Warren Kennedy

Jockey of the Month – April 2017

Warren Kennedy

The wheel of fortune is constantly turning and Warren’s change of fortune in recent time is testimony to that. In times past when many of the top riders that have moved on were still plying their trade in this country, the talent that Warren had was not appreciated and he did not get the opportunities he deserved.

But things have changed and his services have been utilized by a number of stables with success and he is earning the rewards.

During the month he booted home 11 winners with 23 of his other mounts finding places at a win rate of 20% and win-place statistics of 61.82%, the latter only bettered understandably by Anthony Delpech and Anton Marcus.

Well done and well deserved Warren

Gavin Van Zyl

Trainer of the Month – April 2017

Gavin Van Zyl

If dedication, enthusiasm and innovation are the requirements for success in life then Gavin has shown he has plenty of all three and together with sons Chesney and Gareth has formed a very effective training establishment operating in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

After a relatively quiet period the stable is again beginning to flex its muscles and did well for its supporters during the month with eight winners and nine other placed runners returning a win-place percentage of 51.52 and an outright win rate of 24.24%.

With the big season now in full swing one could expect further successes for the stable.

Well done Gavin

Africa Rising (Nkosi Hlophe)

‘Force’ to be reckoned with

Royal Air Force gelding Copper Force could land the Gr 2 Daisy Guineas on the SA Champions Season opening day at Greyville on Sunday.

One clue which points to him is the booking of Anthony Delpech at the expense of his Justin Snaith-trained stablemate Zodiac Ruler as well as the Dean Kannemeyer-trained Summer Sky.

Africa Rising (Nkosi Hlophe)

Africa Rising (Nkosi Hlophe)

Copper Force needed his KZN debut in the Gr 3 Byerley Turk over 1400m where he finished a 0,75 length second to the Visionaire colt Africa Rising. The latter pair are drawn well again, but Copper Force could reverse the form, considering he should have come on plenty for that run and he also beat Africa Rising by 3,9 lengths over this trip in the CTS Mile when finishing runner up.

Africa Rising has a fine turn of foot, but this race will be the acid test to prove whether he is as affective over 1600m as he is over 1400m.

Zodiac Ruler, winner of the Gr 2 Golden Horseshoe and runner up in the Gr 1 Investec Cape Derby, had his first run as a gelding recently over 1400m and was unable to catch Horizon. However, he went down by just a head, and will relish the step up in trip. He has a good draw of five and world class jockey Richard Fourie is aboard.

Horizon should also appreciate the step up in trip as the winner of the Gr 3 Politician Stakes over 1800m. He has a fine turn of foot and is suited to Greyville, as one would expect of a son of Dynasty out of a full-sister to Silvano.

Summer Sky had his first run as a gelding in a handicap against older horses at Scottsville over 1400m and quickened exceptionally well to win by five lengths. He was racing off just an 82 merit rating, but looked the part and a Listed winner has come out of the form. He is drawn in two and Gavin Lerena is aboard is another bonus.

Janoobi has the ideal pole position from which to attempt a repeat of his start to finish win of the Gr 2 Gauteng Guineas. Master of pace judgement Piere Strydom will give him a good chance of doing so.

Horizon (Liesl King)

Horizon (Liesl King)

Matador Man has class and couples a relaxed running style with a fine turn of foot, so should enjoy Greyville. A wide draw is not of much concern as he usually loses a length or two at the start.

Gunner won the Gr 1 Premier’s Champion Stakes over course and distance, when showing a fine turn of foot, but on this season’s form has plenty to find with a few of these.

Secret Captain is merit rated only 84 and has to prove he enjoys this trip. However, he is a dark horse as a well regarded sort who might not have showed his best yet.

Gimme The Stars has won his last four in PE including an easy win in the Listed East Cape Guineas when making up five lengths in the final 200m and winning easily. However, this will be tougher.

Gingerbread Man has won five of his last eight starts, but his last six starts have been on the poly where the standard is generally a touch weaker.

Mess ran above his 70 merit rating when second is a Graduation Plate over this trip last time, but still needs a considerable step up.

Final Judgement (Nkosi Hlophe)

Final Judgement to deliver

Judpot filly Final Judgement could land her second Grade 2 at Greyville on Sunday in the Gr 2 Daisy Fillies Guineas from a good draw of six.

The Gr 2 Golden Slipper winner showed a fine turn of foot from a handy position to hit the front last time out in the Gr 3 Umzimkhulu Stakes over 1400m. She finished a 0,75 length second but will now be 2kg better off with the winner Gimme Six. The one concern is the 1600m trip and it all depends on how well she settles as she tugged at the bit early on when finishing a 1,95 length fourth in the Gr 1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes over 1600m.

Final Judgement (Nkosi Hlophe)

Final Judgement (Nkosi Hlophe)

Gimme Six was quite forward when running on strongly in the Umzimkhulu after being dropped out early from a wide draw. She has another tricky draw, but being by Gimmethegreenlight should still be improving.

Philanthropist filly Sail has always struck as one who could get better as she matured, so was a touch disappointing when once again finding two too good for her in the Umzimkhulu. However, she will now be 2kg better off with Gimme Six for a 1,25 length beating and she does have another good draw of two.

Her stablemate The High Life gave the winner 4kg in the Umzimkhulu and finished fastest of all for a 3,75 length sixth. She will relish the step up in trip, although she would ideally prefer even further and has another wide draw. Dennis Drier’s stable jockey Sean Veale sticks with Sail and Ian Sturgeon retains the ride on The High Life.

Trippi filly Dawn Calling has always been highly regarded and should have come on plenty from her 2,75 length fourth in the Umzimkhulu. She showed she needed that run by being a little bit keen early after being dropped out from a wide draw. Unfortunately, she has drawn wide again and she will also be 2kg worse off with Final Judgement and Sail and 4kg worse off with The High Life.

Her stablemate, the Var filly A Women’s Way, was having her first run beyond 1200m in the Umzimkhulu and after being dropped out to last from the widest draw of all she ran on well for a 3,5 length fifth, giving the winner 2kg. She relaxed well in the running, suggesting she will get the mile, and Piere Strydom now rides from pole position.

Sail (Nkosi Hlophe)

Sail (Nkosi Hlophe)

Lady Of The House ran on well for fifth in the Cape Fillies Guineas, beaten a short-head by Sail, but then over raced last time out in the Majorca Stakes with blinkers on. The blinkers are duly off, so she should be running on well again and being by Dynasty should be improving all the time.

Ektifaa is the highest merit rated horse in the field on 103, but there is a stamina doubt. She went up handy from a wide draw in the Gr 2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas and was only found out in the final 100-150m, so she can’t be written off over this easier 1600m.

Captain Al filly Al Danza improved when stepped up to 1450m in a Graduation Plate last time and led from start to finish to beat Visuality. She has a fair draw but this is a big step up in class.

Visuality has been disappointing this season and would be a surprise winner.

Philae is the lowest merit rated contender. However, she moved up well in the Gr 1 SA Fillies Classic over 1800m last time out before becoming a bit cramped, so was far from disgraced in finishing a 5,85 length ninth. She should be improving all the time being by Silvano and, over what should be an ideal trip, has a plum draw.

Legal Eagle (Liesl King)

Legal Eagle looking good

Derek Brugman, racing manager of Mayfair Speculators, said their Sean Tarry-trained Equus Horse Of The Year Legal Eagle had been “doing fine and his work had been good” ahead of this Saturday’s Gr 1 R4 million Premier’s Champions Challenge over 2000m on Turffontein Standside.

Legal Eagle (Liesl King)

Legal Eagle (Liesl King)

Legal Eagle will attempt to become the first South African horse for 50 years to successfully defend three Gr 1 crowns in one season. The immortal Sea Cottage was the last horse to achieve this feat in 1967. Legal Eagle has already defended his L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes crowns.

Legal Eagle is merit rated 123, which is 10 points higher than the second highest rated horse in the race, his stablemate French Navy, who finished runner up to him last year.

Of the opposition the Mike de Kock-trained three-year-old filly Nother Russia is the most unexposed. This is a big step up, but she improves every time she races and was an impressive winner of the Gr 1 Empress Club Stakes over 1600m last time out. She should get the trip on pedigree, being the daughter of the twice J&B Met runner up Mother Russia.

Mayfair Speculators Deo Juvente looks to have enjoyed a good preparation and both he and dual Gr 1 Sansui Summer Cup winner Master Sabina carry the never to be under-estimated Geoff Woodruff factor.

Mayfair Speculators have the Tarry-trained Trip To Heaven and the Joey Ramsden-trained Brutal Force in the Gr 1 Computaform Sprint over 1000m. Their retained jockey Anton Marcus has chosen to ride Trip To Heaven and Piere Strydom will be aboard Brutal Force.

French Navy (Nkosi Hlophe)

French Navy (Nkosi Hlophe)

Brugman said, “Trip To Heaven is not the easiest to keep sound, but Sean knows him well and what to do. If he is sound and jumps on terms he is the horse to beat. Brutal Force has tightened up after his last win, which was his third run after a lengthy break, and will be spot on.”

Trip To Heaven put up an incredible display in the Gr 1 Betting World Cape Flying Championship over 1000m last time out when losing a number of lengths at the start and only just failing to catch his stablemate Carry On Alice. Brutal Force has won his last two starts, including over the Computaform course and distance last time out. His unplaced run in the Cape Flying followed a year’s layoff.

High draws are often favourable in the Computaform Sprint and in that case Brutal Force’s draw of four could be a concern. Trip To Heaven usually starts slowly so can be dropped out from his draw of seven before producing his devastating turn of foot.

Brugman is expecting a good run in the Gr 2 SA Oaks from the Joe Soma-trained Silvano filly Wind Chill.

He said, “I thought she was a bit unlucky when runner up in the Oaks Trial as she raced three wide. We are expecting a very good run. It is a step up in class and trip but we think she will get the trip.”

Deo Juvente (Nkosi Hlophe)

Deo Juvente (Sporting Post)

Brugman’s one slight concern for their runners on Saturday was the Equine Herpes virus which had been doing the rounds on the Highveld, especially as affected horses had generally not been showing signs of the virus until after their races.

“Our form on the Highveld has been a bit hit and miss,” he admitted.

Brugman also spoke about Mayfair Speculators’ SA Champions Season campaign. He said the plans for their KZN string were still “fluid” and horses would be placed according to well-being, merit rating and track suitability.

The Ramsden-trained Attenborough has been in KZN for a while and impressed on Sunday in his first run as a gelding when swooping from off the pace to win the Listed In Full Flight Handicap over 1100m.

“We always thought gelding was what he needed,” said Brugman. However, he said the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint was not necessarily on his agenda as Mayfair Speculators had many other possible candidates for the race and it would all depend on the handicappers assessment of their recent performances, their well-being and their suitability to the predicted track condition.

Carry On Alice (Nkosi Hlophe)

Carry On Alice (Nkosi Hlophe)

Other horses he mentioned as possible Tsogo Sun contenders were Excelero, Night Trip and Elusive Path (3rd, 8th and 11th in the In Full Flight), Graduation Day (whose soundness issues have seen him have only nine starts despite being a six-year-old) and Seventh Plain (a Scottsville Gr 1 winner who caught the eye in his last start). He said another of their Scottsville Gr 1 winner, Guinness, was unlikely to run in the Tsogo Sun as they considered him a 1000m horse these days.

Mayfair Speculators have a phenomenal record in Scottsville Gr 1s.

Brugman explained Table Bay and Just Sensual’s surprise scratchings from Sunday’s Gr 2 Daisy Guineas and Daisy Fillies Guineas respectively. “They had good spells on the farm after the Cape Summer and the Guineas meeting came too soon as we did not want to start them fresh in a mile. We will bring them back over shorter, but there are no firm plans. They are galloping this week and we will see how they go in their races before deciding their routes.”

Meanwhile, the Gr 1 Investec Cape Derby winner Edict Of Nantes suffered a “small niggle” after arriving at Summerveld, which was why he would be missing Sunday’s Guineas meeting. Brugman said the Gr 1 Daily News 2000 would now be the target, but if that did not work out they could bring him back to a mile later (he was a narrow runner up in Gr 2 Selangor Cup over 1600m).

Greg Cheyne (Nkosi Hlophe)

Ramsden on the hunt again

Joey Ramsden will be two-handed in his bid to win the Somerset 1200 for the fifth successive year at Kenilworth on Saturday.

Greg Cheyne (Nkosi Hlophe)

Greg Cheyne (Nkosi Hlophe)

Ramsden, who has won the two-year-old Listed race with horses of the calibre of Red Ray in the past, runs both last month’s first time out maiden winner Morning Catch (Donovan Dillon) and Speedpoint (Grant van Niekerk) who followed up his win in March by running Dutch Philip to half a length in a winners’ race in the middle of last month and will now be 2kg better.

Dutch Philip (Aldo Domeyer) has to give weight all round and as much as 4kg to the three maidens in the race. These include Greg Cheyne’s mount Kasimir who represents Snaith Racing whose most recent Somerset success came with the subsequent L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Gimmethegreenlight in 2011.

Jonathan Snaith said: “Kasimir has been second twice and we are looking for a good run. He has a good chance at the weights.”

The Philippi stable’s Angel’s Trumpet is the only non-winner among the eight declared for the fillies equivalent, the Perfect Promise Sprint, and Bernard Fayd’Herbe rides. He won last year’s race on The Merry Widow for the Snaiths as well as the 2012 running on Hammie’s Hooker.

Rainbowinthesky (Nkosi Hlophe)

Rainbowinthesky if you’re patient

Punters will need to dig deep into their formbooks and do some serious studying for today’s meeting at Scottsville as they are faced with a loaded card of mostly maximum fields. However, the pickings will be profitable if they can find correct combinations.

The White Horse Function Room Handicap is a sample of what they are up against being a competitive handicap. Dante’s Legacy was a beaten favourite last run and Gavin van Zyl’s charge is having his fourth run after a lengthy break. He has raced handy in both of his last two starts before coming up short under pressure but the extra distance and a good draw should see him in the firing line.

Rainbowinthesky (Nkosi Hlophe)

Rainbowinthesky (Nkosi Hlophe)

Gareth van Zyl saddles the Australian-bred Handsome Harvey for the first time. The colt shed his maiden for Mike Azzie at Turffontein and had shown steady improvement leading up to that win. He has the worst of the draw but looks progressive.

Terabyte has his third run after a lay-off and gelding but still gave his rider a tough time last time out as he proved a touch headstrong. He races with a tongue-tie for the first time and that could make all the difference.

Crystal Ball takes on males for the first time but there was a lot to like about the way she finished off her latest start. She made up many lengths in the straight and with that run under her girth she cannot be written off lightly.

In the Rockafellas Restaurant Handicap, Cuvara made good improvement to win at his second start and looks progressive. Tony Rivalland’s yard has come good over the past few weeks and it generally pays to follow form stables. Talking of form stables, Paul Lafferty has been lining them up in recent weeks along with apprentice Ashton Arries who is back from suspension. They team up with top weight Dark Moon Rising who won well on debut beating the luckless but subsequent winner Indian Tractor. Of the balance, Rock Of Africa has some fair form to stronger in the Cape and can make the step up.

The final race on the card is a tough Fillies and Mare Handicap but Rainbowinthesky has shown up well in two starts against stronger since shedding her maiden. An outside draw down the Scottsville straight does not appear to be an issue any longer so gate 16 should not be a disadvantage.

Russian Girl has been holding form and looks a live danger to the selection while Silk Trip was deemed good enough to try a trip to the Highveld and can improve on her last effort.

A possibly exotic bet banker may come in the form of Silent Obsession in the Racing It’s A Rush Maiden Plate. The gelding only has one eye but has come to hand after making major improvement at his last start. He was an expensive yearling buy and is a smart looking individual.  The filly Enticer looks his main threat and although she takes on males she has smart form over shorter. If she stays the trip she will be competitive.

On The Bounce will have many supporters in the card opener after finishing a useful third against winners last time out. That form has since been franked with second-placed Neptune’s Rain winning the Gr3 Strelitiza Stakes at her subsequent outing.

Both On The Bounce and Swift Dancer have had both their starts in soft ground and there was a length between the two when they met for the first time. There is unlikely to be much between them again today and drawn alongside each other should make for an interesting tussle. However, there are plenty of unraced fillies in the line-up and the betting may prove a better guide.

Marinaresco (Nkosi Hlophe)

Marinaresco in good shape

Marinaresco, second in last year’s Vodacom Durban July and second favourite this time, is reported in good heart for his reappearance in the Independent on Saturday Drill Hall Stakes although Candice Bass-Robinson points out that Sunday’s Greyville feature is very much a stepping-stone.

Marinaresco (Nkosi Hlophe)

Marinaresco (Nkosi Hlophe)

She said: “Marinaresco is doing quite nicely and he doesn’t need a huge amount of work but the 1 400m is a bit short for him and this is a prep for the Rising Sun Gold Challenge.”

Bernard Fayd’Herbe rides the four-year-old for the first time while Richard Fourie has been booked for Sail South, one of two high profile runners for Brett Crawford.

Crawford said: “Sail South is very effective over the trip but he has a bad draw. However he loves Greyville, he has been very competitive there. He is rated 114, well weighted and well in.

“You have got to respect both him and Captain America (Corne Orffer) who is in very good form at the moment. He has been on the grass twice and has tightened up nicely.”

Horizon, slashed from 20-1 to 12-1 joint third favourite for the July after his head defeat of Cape Derby runner-up Zodiac Ruler in a 1 400m allowance plate at Greyville nine days ago, will renew rivalry with the Snaith horse in Sunday’s Daisy Guineas. Mrs Robinson then intends going for the Daily News.

Fayd’Herbe is back in full swing after his Dubai stint and his punishing weight-reducing routine, involving running at least ten kilometres a day, proved to have spin-off benefits last week when his circuits of Kenilworth enabled him to spot that the ground on the stands side was faster. He steered widest of all on African Night Sky last Saturday to land his third (Highlands Stud) Winter Guineas and the 10-1 chance has been pencilled in for an ambitious target.

Sail South (Liesl King)

Sail South (Liesl King)

Jonathan Snaith said: “He will now go for the other two legs of the Winter Series and next year he might run in the Sun Met.”

Turbulent Air, the 7-2 favourite, could finish no closer than fifth and, although Anton Marcus reported that the gelding did not stride out freely, the course vet could find nothing wrong.

Whose That Girl, who led over a furlong out under Domeyer in the Sweet Chestnut, will go in search of the R150 000 Winter Series bonus in the Stormsvlei Mile (May 21) and the Winter Oaks (June 24) but Mrs Robinson will adopt a new approach with stable companion Silver Mountain who managed only a disappointing fourth of five behind South Side in the 1 000m conditions plate.

The Milnerton trainer said: “This was way too short for her and the track is running very fast. It was a prep for the Tibouchina but she is not quite reproducing what she did as a three-year-old. Maybe she wants further and that is what we are going to look at.”

African Night Sky (Liesl King)

‘Mate’ on the up

Our Mate Art can finally start realising his potential by winning the Highlands Stud Winter Guineas at Kenilworth tomorrow.

The highly regarded Australian-bred missed the rest of the Cape season after chipping a splint bone in the Selangor but returned after a 19 week lay-off to take second in a Pinnacle at the beginning of the month only to be seemingly stymied by a bad draw here.

But that all changed on Wednesday afternoon when Bernard Fayd’Herbe, as so often in the past, was first to spot that the ground on the stands side had become faster and he came home alone on the winner. In the next race they all swung wide at the turn.

African Night Sky (Liesl King)

African Night Sky (Liesl King)

If – as seems probable – conditions are much the same tomorrow Aldo Domeyer, successful on Marinaresco 12 months ago, won’t need a Marcus-type flying start to get into a decent position.

He could have most to fear from Elevated who is going to be a good price. He comes from one of the smaller yards and his recent form is positively discouraging. But he was a sick horse after the Derby and patently not ready last time. Nothing else here can match his fourth in the Cape Guineas.

“He is the best horse in the race,” says Riaan van Reenen, “and, while he is not 100%, he is very close to it – maybe 95 or 96% – and that could be enough.”

Newlands is best on ratings and Joey Ramsden is bidding for his third Winter Guineas in six seasons. The gelding has some useful form but not useful enough to jump out at you as the likely winner and the owner’s retained rider Anton Marcus is on Turbulent Air instead.

Marcus has won three of the last five Winter Guineas and his strike rate at Kenilworth this season is a barely credible 37%. In other words he has almost two winners from every five rides. Dare I say it, though, Turbulent Air looks more like one of the statistical three losers.

True, he was running for the first time for four months when only just behind Our Mate Art (who was giving 1.5kg) in the April 1 Pinnacle but he had been well beaten in races like the Langerman and the Cape Classic.

Stable companion African Night Sky has always looked a good horse in the making and, if that Pinnacle form is correct, he could get into the shake-up.

Piere Strydom is a high-profile booking for I Travel Light who finished a length in front of African Night Sky in the CTS Mile but was well beaten in the Cape Guineas. Victory for any of the other eight – Loadshedder included – would be a shock of seismic proportions.

Who will head the market is as difficult to predict as the winner but it’s important because the favourite has won five of the last six runnings. As regards the rest of the card, Fresnaye and Silver Mountain are stand-outs.
