourite with Betting World, Black Arthur, is likely first choice in his mind at present.

However, Solid Speed has shortened from 20/1 into 10/1 and is best priced of the older horses alongside initial favourite Legal Eagle, whose participation is up in the air.

Solid Speed (Nkosi Hlophe)

Solid Speed (Nkosi Hlophe)

Solid Speed was one of the best weighted horses under Friday night’s conditions and under the new handicapping guidelines looks likely to be raised only three points to a merit rating of 106.

That was the exact mark Power King won the July off. As things stand he will, like Power King, scrape into the handicap with the minimum weight for an older male of 53kg.

The final history-repeating fact is Solid Speed’s colours, the same as Power King’s.

Owner Lady Christine Laidlaw was not on course on Friday night, but could perhaps have been watching from Cape Town. Power King’s ears might have pricked at any celebratory cheers as he is now enjoying his retirement on Lady Laidlaw’s Goede Hoop estate in Noordhoek.

It was a fine ride by Delpech. Dynamic had been expertly slotted in by Grant van Niekerk from a wide draw, while the fast early pace had also allowed Delpech to ease inward from draw 9. He sat behind Dynamic one wide in midfield.

However, coming up the hill he switched his mount outward, due to the pace slowing “and he has such a big stride”. It might have been a race-winning move because he was able to enter the straight with plenty of momentum and steal a march on Dynamic. The latter looked to have no excuses 2,15 lengths back in third and like last year it will be touch and go whether he qualifies for the big race.

The Conglomerate (Nkosi Hlophe)

The Conglomerate (Nkosi Hlophe)

The runner up St Tropez ran in strongly from near the back and can be considered a touch unlucky. The stipendiaries called a review after Solid Speed had hung outward, but not surprisingly no further action was taken. However, although St. Tropez’s momentum or stride was not affected, he did have to change course slightly and was only beaten a neck.

It was a fine come back run for St Tropez, who being by Silvano will likely be coming into his own as a four-year-old. He has always had class and has duly shortened from 55/1 to 14/1 in the July betting. However, if raised the likely two points to 101 he will, as things stand, be officially 2,5kg under sufferance in the July.

The Conglomerate was also expertly ridden by Anton Marcus in the early stages which allowed him to slot in behind Solid Speed from a wide draw.

He plugged on steadily in the straight, finishing 2,2 lengths back in fourth, and looks likely to appreciate the step up in trip in the July. He was 0,5kg under sufferance with Dynamic and might possibly be given a one point raise to 102, but this will still leave him 2kg under sufferance in the July as things stand. Nevertheless, he shortened in the betting from 14/1 to 12/1.

It Is Written had every chance in finishing a 2,45 length fifth and King Of Pain also had few excuses 2,95 lengths back in sixth.

Master Switch and Greek Legend were likely ridden too handy in the overall fast-paced race to be at their most effective and were disappointing in sixth and seventh respectively.

Dynamic, meanwhile, has shortened from 125/1 into 25/1 for the July and this is the same price as an earlier impressive winner on the card, Paterfamilias.

However, Mike Bass’ assistant trainer Robert Fayd’Herbe had his doubts Paterfamilias, whose issues have been helped at Summerveld by the use of the Equi-Spa, would line up for the big race as he still had plenty of other options for this season and next. The Gr 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge will be his chief aim this season.

Fayd’Herbe added Silver Mountain was found to have had a few niggles with her feet after her disappointing Daisy Fillies Guineas run, but had recovered well. However, he said she would likely avoid the Gr 1 Woolavington 2000 in favour of the Tibouchina over 1400m, so the July looks likely to no longer be on her radar. This makes sense as Nightingale will be a huge runner in the Woolavington and is doing well at Summerveld.

The most impressive July trial of the weekend was undoubtedly by the Bass-trained Marinaresco, who won the Gr 3 Winter Classic over 1800m easing up and he has duly shortened to 8/1 second favourite.

Neil Bruss has a high regard for his filly Deputy Ryder, who won Friday night’s Listed East Cost Cup, and even entered her for the July. She looks one to follow in the staying features and will be a big runner in the Track and Ball Oaks.

The two-year-old winners on Friday night, the Mike de Kock-trained Misty Birnam and the Dennis Drier-trained Sail, caught the eye. Drier said Sail was likely to avoid Scottsville in favour of the Golden Slipper on July day.

Solid Speed confirms his credentials

Solid Speed had his Gr1 Vodacom Durban July odds slashed by half after converting favouritism in the Gr2 Betting World 1900 at Greyville on Friday evening. 20-1 before the event, Solid Speed was cut to 10-1 by the sponsors while the odds on runner-up St Tropez were slashed from 55-1 to 14-1 after running the favourite to a neck.

Dean Kannemeyer and rider Anthony Delpech had to chew their nails on the outcome of a race review but although Solid Speed did shift off a straight course, he did so following St Tropez, and there was no further action.

It was a race were many had chances but Solid Speed hammered his peg into the ground as far as the July goes.

A winner of the Gr2 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup this time last year, but Power King the preferred July runner,

Solid Speed (Nkosi Hlophe)

Solid Speed (Nkosi Hlophe)

Kannemeyer aimed Solid Speed at the then Gr1 eLan Gold Cup rather than the July. Starting favourite for the Gold Cup he finished with just three behind him after pulling up lame behind.

Since then he has won three of his four starts, two over a ‘mile’ – a distance deemed short of his best – and on Friday night’s performance he will have gained a host of new supporters for the July, a race that Kannemeyer has won three times, first up with champion sire Dynasty, the sire of Solid Speed.

St Tropez put a disastrous Gr1 Summer Cup behind him as Kegan de Melo followed Solid Speed through the traffic and chased him hard to the line to enhance his July credentials.

A piece of paper separated Dynamic and The Conglomerate although both were given every chance. But with the July in mind, it was a decent showing by both from tough outside draws.

Also catching the eye was the grey King Of Pain. A former winner of the Gr1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge over 1600m at Clairwood, he looks to have matured into a solid stayer. He won over two miles last time out and was doing his best work late on Friday. The Gr3 Gold Vase and the Gr2 eLan Gold Cup look tailor made.

Earlier Sail, in spite of getting herself into a stew before the start, put her hand up for the Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship in a fortnight’s time with a game performance in a Juvenile Plate. She bounced her way to the start but once in the race settled nicely and quickened through into the lead as pacemaker Announcing Rain folded. She was chased hard by Dawn Calling, the line coming just in time, but it was a top effort.

This was a seven-furlong event but previously she had doddled her maiden over the Allan Robertson course and distance which augurs well for her chances.

More to come from Greek Legend

The Gr 2 Betting World 1900 turned out to be the best pointer to last year’s Vodacom Durban July so will be watched with keen interest by punters tonight, although it is overall a slightly weaker contest than last year’s event according to official merit ratings.

The Listed East Coast Cup over 2000m is another classy race the purist can look forward to.

Solid Speed (Nkosi Hlophe)

Solid Speed (Nkosi Hlophe)

Big things were expected of Greek Legend in the three-year-old classics last year, but he was side-lined with a suspensory injury. He showed his class last time out at Turffontein over 1600m when rocketing home from a seemingly beaten position to end the unbeaten record of Chepardo. Trainer Mike Azzie regards him as “way better” than his 91 merit rating, so he could overcome his official weight disadvantage. Judging by his relaxed gait, he should not be bothered by the new course or running under lights, and his usual blinkers should help too. His tremendous turn of foot should make him suited to the track and a false rail of three metres should ensure his good draw of two is favourable. He is a half-brother to Gold Cup winner Wavin’ Flag so should have no problem seeing out the trip.

Master’s Eye is an eyecatching individual and having looked at the stands for virtually the entire length of the straight at Scottsville last time, the fitting of blinkers make him an interesting contender. He has a good draw and gets the trip.

Solid Speed possesses a touch of class and although best suited to further his easiest career win was over tonight’s distance on the Greyville poly.

The Conglomerate (Liesl King)

The Conglomerate (Liesl King)

The Conglomerate stayed on quite well in the IOS Drill Hall and will be ideally course and distance suited, but has a tricky draw.

St Tropez has class and being by Silvano should come into his own this season. He has won returning from a layoff before.

Dynamic should be cherry ripe and the yard would have made him a big runner from a better draw.

Master Switch won well over 2000m last time, beating Greek Legend comfortably, but the latter likely needed it in his first race for six months and will now be 3,5kg better off.

Halve The Deficit will be a big runner if reproducing his Vodacom Durban July run off this lowered merit rating. He wasn’t disgraced in the Premier’s Champions Challenge last time and is better suited to Greyville.

His stablemate Gold Onyx is well known for his short run in and can never be written off at Greyville.

Serissa should ensure a good pace for his stablemates.

Last year’s winner Dynastic Power jumps from an even wider draw and has it a bit tougher at the weights but has enjoyed a good preparation.

King Of Pain has proven class, but is unpredictable. His best career victory followed a similar layoff.

It Is Written will be a runner provided he settles in his first attempt at this trip as he tends to be a bit headstrong, but has a fine turn of foot.

Halve The Deficit (Nkosi Hlophe)

Halve The Deficit (Nkosi Hlophe)

Night Shadow is 4,5kg under sufferance but has been an immature sort who is on the way up and there is not much between him and both Dynastic Power and It Is Written.

The selection is Greek Legend to beat Master’s Eye with Solid Speed, Halve The Deficit and St. Tropez next best.

The East Coast Cup could also produce a good value winner in Zante. Her fourth place finish in last year’s Gr 1 Woolavington 2000 was against some of the best of a vintage crop and she had too much to do when finishing strongly in the Scarlet Lady last time over the too sharp 1750m.

Gallica Rose has plenty of class and will be a worthy favourite over an ideal course and distance.

Deputy Ryder is also course and distance suited and seems to thrive in KZN.

Intergalactic is an improving sort who is proven over the trip.

Tonya is also on the way up and caught the eye last time when winning well at Scottsville over 1950m.

They are selected in the order mentioned.

There are some good horses in the other six races on the card, which starts with two interesting Juvenile Plates over 1400m.

Gallica Rose (Nkosi Hlophe)

Gallica Rose (Nkosi Hlophe)

Secret Captain was green and far from tuned up when running on to win over 1200m on debut at Scottsville and will appreciate the step up in trip in the first. He is likely to improve and will need to in order to beat Misty Birnam and Lee’s Star.

Sail will relish the step up in trip in the second and can exact revenge on Princess Analia.

Alexis thrives in KZN and loves Greyville so is the one to beat in the third over an ideal 1400m with Marcus up from a good draw.

Paterfamilias has shown this season why he has always been well regarded and can win the fourth running fresh over too sharp a trip, but if he fluffs his lines his stable mate Night Trip can go in.

Captain’s Vista caught the eye with a fluent finish to win a 1600m maiden at Scottsville and from pole position has a chance in the seventh over 1400m as he should progress. The step down in trip might not be ideal and Fantasy Art and a few others could also be included.

Lookamee looks likely to relish the course and distance of the last and is well drawn with Marcus up.

Power ride for Byleveld

MJ Byleveld went within a neck of winning last year’s Gr 2 Betting World 1900 and is ironically aboard the horse which beat him, Dynastic Power, in Friday night’s renewal at Greyville.

Byleveld’s mount from last year, Power King, famously went on to win the country’s premier race, the Vodacom Durban July, albeit with Stuart Randolph aboard, while Dynastic Power found himself in the Milnerton yard of Vaughan Marshall at the beginning of this season after the retirement of his former trainer Stan Elley.

Byleveld said Dynastic Power had come on from his SA Champions Season pipe opener at Scottsville and added, “He is doing very well, we’re very happy with him.”

The defending champion was drawn a tricky 12 last year and now has to overcome the widest draw of all in the 16 horse field.

However, Byleveld said the five-year-old Dynasty gelding, who appears to thrive at Summerveld, had enough pace to find a handy position from there.

Dynastic Power (Nkosi Hlophe)

Last time out, in the Listed Sledgehammer over 1750m at Scottsville, Byleveld sent Dynastic Power to the front due to the lack of pace and after relaxing well he stayed on bravely for a 0,2 length third.

A similarly slowly paced race would possibly suit him as it would prevent him from having to use up too much energy early from the wide draw.

In last year’s race he was caught two-wide in about sixth place, but did have some cover and found a strong finish.

Last year his 98 merit rating saw him near the top of the 99 to 95 band of merit ratings and having to carry only 54kg.

This year in a slightly weaker race overall he is off a 101 merit rating, which puts him near the bottom of the 104 to 100 band, and he has to carry 58kg. He is officially 1kg under sufferance with the best weighted horses in the race, who are all of Gold Onyx (107, 60kg), Halve The Deficit (103, 58kg), Master’s Eye (103, 58kg), Solid Speed (103, 58kg) and St Tropez (99, 56kg).

Contrary to most seasons, the 1900 turned out to be last year’s best July pointer as third-placed Punta Arenas went on to finish runner up to Power King in the big one.

Delpech opts for Speed

Anthony Delpech opted to ride Solid Speed from a choice of two Gr 2 Betting World 1900 contenders from the Dean Kannemeyer yard and this has left Stuart Randolph to deal with the talented but headstrong It Is Written.

Delpech felt Solid Speed had a “tough task”, despite his current status as 9/2 favourite with the sponsor, citing the 1900m trip as being “a bit too short for him”.

The tough five-year-old Dynasty gelding did win a good race over 1600m at Scottsville in his SA Champions Season pipe opener last time out, when staying on strongly to beat Dynamic, and Delpech said, “Yes, he is the sort who can come out and run well fresh. He has ability and is not without a chance tomorrow night.”

Solid Speed has a high strike rate, having won exactly half of his 14 career starts. He recorded a hattrick at Greyville last season, winning his pipe opener in a 1900m handicap with ease, before winning both the Highland Night Cup and the Gr 3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup over 2400m.

He is now off a 103 merit rating, his highest mark to date, and is officially the best in at the weights together with four other horses. He jumps from a tricky draw of 10. Delpech concluded, “He has been doing well at home (Sumerveld).”

It Is Written (Nkosi Hlophe)

It Is Written (Nkosi Hlophe)

It Is Written was unlucky last time out in the Listed Sledgehammer over 1750m at Scottsville, having been hampered late before flying up for a neck second.

Randolph said the key was whether he could switch the five-year-old Dynasty gelding off or not. He said, “He has a tendency to over do it, so you’ve got to be careful, but if he settles he should see out the trip. He is probably most effective from 1400m to a mile, so I will be hoping for a true run race.”

It Is Written did settle well from a good draw of two in the Sledgehammer, but Randolph said it had been “touch and go.”

The pole position draw tomorrow night augurs well for his chances of finding the necessary cover, but the step up in trip could be a problem, because behind a slower pace it will be that much tougher to switch him off. He is 8/1 with the race sponsors and can’t be written off, as long as he manages to relax from the off.

Geoff Woodruff

Woodruff buoyed by Switch

Geoff Woodruff has been “encouraged” by the recent form of his Gr 2 Betting World 1900 contender Master Switch, who arrived at Summerveld from Randjesfontein on Tuesday evening.

Woodruff said Anton Marcus’ decision to ride The Conglomerate in the race did have  a bit to do with the weights, as Master Switch had originally been set to carry 54kg, before the weights were dragged up 2kg due to none of the runners being in the 110-114 merit rated band. However, his big race rider Callan Murray knows him well from training track work.

The four-year-old Jet Master gelding looks to be going the right way, but Woodruff said the race would tell how good he was. He is versatile in style, having done well from the front, from handy and from off the pace.

Master Switch was raised six points to a 98 merit rating for his win last time out at Turffontein over 2000m. He drew away well to beat Fort Meyers by 1,5 lengths in that race on April 16. However, the latter could only manage a 1,9 length third, albeit off a three point higher merit rating, in a handicap over 2000m at the Vaal on Tuesday.

However, Sean Tarry named Master Switch as one of the horses to beat in the 1900 earlier this week, so clearly has a good regard for Fort Meyers.

Master Switch carries 56kg and is officially 0,5kg under sufferance. He has a plum draw of three and is 14/1 with the race sponsor.

Mike Azzie (Nkosi Hlophe)

Value about Greek Legend

Mike Azzie’s Gr 2 Betting World 1900 contender Greek Legend will officially be 2kg under sufferance in Friday night’s race at Greyville, but Azzie regards this son of Black Minnaloushe as “way better” than his current 91 merit rating.

He elaborated, “We always rated Greek Legend better than Deputy Jud before he was hurt, and Deputy Jud finished third in the Gr 1 SA Classic and second in the Gr 1 SA Derby (before winning the Gr 2 Supreme Cup over 1450m on the Vaal sand).”

Greek Legend arrived at Summerveld the week after his win at Turffontein on April 30. That day, in a MR 102 handicap over 1600m, the blinkered gelding was making steady progress down the straight, but was a bit tight for room. However, when seeing daylight he found another rocket-like gear, which propelled him to the front from a seemingly beaten position.

He suffered a suspensory injury midway through his three-year-old season and his last outing was only his third run since February 2015.

He appears to be thriving at Summerveld and Azzie said, “He has improved a lot in soundness and fitness. He is eating well and has shed the winter coat he had, his coat now has a lovely sheen to it.”

Jockey JP van der Merwe mentioned only two horses he rides which could be followed for the rest of the season when being interviewed shortly after his J&B Met victory on Smart Call. One of them was Greek Legend.

From a draw of three and carrying only 54kg, Greek Legend looks to be a big runner tomorrow night, provided he takes to the new course and the lights, and as one who relaxes superbly in the running and has a fine turn of foot there is no reason why he shouldn’t.

Neil Bruss

Bruss holds strong hand

Neil Bruss sends out two classy fillies in the Listed East Coast Cup over 2000m on Friday night at Greyville, Deputy Ryder and Zante, and he favours the former but also gives the latter a chance because “she stays well.”

They look the pair to beat, although there are many horses with winning chances.

Bruss’s pair of horses are respectively by two of the current most talked about sires in the country, Go Deputy and Ideal World.

Go Deputy is the sire of SA Triple Crown hero Abashiri and his progeny not only stay well but show notable improvement in their four-year-old seasons.

Deputy Ryder showed her class last season in Durban by winning the Listed Queen Palm Stakes over 2400m at Greyville in eyecatching style.

However, her Cape Summer season did not pan out well for her after a bad start. An attempt to steal the slow run Listed Woolavington Handicap over 2400m, her opening race in the summer, by circling the field and sending her clear left her exhausted.

Neil Bruss

Neil Bruss

However, her three unplaced efforts and a fourth place finish overall in the summer did at least see her merit rating dropping one point to 94. Her penultimate run in the summer, when only 4,6 lengths behind Inara in the Gr 1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes over the too sharp 1600m showed also she has not lost her zest.

In her SA Champions Season pipe opener she finished a 0,25 length second to the classy Joey Ramsden-trained Gallica Rose in the Listed Scarlet Lady over 1750m at Scottsville and now faces her on identical terms. Both horses will be having their second runs after respective two month layoffs and both will relish the step up in trip. However a significant point is a reversal in draw fortunes in Deputy Ryder’s favour despite her having to still jump from a tricky draw of 8.

Grant can Niekerk rides Deputy Ryder, while Anthony Delpech retains the ride on the race’s defending champion Gallica Rose.

The latter has class and will likely start favourite.

Zante had too much to do in the straight of the Scarlet Lady but was flying at the finish to be just 2,35 lengths back in fifth. She faces Gallica Rose on the same terms again and has a similar draw to the one she had in that race (9 compared to 8). An interesting point in her form is her fourth place finish in last year’s Gr 1 Woolavington 2000 amidst some of the best of an extraordinarily good crop. She will relish the step back up to that trip and could provide the best value in the race. Donovan Dillon replaces S’Manga Khumalo.

Gathering Fame (Nkosi Hlophe)

Gathering Fame (Nkosi Hlophe)

Ramsden also has two runners. The disappointing Grey Light attempts the trip for the first time. Her site Tapit, being a Gr 1 winner over 1800m gives her a chance of seeing it out, but on the other hand her second dam Harry’s Charm was a champion sprinter. She is officially 3,5kg under sufferance with Gallica Rose.

The Dennis Drier-trained Gathering Fame is said by the yard to be in good shape at Summerveld but she would have probably preferred this race to be at Scottsville. She finished a 1,5 length fourth to Gallica Rose last year but is now 4,5kg worse off and drawn wide.

Intergalactic (Nkosi Hlophe)

Intergalactic (Nkosi Hlophe)

Ma Choix plugged in from last after being dropped out from a wide draw in the Scarlet Lady and was 4,7 lengths back at the line. She faces Gallica Rose on the same weight terms, so has a bit to do but is now drawn in pole and should have come on from the run.

Tonya is the dark horse. She is officially 3kg under sufferance with Gallica Rose but is a progressive three-year-old and caught the eye in her victorious pipe opener over 1950m at Scottsville considering she was quite strong in the running.

Intergalactic is also a progressive three-year-old and is officially only 1kg under sufferance with Gallica Rose. She was a staying on fifth in the Gr 2 Daisy Guineas, has proved she stays the trip and Anton Marcus is up from a fair draw of six.

Cassie O’Malley has a chance of beating Intergalactic on a line through Inaninstant. Her dour galloping style is not usually suited to the tight Greyville track, but can sometimes be effective if the jockey can time it right from the front. She is 1kg under sufferance with Gallica Rose.

The yard said they would be thrilled with a place for Kileigh, who is officially 1kg under sufferance, but achieved her current mark on the polytrack.

Speedy Chestnut is 4kg under sufferance with Gallica Rose and needs to improve on her first two KZN runs.

It is an intriguing race and Zante is chosen to cause the upset with Gallica Rose, Deputy Ryder, Intergalactic and Tonya next best.

Justin Snaith (Nkosi Hlophe)

All about the draw

Justin Snaith made the four-year-old Jet Master gelding Master’s Eye the elect of his two runners in the Gr 2 Betting World 1900, to be run at Greyville this Friday night, but that sentiment was based entirely on the draw.

Justin Snaith (Nkosi Hlophe)

Justin Snaith (Nkosi Hlophe)

Master’s Eye is drawn five with Richard Fourie up, while Grant Van Niekerk has a tough task overcoming draw 15 on Dynamic.

Master’s Eye could not find cover last time from a tricky draw over 1750m at Scottsville in the Listed Sledgehammer Stakes in his SA Champions Season pipe opener. His head was then twisted sideways throughout the straight. Snaith confirmed the horse had been looking at the stands. He didn’t expect a repeat of that antic on Friday night. Master’s Eye looks to be a big runner as he is officially joint best in at the weights and from a good draw should find cover over a step up in trip he will appreciate.

Snaith said Dynamic had come on well from his Champions Season pipe opener when caught late over 1600m at Scottsville. He added, “He would be a big runner if it weren’t for the draw.”

Dynamic will officially be 0,5kg under sufferance with the best in.
