Abelie (Candiese Marnewick)

Snorting Bull can stay on well

The Turffontein Standside course stages a typically competitive new season nine-race meeting tomorrow although there are some opportunities for punters.

Abelie (Candiese Marnewick)
Abelie (Candiese Marnewick)

In the seventh race, a Pinnacle Stakes event over 2400m, Snorting Bull is 2,5kg under sufferance with the best weighted Pilgrim’s Progress, but he looks to have promise as a stayer. He is a big horse with a good turn of foot and he showed last time he can stay on resolutely too, so he should relish the galloping course and distance. The Marchfield filly Factor Fifty is 1,5kg under sufferance with Pilgrim’s Progress but beat Snorting Bull by 1,75 lengths in her penultimate start. The latter likely needed it then and is also 3,5kg better off so should reverse the form, but Factor Fifty does strike as one who has promise as a stayer and she should now be coming into her own. Dromedaris is the best weighted male in the race according to official merit ratings and has been in fair form. None of the first three selected have good draws so others will have to be considered for the exotics.

In the fifth race My Dream Chaser looks to have promise and should be coming into her own. She was beaten 1,75 lengths by Saints Alive over course and distance in April but now has a plum draw and is 1,5kg better off in the weights so has a chance of reversing form, although she is returning from a 112 day absence. Her stablemate Abelie strikes as a progressive sort and should make a bold bid with Muzi Yeni up. She comes off a win over this trip on the Greyville poly under Yeni. Jamra is capable of a resolute finish from a handy or front-running position. Her best career run was over this course and distance and it was from a similarly wide draw to the one she has here.

In the second race over 1000m Royal Cavalier is held in good regard so it has been surprising he has not really come to the party when having easier tasks in handicaps. However, he has now dropped to a lowly mark and is drawn favourably high so could get it right. Mount Keith has the standside draw and was not disgraced last time in a Pinnacle event over course and distance behind the useful Prince Of Kahal. Lithuanian’s Dream has to be considered too as he showed what he was capable of in his penultimate start when blitzing the field.

In the sixth race Big Myth is an effective front-runner and with bottom weight. In a small field she should be able to dictate. On the downside she would prefer a touch further but she should make a bold bid. The Sash won her only start over this course and distance but has to bounce back from two below par runs over 1400m and 1450m respectively. Wordyness disappointed as the even money favourite last time over 1800m but might enjoy this trip as she did over race in her penultimate start over 2000m. None of the first three choices are well drawn, so it is a tricky race.

In the third race over 1160m Intothemystic showed plenty of zip on debut and was squeezed out in the latter stages so would have got closer. He should be improving being by Duke Of Marmalade and should go close. The first-timers who makes most appeal are Marshall, a Vercingetorix colt out of an unplaced Not For Sale mare who has produced a twice winner by Vercingetorix’s father Silvano, and Captain Hindsight, a Captain Of All gelding out of Listed-winning sprinter Uber Rock, who has produced a Listed-winning speedster and a Listed-placed sprinter.

The meeting starts with a tricky Workrider’s Maiden over 1000m and there is little between Flower Of Scotland, Bridesmaid Blues and Set And Match. However, the Roy Magner yard have been in good form so Flower Of Scotland is given the vote.     By David Thiselton

Adam Marcus (hamishNIVENphotography)

Punters can land a Marcus double

Adam Marcus can put punters in profit at Kenilworth tomorrow by landing a double with Missisippi Burning and Hello Winter Hello.

Missisippi Burning beat everything except all-the-way scorer Calypso Beat ,despite being drawn wide, in a 14-runner maiden three weeks ago and should have few problems confirming the placings with This Ones For Tony who lost ground at the start and was over six lengths back. Greg Cheyne, who rode the winner that day and is in brilliant form, takes over on the selection.

Adam Marcus (hamishNIVENphotography)
Adam Marcus (hamishNIVENphotography)

The Marcus runner is favourite for the Bellryck Financial Group Maiden at around 14-10 but money has come for the superbly bred Justin Snaith newcomer Sovereign Secret. This Dynasty filly is the second foal of All Is Secret, winner of the Allan Robertson, Thekwini and Mercury Sprint and was bought for R1 million at last year’s CTS Cape Premier. Despite the stamina influence of her sire, Richard Fourie’ mount should have speed to burn.

However, as has been mentioned in this column before, it can pay to bet against Snaith first timers because he always puts the horse’s long term future first. That said, it is significant that Richard Fourie rides her rather than stable companion Queen of Quiet who, although last in the Kenilworth Fillies Nursery, has a big chance on the form of her neck debut second.

Hello Winter Hello is 2-1 favourite for the Carnarvon Lodge Maiden and that looks a reasonable price. M.J. Byleveld’s mount was a promising fourth to the well-regarded Sailing Ship on debut last month and is bound to have come on from that.

Watch Me Now, 7-2 second favourite here, was second in a work riders’ race that day but that was a much weaker race and she looks unlikely to beat the Marcus runner.

Evening Song (9-2) has losses to recover after finishing with only two behind her  when hot favourite here last time; the veterinary examination ordered by the stipes showed up nothing and here she is drawn widest of all and on what has proved to be the slower ground since the rains came.

Possibility (15-2) could be just that. She showed promise in a winners’ race on debut and started slowly. Callan Murray’s mount Mountain Ridge has been nibbled at – the Glen Kotzen newcomer is by Querari out of a Fort Wood mare.

Only One Like You, fourth in a fairly modest-looking maiden on debut, may be better than the bare form would suggest as he lost a front shoe during the race. He is taken to beat Lead Singer and Path Of Choice in the Goindustry Dovebid Maiden. Murray’s mount Doppio Oro has place prospects.

Richard Fourie (Liesl King)

Snaith/Fourie duo hold a strong hand

The Justin Snaith-Richard Fourie combination have a strong hand at Kenilworth on Saturday with the favourite or joint favourite in half the eight races while the dual champion trainer is responsible for a quarter or the total runners.

Adam Marcus, who runs only four horses on the day, sends out two favourites – Missisippi Burning (Greg Cheyne) in the Bellryck Financial Group Maiden and Hello Winter Hello (M.J. Byleveld) in the Carnarvon Lodge Maiden

Callan Murray is going to have to make the most of his considerable talents if he is to go home with a winner. None of his six mounts is less than 7-1 in the early betting and two of them are rank outsiders quoted at 25-1 and 30-1.

Ian Sturgeon (Nkosi Hlophe)

Sturgeon permanently booked off

Jockey Ian Sturgeon was booked off permanently from riding in April this year due to a hip problem but is already thriving in various business ventures.

Sturgeon was found to have a labrum tear as well as tears in the joint capsule and joint ligament.

Ian Sturgeon (Nkosi Hlophe)
Ian Sturgeon (Nkosi Hlophe)

He was operated on three times without success and still experiences some pain and discomfort just from walking around.

However, this has not stopped him playing golf at least once a week.

He and his girlfriend Clare Steele have started a pre-training centre in Hammarsdale.

They are building a new track and hope to increase their clientele, which to date has included Robbie and Shannon Hill and Kevin and Alyson Wright.

Sturgeon has also started a paving business whose headquarters will shortly be moving to Hillcrest.

During his jockey years he completed his qualifications in pest control and has taken over some of the business his father started in this industry.

He said, “It is a tough economic climate but, like jockeyship or anything else, if you have the right attitude you will be alright.”

Craig Zackey

Zackey eager to get back into the saddle

Top jockey Craig Zackey is out injured at present and will shortly be spending a week at South Africa’s champion stud farm, Mauritzfontein, where he hopes to be present to see his beloved Nother Russia foaling down.

Zackey had to have a double hip operation but the good news is this is not due to the hip wearing away, so he can still look forward to a long career.

He was found to have “massive cam lesions”. This refers to an abnormally shaped femoral head, which comes into abnormal contact with the edge of the hip socket, thus limiting the range of movement in the hip.

His femoral heads were duly shaved so they could sit in the sockets correctly.

Craig Zackey

However, it was subsequently discovered he had a labral tear in the cartilage of his right hip joint and had to have two pins inserted.

He had a bilateral hip arthroscopy on both hips and has been out for two weeks so far.

He expects to be out for at least another four weeks, although his comeback date will depend on the prognosis of the doctor.

Being on the sidelines has been particularly frustrating as he felt this season would have been the right one to “make a break and go for gold.” There are a number of jockeys on the sidelines and others have left for Hong Kong, so the national championship is there for the taking.

It is now going to be difficult, but his goal is still a top five finish.

The 24-year-old said, “I am still young so there will be a lot more opportunities. I have already ridden five Grade 1 winners and multiple Grade 2s and 3s, but the championship would be the cherry on the cake.”

Zackey’s five Grade 1 wins included two aboard Nother Russia and one each on Arabian Beat, Van Halen and Will Pays.

Nother Russia surpassed Slumdogmillionaire as the best he had ever ridden and he doubts there will ever be another horse closer to his heart.

He recounted, “She was temperamental and before she started racing nobody liked her, particularly as she was mad in the gates. I started working with Malan du Toit on her issues and something just told me to stick with her, so I was even prepared to go on Sundays to school her at the pens. When her owner and breeder Jessica Slack heard I had been working with her and showing her a lot of love she told me ‘This is your filly until the end of her career’ and there was no looking back after those inspiring words.”

The De Kock yard are also known for their loyalty to riders and Zackey duly rode her in all eighteen of her starts. She twice won the Grade 1 Empress Club Stakes over 1600m and also won the Grade 2 Ipi Tombe Stakes and the Grade 3 Acacia Handicap over that same Turffontein Standside course and distance. She ran four Grade 1 places too from 1600m to 2000m, three of them against the boys.

Nother Russia was the only foal of the late four-time Grade 1-winning stalwart Mother Russia. Zackey hopes to see the continuation of this legacy during his visit to Mauritzfontein as she is in foal to Querari and is due to foal down soon.

Zackey was a good soccer player at school. In Grade 7 he received an invitation to attend the Academy Of Excellence in Gauteng and at the age of 14 he was offered a trial at Orlando Pirates.

He was aware of horseracing as his father and late grandfather always followed the sport and it soon became evident he was always going to be small in stature.

When he went for an interview at Turffontein for the South African Jockeys Academy he learnt a lot about the sport and was now clear on what he wanted to do.

However, he did not realise just how focused he would be on this career path until arriving at The Academy.

“I loved every bit of it,” he said. “The Academy was like a dream come true.”

Zackey was the National Champion Apprentice in the 2014/2015 season, riding 58 winners.

He blossomed from there and broke through the 100 mark the following season, riding 101 winners.

The following season in 2016/2017 he rode 138 winners for sixth on the national log and that remains his best season to date.

However, before his injury he was being supported by the like of Adam and Basil Marcus in Cape Town, Duncan Howells, Dennis Drier, Wendy Whitehead and Doug Campbell in his new home base of KZN and some top yards in Gauteng, so he is itching to get back.

Dancing Feather (Candiese Lenferna)

Ninotto chase down his rivals

Young three-year-olds held sway over their older rivals at Hollywoodbets Greyville yesterday and won three of the first five races and were a touch unlucky in another.

The Dennis Drier-trained Piemonte Stud-bred three-year old Toreador gelding Ninotto looked the form choice in the opener, a Maiden over 1000m, and he chased down the well supported pair Valiente and Captain Of Colour to win by a cosy 1,40 lengths under Sean Veale. Vinodh’s Boy and Double Espresso ran on well for second and third respectively.

Garth Puller had a double on Sunday and added to this by winning yesterday’s second, a Graduation Plate for fillies and mares over 1000m, with the promising three-year-old Varsfontein-bred Gimmethegreenlight filly Travelling Light, who wore down older filly Candy Galore to win by 0,25 lengths under Sereno Moodley.

Dancing Feather (Candiese Marnewick)
Dancing Feather (Candiese Marnewick)

In the next, a fillies and mares Maiden over 1200m, three-year-old Hot Money had to switch way inward for a run so was perhaps a tad unlucky to be touched off by the Sean Tarry-trained four-year-old AL Adyaat home-bred Silvano filly Azeeza, who was ridden by Ashton Arries.

Eric Ngwane rode a fine front-running race to win the next over 1600m on the Dennis Bosch-trained four-year-old Highlands-bred Pathfork filly Jamie’s Joy.

However, the three-year-olds Dancing Feather and Royal Kitty dominated the finish of the fifth over 1600m. The former, a Gavin van Zyl-trained Maine Chance-bred Duke Of Marmalade filly won comfortably under Warren Kennedy.

Bosch scored a double when the four-year-old Summerhill-bred Visionaire gelding What A Blast stormed home under Stuart Randolph to take the sixth, a MR68 handicap over 1600m, despite carrying top weight first time out the maidens.

In the seventh over 2000m the Sabine Platter homebred five-year-old Lateral mare Everdene converted favoritism with a strong finish to just get up and put the Andre Nel-Gareth Wright combination on the board.

Apprentice Jabu Jacobs is improving all the while under Garth Puller’s tutelage and he used his 4kg claim to full effect in the last over 1400m on the Brett Crawford-trained Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein five-year-old Tiger Ridge mare Oloye. He led and had done his homework as the going in the straight was even on the day so he took the shortest way home down the inside rail and held on by a whisker from fast-finishing three-year-old Mary O.

Serendipity should be on the mark

The Vaal Classic track a stages nine race meeting tomorrow and it is a typically low key but competitive August card.

Punters could get off to a good start with the Sean Tarry-trained Therecanbeonlyone. This horse was outpaced in the finish over 2000m last time but stayed on and although just a young three-year-old looks to be crying out for the trip already. She has plenty of substance so should be improving all the time and being by Twice Over out of a Captain Al mare who won up to 1950m her pedigree also suggests she should get the trip. Weiho Marwing is an expert with stayers and the Lateral filly Laconia has earned a cheque in her last five starts over staying trips. She is starting to threaten a win and with top work rider Sam Mosia now aboard from pole position she will be a threat to Therecanbeonlyone, Shezahotti has had bad luck with draws and it continues here as she is drawn six out of six. She is bred for this trip being by SA Derby winner Irish Flame out of an Among Men mare who is out of a Rakeen mare and she could earn.

Ryan Munger
Ryan Munger

In the second race Serendipity can be forgiven her last start as she attained a speedy cut during the race. She is now drawn two over a favourable trip of 1500m and faces an uninspiring field so if recapturing her previous form off an effective two-point lower merit rating she is the one to beat. Passion Peach has been quite frustrating to follow over sprints as she finishes well but usually does it too late. She has failed in two attempts at this distance category but is by Ideal World so might be able to stay it now as a five-year-old. She has a fair draw with Muzi Yeni up. Empress Rock is never far off them and now has a 4kg claimer up so could also be in the shake-up.

In the third over 1200m both Brigtnumberten and Golden Lion will have to carry a fair amount of deadweight and therefore Pidgeon Rock is preferred. This four-year-old won well in the maidens last time over this 1200m trip and Dennis Schwarz stays aboard. His opening handicap mark looks manageable. Brigtnumberten has plenty of pace and has a fair draw. In the current fast conditions he can kick on. Golden Lion’s big weight of 63kg will be alleviated by the 4kg claimer of apprentice Syster. He won from a wide draw over the Turffontein Inside track over this trip in his penultimate start and is now drawn in pole off just an effective two-point higher mark, so will be a big threat.

In the fourth over 1600m Stop For Nothing is the form choice. He was four lengths back over 1400m last time and on pedigree should enjoy this step up in trip, although a concern is the breathing noise he made. The Riddler steps up from 1200m and should enjoy it on pedigree so can be involved from draw two. Tiki Taka has also shown signs of ability. However, this race could produce an upset as the first three choices don’t inspire confidence.

In the fifth over 1600m Smiley River moved up well on debut over 1400m after a slow start but did not find the necessary extra. She should improve and does not have a lot to beat. Readysetglo is usually thereabouts but is quite exposed. However, she is drawn in pole and should enjoy the step up to this trip being by Traffic Guard. The one who could upset the applecart is Anagram. She stayed on well over this course and distance last time from the same good draw of two and that was only her third start so she can improve.

In the sixth over 1600m Waqaas drops back to the course and distance of his best run and he is drawn in pole in an uninspiring field. Grindelwald has finished fourth in his last two starts over this trip and has been dropped a further three points so could get closer. Pelican Bay’s merit rating has been dropped another two points and he had excuses last time so could earn from a good draw.

In the seventh Perfect Light won well over this trip last time and off a lenient merit rating and jumping from pole she can follow up. Tombola has failed twice over middle distances before but having made a good start to her career in a Highveld yard she can be given another chance. This is particularly in light of her being by stamina influence Irish Flame and also the manner in which she won going away over 1600m last time. Destiny’s Game won well when stepped up to 1800m last time and looks likely to enjoy the further step up in trip, so she has a chance despite having to carry topweight off an effective six-point higher mark.

In the eighth over 1000m Before The Dawn starts off handicapping on a reasonable mark having won easily with first time blinkers on over this trip last time and with a 2,5kg claimer up could follow up. Phillydelphia is none too consistent but carrying a featherweight she could be in the shake up if producing her best, although she is 1,5kg worse off than she could be as she is half-a-kilogram under sufferance and the 4kg claimer Syster carries 1kg overweight. Queen Of War, Claremorris and Ottawa are also capable of winning this race.

In the last race over 1000m Mr Hugo has not been disgraced in two starts won by useful sorts. He has pace and can improve. Touch Of Fate has ability and can be involved if starting better than usual. Sunburst is having his 17th start but could earn here and Pure Wisdom and Anatolio can’t be ignored either.

Murray returns to Kenilworth

Callan Murray rides at Kenilworth for the first time since May last year on Saturday and he could well become a regular visitor to the two Cape Town courses.

The rising star, keen to re-establish himself after his stints in Hong Kong and Singapore, said yesterday: “I am very glad to be back at Kenilworth and, with the Cape season coming up, I would be willing to travel more often. It’s no secret that they are looking for jockeys there and I am hungry and willing.”

He rides in the last six of the eight races and has two mounts for both Glen Kotzen and Candice Bass-Robinson as well as one apiece for Piet Steyn and Geoff Woodruff.

Golden Chance (Candiese Marnewick)

Weights favour Golden Chance

Maidens and lowly handicaps make up most of the field’s country-wide in this time between feature seasons and punters have had to do plenty of homework to get through the exotic bets unscathed.

However, with only seven runners in the first leg of the PA on the poly at Hollywoodbets Greyville today, Golden Chance should oblige with at least a first-three finish. It is a competitive field for a Graduation Plate but Golden Chance ticks most of the boxes and if anywhere near her best should be difficult to beat.

If there is a chink in her armour, it could be that she may prefer it a touch further but to compensate, she is rated 5kg better than her nearest rival in the handicap ratings.

Golden Chance (Candiese Marnewick)
Golden Chance (Candiese Marnewick)

She is up against some useful opposition, best of which could be the Garth Puller-trained three-year-old Travelling Light. She was touched off over course and distance last time out and is progressive. Candy Galore comes from an inform stable while Wildly In Love has made dramatic improvement with a tongue-tie and is back on the poly where she has won before.

SA Derby winner Irish Flame has been responsible for more sprinters than stayers and sired a brace of winners last Sunday. Miss Charlotte should have a bright chance for giving him a third winner within a week when she lines up in the opening leg of the Pick 6.

It’s not an easy race but Puller has been firing of late and Miss Charlotte took a bad knock in her last race losing momentum when it mattered. Hot Money caught the eye on debut and should come on for the experience while Cersei galloped well at Ashburton last week and is in good order.

Paul Gadsby has signed up Warren Kennedy for the ride on La Duchesse in the fourth and her consistency should be rewarded. She goes well over course and distance and has the best of the draw.

If there is to be an upset it could come in the form of Camelots Beauty. Paul Lafferty’s runner is showing signs of coming to hand and with apprentice Jabu Jacobs, successful on Boeing City last Sunday, taking 4kg off her back she could surprise.

Dancing Feather caught the eye on debut and should make further improvement in the fifth although Royal Kitty and Miss Missouri have also shown up well at recent outings.

The sixth is a wide open affair but Such A Rush can put one over her male rivals. She was narrowly beaten in her last two starts over course and distance and the stable is in form. Of the others, Sovereign Soldier has shown up well at his last two and should feature prominently along with Northern Route who came back well after a lengthy break. Second run after a lay-off may be a problem.

Purple And Gold is likely to be among the longer priced runner in the eighth but there was plenty of money for Julie Dittmer’s runner last time out and she was a touch unlucky to find traffic on the turn, losing position. She finished with a rattle and was just over a length back to the winner Thru’ The Trees who she meets on 1kg better terms today. The dangers are many, including Thru’ The Trees, Live As One and Everdene.

It’s tough for three-year-olds against older horses at this time of the year but Mary O was close-up in a strong feature last start and could have too much class for some seasoned opposition and it helps that Mark Khan and Lezeanne Forbes are in form. Top weight Miss Calypso was just short of a run last time out at Scottsville and this 1400m trip from draw two looks tailor made for a big effort.

Market resilient in difficult trade

The Bloodstock South Africa National 2YO Sale that concluded at Germiston last week saw the market show some welcome resilience in difficult trading conditions.

In total 316 of the 392 catalogued lots sold, at an average of R103,085, 14% up on last year’s figure of R89,802.

The aggregate of R32,575,000 was also significantly up on the R29,455,000 of a year ago.

The late Soft Falling Rain was leading sire, with his 14 lots fetching R2,740,000.

Newly crowned champion breeders Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein swiftly got into the swing of things on Thursday.

Early sales topper was Soft Falling Rain colt Herecomestherain. Sent down by Wilgerbosdrift, he was snapped up for R600,000 by Jehan Malherbe’s Form Bloodstock organisation.

And Mauritzfontein also got into the action when their Bold Silvano colt Sun Lark went to Louis Goosen for R350,000.

Later on, Silvano colt Silver Stardust made the highest price of R800,000. He was consigned by Klipdrif Stud (as agent) and snapped up by Lynton Ryan.

Silvano was last week crowned South Africa’s Champion Sire for a fourth time.

Also making R800,000 was the unnamed lot 267, a Cheveley Stud-bred Dynasty colt from Mystic Spring. He is a grey full-brother to past graduate and Equus champion Bela-Bela and the champion male, Rabiya, and was bought by Kestorm Investments.

Bass Racing purchased the top-priced filly in the form of Tenacity (Lot 38). The latter, who was consigned by Varsfontein Stud, was knocked down for R450 000, with the filly being a daughter of Varsfontein Stud’s rising sire star Master Of My Fate, and a half-sister to Listed Swallow Stakes winner All At Once.

Skhwelemthini Investments were leading buyers at the 2019 National 2YO Sale, purchasing five two-year-olds for R2.365 million. Their tally included the Dynasty colt Victor Emmanuel (Lot 385) – a R700 000 buy from Wilgerbosdrift.

Klipdrif Stud, as agent, ended up as the leading vendors, with the Robertson-based farm selling 15 of their 20 lots offered for a gross amount of R3.655 million.

Soft Falling Rain was the top sire at the sale, with all of his 14 lots on offer selling for R2.74 million. His top lot was the Wilgerbosdrift consigned colt named Herecomestherain (Lot 46) who made R600 000.

Bloodstock South Africa’s Gary Grant was understandably upbeat after the sale, commenting, “I think it is safe to say that this sale was a resounding success. It gave vendors some hope in what can best be described as uncertain times in this industry. One of the most pleasing aspects of the sale was the significant part played by several newcomers to the racing industry.”
