Betting World 1900 Final Field

The competitive battle for a place in the final field for the R4.25-million, Grade 1 Vodacom Durban July goes into its next round at Greyville Racecourse next Friday, 20 May 2016, where 12 of the 17 runners carded for the R400 000, Grade 2 Betting World 1900 are entries for Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event taking place on Saturday, July 2.

The three-year-olds have already shown they could feature strongly in the final 18-horse field for the country’s premier event after some top performances in the Canon Guineas and Daisy Fillies Guineas and with the Daily News 2000 and Woolavington 2000 still to come at the end of the month their influence could become even greater.

St Tropez (Nkosi Hlophe)

St Tropez (Nkosi Hlophe)

The legendary Betting World 1900 that will be run for the 90th time on May 20 and will also mark the final TGIF regular night racemeeting at Greyville for the current season to return on a regular basis on September 23.

The race will be one of the last chances for the older horses to impress the July selection panel with only the Rising Sun Gold Challenge and Cup Trial to come and runners like Master’s Eye, Solid Speed, Dynastic Power and The Conglomerate, that are currently on the outside looking in on the Log, will need solid performances if they are to enhance their chances.

The Betting World 1900 has always been seen as one of the major pointers to the Vodacom Durban July and has produced nine horses that have gone on to win the coveted event in the same year. With a lot at stake one could see a much improved run from the Joey Ramsden-trained gelding The Conglomerate and a few others. The four-year-old displayed top-level ability as a three-year-old but he lost his way in the latter part of last year.

With this being his second run after being gelded, he could show considerable improvement on his less than spirited performance in the Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes and this would certainly have the July selection panel sitting up and taking greater interest in his potential as a big race participant.

Another Ramsden runner, St Tropez, has had two races since running second to Ultimate Dollar in the tabGOLD 2200 last year but will have his first outing since running unplaced from a wide draw in the Summer Cup in November. His major bid for a Vodacom Durban July berth could be aimed at the Rising Sun Gold Challenge with this race being a “pipe-opener” after such a long break but top stables know how to get horses ready and even if needing the outing he could be very competitive.

On the other hand, Solid Speed and It Is Written from the Dean Kannemeyer stable are both in good form and could be major players in this race and make an impression for the big race. This could apply also to runners like the Justin Snaith-trained Dynastic Power that finished third in the recent Sledgehammer and Master Switch from the Geoff Woodruff yard that was third in the Drumstar in April and won a pinnacle stakes race comfortably over 2 000 at Turffontein in his last outing.

It’s all about the pace

Tevez has 5kg in hand – in theory at any rate – in the Racing. It’s A Rush Pinnacle Stakes at Kenilworth tomorrow, and that’s a huge amount.

Tevez (Liesl King)

Tevez (Liesl King)

Admittedly the dual Merchants winner has to give away lumps of weight and he has been off for three and a half months but he is going to start favourite and he was 15-10 with World Sports Betting early yesterday afternoon.

“Often he needs his first run back but he is doing well,” says Candice Robinson. “However he wants things to go his way – he needs a good pace, to sit off them and be covered up. If he is too handy he doesn’t run his race.”

Indeed it’s the pace, or rather the possible lack of it, that is almost certainly his biggest danger. It certainly won’t be the lung-bursting gallop that brings out the best in him in races like the Merchants and so often Pinnacles are used as a prep for something else. This is not the case with Tevez because he is not going to Durban and is out to earn his keep until the big competitive Cape Town sprints come round again.

Harry Lime, 7-2 second favourite, is 3kg better with Tevez for three and three-quarter lengths in the Cape Flying Championship which should not be enough, and he was based in Port Elizabeth for his last two runs. “He’s got a small chance and the claim will help,” is the view of Justin Snaith.

Harry Lime (Nkosi Hlophe)

Harry Lime (Nkosi Hlophe)

Tomorrow is the first time at Kenilworth for Lyle Hewitson, the former champion work-rider who is notching up the winners at a rate of knots. “He is talented and he is doing a lot of work-riding for me in Durban,” says Snaith.

Captain Bagg (6-1) should help the Tevez cause because he likes making the running although the shrewd Eric Sands will no doubt instruct Grant Behr to ensure that he doesn’t go a Tevez pace!

Interestingly the computer prediction has Harry Lime winning by a neck from Captain Bagg with Tevez failing to quicken and being beaten the best part of four lengths. It reckons 11-2 chance Kirumbo will finish fourth even though he is 1.5kg better with Captain Bagg for last time’s four-tenths of a length.

Olympian (10-1) is much better than the bare form of his seventh in a Pinnacle in March because he lost his chance at the gate that day but Buckinghampshire, Western Storm and Albarakah have surely been off too long to count here.

The Ramsden two-year-olds are on song and Table Bay showed enough first time to suggest he can win the first. He is a big price at 7-1 and 15-10 favourite China Pearl looks good 35 minutes later.

Ruler Of The Sky (Nkosi Hlophe)

Ready for the step up

There look to be some decent opportunities for punters at both tonight’s polytrack meeting at Greyville and Saturday’s workrider’s meeting on the Turffontein Standside track.

Friday night’s first race over 1600m looks to be a match race between Black Hall Bar and Eden Gardens Glitz. However, the former is given the vote having had two runs under the belt and now likely to be cherry ripe over a step up in trip she will appreciate.

Ruler Of The Sky (Nkosi Hlophe)

Ruler Of The Sky (Nkosi Hlophe)

In the second race Step Up looks to have plenty of scope and the step up to 1600m should suit, although Highway Eightyfive caught the eye over 1200m on the poly last time and should also go close with Anthony Delpech now up.

The third race is an intriguing contest. Anton Marcus has retained faith in the big and long-striding Ruler Of The Sky, following her comfortable back to back victories over 1400m and 1600m respectively on the poly. She is perfectly drawn in pole position for her relaxed, front-running style. However, a big threat could be the Cape horse Grey Light. She has overall been a disappointing sort, but her best runs have been on the Greyville poly, including a 7,5 length romp over course and distance in her third career start in a Novice Plate. Her poly runs last season were consequently a touch disappointing, but now off a merit rating six points lower she should be competitive. Mayfair’s three runs on the poly have all been good and she bounced back to form on the turf last time with a close second over this trip at Greyville. She looks to be competitively merit rated and should be in the shake up.

In the fourth race over 1600m Desert Fighter is by Toreador out of the useful 1400-1600m horse Sahara and should see out the trip. The 71 merit rating he was given after his facile maiden win looked lenient and it proved so when he romped home next time out over 1200m in a handicap on the poly. He could still be ahead of the handicapper after a five point raise. Lonelyarethebrave has taken to the poly like a duck to water and could be a threat despite his six point raise for his easy last win over course and distance. Oh Boy’s last outing didn’t pan out well and with a 4kg claimer up he could produce a strong finish from off the pace from a plum draw which could carry him into the first three.

The fifth is a Graduation Plate over 1800m. Liege has always struck as one who would improve with age and he is well weighted here over an ideal trip and has Delpech up. Ole Gunnar has a touch of class and is third best in at the weights over a step up in trip he looks likely to relish. What A Poet is second best in at the weights and being by Dylan Thomas, who won six Gr 1s between 10 and 12 furlongs, he should also relish the step up in trip.

Variable Pitch (Nkosi Hlophe)

Variable Pitch (Nkosi Hlophe)

In the sixth over 1000m Zinnavar could have a suppressed merit rating having run against some good sorts in Cape Town and this speedy sort is the one to beat, although he has a tricky draw of eight. Variable Pitch had some useful maiden form last year and won easily over course and distance in his recent second run after a layoff. The form has been franked and off a 70 merit rating and a 2,5kg claimer up he only has to carry an effective 50kg, so should be thereabouts from draw three. Fire The Rocket is course and distance suited and perfectly drawn and is only two points higher than his last win. Big King, Kept Secret and Elephant Matriarch can’t be ignored in this competitive race.

The last over 1200m is also competitive, although the one to beat in a weak field could be Burnburry. He clearly hated the blinkers last time and before that had caught the eye running on over this trip. The two-year-old Pep Squad wasn’t disgraced in a strong field last time over 1160m at Turffontein and from a good draw with Anton Marcus up looks likely to improve. Burnburry’s stablemate Honeysuckle Rose has some hard knocking form from 1200m up to 1400m and from draw three with Bernard Fayd’Herbe up could be involved. Le Monde and the Australian-bred two-year-old first-timer Sweet Pleasures also have to be considered.

At Turffontein on Saturday Just a Gigolo is an intriguing runner in the second race. He has always tended to over race over 1400m and beyond, and his best race was duly when dropped to 1200m, where he finished a close third despite jumping from a very tough draw. He is now back over 1200m and is probably drawn on the right side. Furthermore, the head gear which had seemed to make his over racing antics worse, is now off.

In the sixth race Sheet Weaver is likely improving being by Ideal World and the form of his first attempt over this 2000m trip makes him hard to oppose here. A similarly difficult draw did not bother him last time and he has one of the best workriders in Chamu Mabaya aboard.

april l laidlaw

Owner of the Month – April 2016

Lady Christine Laidlaw

Lady Laidlaw, who races some horses in Europe, entered the South African racing scene in 2008 under the Khaya Stables banner when purchasing the subsequent dual Guineas winner Noordhoek Flyer at the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sales and selected Cape trainer Dean Kannemeyer to take care of his future.

Since then, through her local racing manager Jean Malherbe of Form Bloodstock, she has invested in a number of horses and has had considerable success in Graded races including the Grade 1 Vodacom Durban July and the Grade 1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and has won the Guineas both in the Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

She buys horses on a regular basis and according to Kannemeyer, normally runs a stable of about 10 selectively chosen quality horses.

Lady Laidlaw spends her summers in the Cape and last year made her first and only visit to Durban where she was on hand to lead in her Vodacom Durban July winner, Power King.

During the past month Khaya Stables runners won five races in KwaZulu-Natal operating out of the Kannemeyer satellite yard at Summerveld, an achievement well worth the monthly award.

Well done Lady Laidlaw

Baritone (Nkosi Hlophe)

New route for Baritone

Justin Snaith has scratched the Byerley Turk runner up Baritone from the Vodacom Durban July following his disappointing Canon Guineas run last Friday night, but is upbeat about his respective Canon Guineas and Daisy Guineas winners Black Arthur and Bela-Bela.

He said Baritone had pulled up a bit “jarred up” and had also “choked up” due to the pressure of the tight finish in a fast run race.

The current restrictions placed on travel back to Cape Town, due to a recent case of African Horse Sickness (AHS) in the AHS Surveillance Zone, means Baritone has no option but to stay put in KZN.

Snaith said the Trippi colt would be monitored before a new route was decided upon. He believed there would be a question mark over the Daily News 2000 trip, but would nominate him for the Gr 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge and check how strong the field was before accepting.

Otherwise a race like the Listed Darley Arabian over 1600m on the poly on Super Saturday could be an option.

Black Arthur has been accorded a 106 merit rating and Bela-Bela 107.

As things stand this would see them in the July with the minimum respective weights for three-year-olds of 53kg for a male and 52kg for a filly, although Black Arthur would officially be 2kg under sufferance and Bela-Bela 0,5kg under sufferance.

Snaith said a lot of thought would have to be put into planning their SA Champions season routes from here but added, “The main thing is they have both pulled up out of their races in fantastic shape.”

Abashiri (Nkosi Hlophe)

Will Abashiri run?

Public hero Abashiri is “getting better everyday” in the aftermath of his ultra tough SA Derby run, which saw him hard driven to win narrowly, thus becoming the third horse in history to land the SA Triple Crown.

However, trainer Mike Azzie said it was still too early to say whether the Go Deputy gelding would participate in the Vodacom Durban July.

He added, “If he gets topweight I don’t think he will run.”

A condition of the July is three-year-old males being limited at the publications of the weights to carry a maximum of 57kg.

However, if the current highest rated horse among the entries, Legal Eagle, is scratched after the publications of the weights, the weights will then be dragged upward.

In that case French Navy would be dragged up from 57,5kg to 60kg and Abashiri would go from 56,5kg up to 59kg, which would be the highest weight a three-year-old has ever been asked to carry in the July.

Azzie has a good back up horse in Gr 1-winner Rabada.

He felt this Brave Tin Soldier colt was unlucky in Friday night’s Gr 2 Canon Guineas. He pointed out Rabada had to be used up to find a handy position from a wide draw and the pace up front had then been a blistering one. He added Black Arthur had consequently had the run of the race coming from a good draw. Black Arthur was soon relaxed at the back on the rail and was able to stride out throughout, due to the fast pace. In fact he had to be scrubbed along by Anthony Delpech to keep up.

Azzie said, “He only beat us by half-a-length, but I think it could be a different story in the Daily News, provided we get a good draw.”

Azzie has a high regard for the four-year-old Black Minnaloushe gelding Greek Legend, who won a good race over 1600m at Turffontein in his second run after a layoff for a suspensory injury, prevailing over the previously unbeaten Chepardo. He added Greek Legend had been doing “very, very well” at Summerveld. He has drawn well in seven among the long list of Gr 2 Betting World 1900 nominations, although off just a 91 merit rating it remains to be seen whether he will get into the race or not.

Azzie will aim former SA Derby runner up and Supreme Cup winner Deputy Jud at the Gr 3 Track And Ball Derby at Scottsville on June 19. He said his last run could have a line drawn through it, because this horse needed cover to be affective.

He reckoned his sprinter Splendid Garden, who finished a fine fifth in the Gr 1 WSB Computafirm Sprint considering he jumped from an unfavourable low draw, would be in the “shake up” in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint at Scottsville on June 4 and added he would appreciate the step up to 1200m.

Azzie also has three nice two-year-old campaigners in colts Rivarine and Aussie Austin and filly Announcing Rain.

Meanwhile, Shatoosh, who finished 7,25 lengths back in the Gr 2 Daisy Guineas on Friday night will be put away until next season as Azzie believes time given for her to mature will be beneficial.

Schwarz rides first winner

Apprentice Dennis Schwarz is one of the hardest working riders from the South African Jockeys Academy and it paid dividends today at Scottsville as he landed his first win in his 14th career race ride aboard the  Gavin van Zyl-trained Cronological.

Assistant trainer Gareth van Zyl kept Schwarz aboard at the request of owner Brian Burnard and the horse won the Maiden for fillies and mares over 1000m comfortably after showing pace throughout.

Schwarz hails from Gauteng and is in Grade 11.

Sky Grand Prix comes to Greyville

There will be exhilarating high-speed action at and above Greyville Racecourse in Durban on Saturday, May 28, with aerobatic aircraft tumbling, twisting and flashing across the heavens prior to the start of one of the country’s iconic racemeetings featuring the R2-million, Grade 1 Daily News 2000 and the R1-million, Grade 1 Woolavington 2000.

Gold Circle, the South African Aerobatic Club and the Daily News are collaborating in the two presentations with the Sky Grand Prix of Aerobatics taking place over the grassy expanse of the Royal Durban Golf Course during the morning and the horseracing getting underway in the afternoon.

Greyville Racecourse will be the perfect vantage point to view the aerobatic manoeuvres performed by five world class South African and five leading international pilots from 9am on the day with the gates to the course opening an hour earlier.  The live expert commentary and big screen coverage of the Sky Grand Prix will be unique to those attending the event at Greyville Racecourse.

Entrance tickets to Greyville for the air show, at a cost of R220 per person and R50 for children under 12, can be obtained through Computicket.

The public attending both events should note, however, that due to the health and safety regulations related to air shows, there will be no parking at the Greyville in-field area and certain roads around the area will be closed.

However, from 13:00 entrance to Greyville for the Daily News 2000 racemeeting will be FREE and the main action will be on the racetrack where the focus will be on the many horses fighting to establish their authority as the best three-year-olds in the country and to secure places in the 18-horse field to face the starter in the R4.25-million, Grade 1 Vodacom Durban July a few weeks later.

The classic three-year-old level weights race was first run in 1961 and came under the banner of The Daily News in 1987. With runners from all parts of South Africa it is rated as the ultimate test of the young horses and in its 55-year history seven winners of the event have gone on to win the Vodacom Durban July in the same year.

Daily News 2000 raceday is a highly entertaining meeting and one of the popular features at the Theatre of Champions, as it is now known, is the Galloping Gourmet Beer & Braai Festival next to the Braai Zone area at the course. The Festival will be in action throughout the day including during the aerobatic display, and will feature live music, food stalls offering a variety of casual dishes, and popular brews. The popular Kids Zone will not be in operation on the day.

The Daily News is also running a fabulous competition for the public that offers a two night stay for four people, inclusive of breakfast, worth R64 000 in the magnificent Penthouse Suite at the Fairmont Zimbali Resort.

The Sky Grand Prix of Aerobatics will have viewers searching the skies but when the racetrack action begins they will be brought back to ground for some of the most exciting thoroughbred racing they will ever see.

Silver Mountain (Liesl King)

Mountain run a mystery

Jockey Bernard Fayd’herbe said WSB Cape Guineas winner Silver Mountain “didn’t raise a gallop” in the Gr 2 Daisy Guineas on Friday night.

His brother Robert, who is taking care of Mike Bass’s SA Champions Season string at Summerveld, has also been left mystified as the star filly has pulled up 100% fine.

Silver Mountain (Liesl King)

Silver Mountain (Liesl King)

The diminutive Silvano filly lacked her normal zip and might not have enjoyed the going on the night, which appeared to be soft.

She finished a 5,5 length fifth having turned for home perfectly placed to pounce from a midfield position on the rail.

The stablemate from the Mike Bass yard Nightingale ran a cracker to finish second and will relish the extra trip of the Gr 1 Woolavington 2000.

Bernard was also aboard a fancied disappointment in the Gr 2 Canon Guineas, the Justin Snaith-trained Baritone, who was moving up well before running out of steam.

However, he reported to the stipendiary stewards the colt had “choked up in the latter stages.”

Meanwhile, some anomalies have already surfaced out of the new handicapping guidelines, which the handicappers had forced upon them despite being strongly opposed to some of the new restrictive measures.

For example, Nightingale could only be raised to a 92 merit rating due to the rule a Gr 2 runner up can only be raised a maximum of five points.

This means she would receive 3kg from Daisy Guineas fourth-placed Flying Ice in a handicap, despite having beaten her on Friday night by 3,5 lengths.

Another example is the Joey Soma-trained Fortissima, who is currently merit rated 82, despite having finished second in the Gr 2 R1 million SA Oaks.

rock on baby nh

Rock On Baby has talent

Trainer and jockey comments for Scottsville today

Dennis Drier is expecting a good run from Rock On Baby (4th race), a talented sprinter who was found to be coughing after her disappointing last start in the Gr 2 WSB Southern Cross Stakes over 1000m at Kenilworth five months ago.

Drier has won five of the last six runnings of the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion and the public are still waiting for his contender for this year’s renewal, so all eyes will be on Seventh Rock colt Rocky Valley in the first over 1000m. Drier said, “He should run a nice race.” He is out of the fair sprinter by Mogok, Valley Of Rubies, who finished runner up in the Gr 3 Sycamore Sprint. He is owned by Markus Jooste, whose retained rider Anton Marcus will however be aboard the Charles Laird-trained Buffalo Soldier, who is by Warm White Night out of a USA-bred dam who hasn’t produced much to date. However, Laird has a fine record with first-timers so the betting should be watched closely.

Drier said the first-timer Anime in the second race would probably need the run. However, she is well bred being by Count Dubois out of Gr 2 KZN Guineas winner Rei Rei, so can’t be discounted.

Drier said it is about time Lighting The Fire, who runs in the fifth race over 1400m, “lit his fire” and he at least seems to be back down to a competitive merit rating and is over a suitable trip so can’t be ignored.

Warren Kennedy spoke on behalf of the Gavin Van Zyl yard and said, “Qatar Springs (7th over 2400m) is doing very well and has beaten all of these horses before. He stays well and should win.

Bagger Vance (5th) is one of my better rides on the day, he has the weight turnaround with Never Settle and should be there.

Northern Storm ran a cracker on debut. There was a lot of talk about Rebel Rose on debut (the Wendy Whitehead-trained filly duly finished second to an odds on shot) and she could be the one to beat, but if you go on times Northern Storm is ahead of her. It’s a difficult race and there are a lot of first-timers too but Northern Storm should be in the first three.

Cronological (3rd race) made a decent comeback but what you see is what you get, she is a struggler. Hello Mah also runs here but the 1000m is too short for her.

Lil Red a Rooster (1st race) has to improve.

Captain At Sea (8th) is a smart colt, but is drawn high on debut. It’s a weak field though and he has a quartet chance.”

Dennis Bosch was bullish about Lavender Bank and gave all his other runners chances too.

He said, “Lavender Bank will run a good race (3rd race – Anton Marcus retains the ride after she was backed to 9/20 on debut but ran green around the turn on the poly, although she still ran an eyecatching race to finish a staying on 1,3 length fourth).”

Bosch continued, “Regardstobroadway (4th) has always been talented but wasn’t being ridden correctly and is now being ridden the right way.”

He said Your Worship (7th) was also not given a good ride last time. However, the blinkers are back on and Delpech is aboard so he expected a decent run.

Bosch also expected a decent run from the sprinter Shezaleader (4th) too and this filly certainly loves the Scottsville straight.
