ABOUT WOOLAVINGTON 2000 (Grade 1):

The final “classic” tests for three-year-olds, the Grade 1 Woolavington 2000, make Daily News day at Greyville on Saturday, May 31 the country’s premier meeting for the young potential champions and very importantly, give them a final opportunity to secure a place in the country’s greatest event, the R3,5-million Vodacom Durban July.

The quality of the three-year-old crop is the barometer for the international status of a country’s racing industry and with many outstanding young locally-bred horses having proven themselves on the international stage, the South African industry has gained enormous overseas respect and interest.

The three-year-olds have been dominant in the country’s big races in recent years and have won no less than 10 of the last 18 runnings of the great race. The Woolavington 2000 which is confined to fillies, are two of the most important races on the calendar and are followed with great interest by the racing public and international buyers.

2013

Confined to three-year-old fillies, the Woolavington 2000 has been run in tandem with the Daily News 2000 and was given a major stakes boost from R250 000 to R500 000 when it was elevated from Grade 2 to Grade 1 status in 2005. In addition to its importance for the top fillies to make it into the big race on July 5, it is a major boost for the paddock value of those that feature in the result.

Great fillies have won this race including the mighty Ipi Tombe who went on to win the Vodacom Durban July then become an international star in Dubai.

2012

In the Grade 1 Woolavington 2000 De Kock’s SA Oaks winner Ilha Bela was the outright favourite but had to settle for second place behind stable companion Viva Maria who led from the break and never looked like losing.

Under Anthony Delpech the Jet Master filly stayed on strongly to win by four lengths from Ilha Bela with the Australian-bred filly Dubai Gina from the Vaughan Marshall stable just over a length further back in third place.

2011

Woolavington 2000 – This race saw the potential brilliance of the Mike de Kock-trained Australian-bred filly Igugu who led throughout to win as she liked in a time only fractionally slower than that set by The Apache. She finished ahead of the Justin Snaith-trained Emerald Cove and her own stable companion Berry Blaze who had raced at the back of the field after a slow start until the home straight.

Igugu, who had only been beaten twice in her previous seven races, went on to win the Vodacom Durban July, the Ipi Tombe at Turffontein and the J&B Met and will be returning to contest the Vodacom Durban July again this year.le, taking the KZN Guineas, the Daily News 2000 and then the Vodacom Durban July.

2009

WOOLAVINGTON 2000

Confined to three-year-old fillies, the Woolavington 2000 has been run in tandem with the Daily News 2000 and has been given a major boost this year with the stakes being increased to R1-million. In addition to its importance for the top fillies to make it into the big race on July 5, it is a major boost for the paddock value of those that feature in the result.

Great fillies have won this race including the mighty Ipi Tombe who went on to win the Vodacom Durban July then become an international star in Dubai.

2014

It was touted as the first big clash of the season, as the Cape Derby winner Legislate faced off against the racing royalty and triple crown holder Louis The King. However the Justin Snaith-trained Dynasty colt Legislate proved himself top class in giving fellow three year olds stars of 2014 a galloping lesson in Gr 1 Daily News 2000 at Greyville under Richard Fourie.

*Legislate went on to stamp his authority on the Champions Season by winning Africa’s greatest race the Vodacom Durban July just over a month later.

2013

Vercingetorix was perfectly placed by Anthony Delpech from a wide draw, and showed his hand early by taking the lead. Once in front his inexperience told as he began to loaf in front and appeared to give his biggest rival Capetown Noir the opportunity to steal the glory. But then the champion instinct kicked in and he fought back to win the Gr 1 Daily News 2000. Now with a record of four from four, Vercingetorix became the first three-year-old colt to go into the Vodacom Durban July unbeaten since 1987.

*Unfortunately Vercingetorix never took his place in the Vodacom Durban July, but did compete successfully internationally winning the Group One Jebel Hatta in 2014 and Group 2 Al Rashidiya in 2015 in Dubai and is now on his way back to South Africa to stand amongst the best stallions in the country at Maine Chance Stud.

2012

The pressure was certainly on the Gr 1 Investec Cape Derby-winner Jackson as he was sent out at short odds for the 2012 running of the Gr1 Daily News 2000. Under the calm hands of young Karis Teetan, Jackson was perfectly settled behind the early pace. Once in the straight Teetan switched him out for a run and he was quickly eyeballing the leaders. At the 200m mark the son of Dynasty kicked clear of the pack to secure his second Grade 1 title, significantly slashing his odds for the upcoming Vodacom Durban July.

* Jacksons third Gr 1 victory came in the Champions Cup a year later and he is now doing stud duties at the picturesque Highlands Stud. His regular pilot Karis Teetan is now successfully riding in Hong Kong.

Joey Ramsden saddles Chevauchey

Ramsden has them lined up

Conspicuous by his absence is the Gr 1 Grand Parade Cape Guineas winner Act Of War who is being targeted at the Winter Series in Cape Town.

Ramsden’s Champions Season string consists of King Of Pain, The Conglomerate, Kingvoldt, Disco Al, Coltrane, Gallica Rose, St. Tropez, Grey Light, Azincourt, and one unraced two-year-old.

King Of Pain travelled up to Johanesburg  recently to run in the Gr 1 HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes, a race for which Ramsden said he had enjoyed a superb preparation, but  had to be scratched after kicking a stable wall and bruising his heels.

Consequently, Ramsden has pulled the five-year-old Greys Inn gelding out of the Gr 1 President’s Champions Challenge and will run him in the Gr 2 Drill Hall Stakes over 1400m at Greyville on May 2 instead. Unfortunately, he has drawn wide in the Drill Hall in 25 out of 32 entries. However, it would be no surprise to still see him lining up as one of his chief targets will be the defence of his Gr 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge crown over 1600m at Greyville on June 6.

The Conglomerate, a classy Australian-bred colt by Lonhro, has been priced up at 45/1 for the July and is one of the best value horses in the market at present as he has the look of a progressive type who has still not been fully exposed. He won the Listed Politician Stakes over 1900m last time out on January 10 and gave the impression that he would stay further. He received 3kg from the runner up MLJet that day, but had to be switched once or twice in the straight and won cosily in the end. He is merit rated 100 and has drawn 15 out of 28 entries for the Gr 2 KRA Guineas on May 2. The Gr 1 Daily News 2000 on May 30 is likely to be his chief target and as the male three-year-old division is not overly strong this year he is likely to make his presence felt, although on the other hand the mighty filly Majmu is due to be an entry in that race.

The Gr 1 Grand Parade Cape Guineas third-placed Kingvoldt had a fine Champions Season pipe opener last Friday night when conceding 3kg to the classy Heartland over 1400m at Greyville and being beaten just 0,75 lengths. This classy Western Winter colt is drawn  17 for the KRA Guineas. He hasn’t raced beyond a mile to date and as he was not entered for the July he looks likely to run in the Gold Challenge rather than the Daily News, although being out of a Parade Leader mare he could possibly stay further than 1600m.

Disco Al will likely have his best chance of feature success in staying races and could have races like the Gr 3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup over 2400m, the Gr 2 Track And Ball Derby over 2400m and the eLan Property Group Gold Cup over 3200m, all at Greyville, as his chief targets. He has drawn 11 in the Listed Sledgehammer over 1750m on Sunday and is a versatile type who is also effective over this trip.

Coltrane is one of the best stayers in the country so will likely have all of the aforementioned staying races on his program. He is drawn 15 in Sunday’s Sledgehammer, a race he finished a short-head second in last year from a wide draw, which proved that he is also effective over this distance.

Gallica Rose is a Silvano filly who has come into her own this season and, having finished a 0,2 length second in the Listed Sun Classique Handicap over 2400m last time out, she could have staying races for fillies and mares on her agenda. The merit rated 95 filly is drawn 8 in the Listed Scarlet Lady over 1750m at Scottsville on Sunday and could then perhaps be entered in races like the Listed East Coast Cup over 2000m at Greyville on May 17 and the Gr 2 Gold Circle Oaks over 2400m at Greyville  on June 21. The Gold Cup might be on the cards if she does well in those races.

St. Tropez received 3kg from the classy Ultimate Dollar on Sunday at Greyville and was awarded the result on objection. Anthony Delpech was certain that he would have won the race but for the interference. This Silvano gelding  has a nice turn of foot and his tendency of hanging to the right will make him suited to Greyville, so it is a surprise to see him not entered in the KRA Guineas and perhaps the Gr 1 Daily News 2000 is his chief target as he will relish the extra trip on pedigree, being a full-brother to former narrow Investec Cape Derby runner up Tan Can.

Grey Light is a strapping filly by top USA sire Tapit and has dropped to a 93 merit rating, so should be watched in handicaps as Cape Town horses often have suppressed merit ratings due to the class of horse there. She has faced the like of Majmu and Inara. The sprint-miler Count Dubois  gelding  Azincourt is another to watch in handicaps.

Ramsden’s Summerveld string is being taken care of by Alson Ndzilana, who did a fine job for the yard at Clairwood last season.

2014 RISING SUN GOLD CHALLENGE (GRADE 1)

Horse: King Of Pain

Jockey: Bernard Fayd’Herb

Trainer: Joey Ramsden

Owners: Mr & Mrs D Naik, Mesdames K Finch & B Kieswetter & Mr J Ramsden

Breeder: Arc-En-Ciel Stud

ABOUT RISING SUN GOLD CHALLENGE (GRADE 1):

With just days before the final field for the Vodacom Durban July is announced, the big race hopefuls have their last chance to impress the selection panel when they contest the R1-million, Grade 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge over 1 600m.

The weight-for-age event, originally run as the Clairwood Champion Stakes, traditionally attracts the finest milers in the country and has produced some of the most exciting finishes seen on South African tracks.

ROLL OF HONOUR:

2014

The four-year-old grey gelding King Of Pain took a massive leap from relative obscurity on the July Log to a serious contender for the country’s premier event when he led throughout to win the R1-million, Grade 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge over 1 600m at Clairwood on Saturday. Ridden confidently by Bernard Fayd’Herbe for trainer Joey Ramsden, the son of former Vodacom Durban July winner Greys Inn went quickly to the lead from his 10 draw and dictated the pace before being set alight in the home straight to hold off the “big three” in the field and win in impressive fashion. Winning in a time of 95.45 secs which was only fractionally better than the class average and considerably slower than the course record held by Free My Heart, the tactics adopted mirrored the dreaded “Cape crawl” and left Yorker, Capetown Noir and Beach Beauty a little flat-footed early in the straight. The three followed King Of Pain home headed by Beach Beauty who produced another gallant performance.

2013

There was just no stopping South Africa’s Champion miler Variety Club and he led the field of this year’s renewal of the Rising Sun Gold Challenge on a merry dance as he once again made the pace and, when temporarily threatened in the straight, shifted up a gear to win as he liked by a length.

It was the gallant mare Beach Beauty that had thrown out the challenge but Anton Marcus was fully aware of what he had under him and the four-year-old son of Var completed his consecutive success in the race unextended.

This pair of champions was followed home by another star of the turf, the 2012 winner of the Vodacom Durban July Pomodoro, with stable companion Whiteline Fever chasing hard to fill the fourth place.

2012

The country’s premier test for aspirant milers, this race has been won by some star thoroughbreds and this year saw one of the greatest milers for many decades in the striking son of Var, Variety Club. Having won the Grade 1 Cape Yearling Sale Guineas and the Grade 2 KRA Guineas, he was the horse to beat in this top Clairwood event.

As expected, the colt was in sparkling form and under a magnificent ride by Anton Marcus, went to the front from the start and won comfortable without coming under any pressure. Castlethorpe ran a gutsy race to lead the rest of the pack home with Pierre Jourdan a length back in third place.

2014 Post Merchants

Horse: VARIKATE

Jockey: Grant Van Niekerk

Trainer: S J Snaith

Owners: Mr J Mahony

Breeder: Mr C W Nelson

ABOUT: The Post Merchants Racemeeting

Initially run as the Durban Merchants and with a history going back decades, the R350 000, Grade 2 Post Merchants over 1 200m at Greyville on Friday June 13 is a merit-rated handicap drawing most of the top speed horses in the country.

In the early days of racing the business people of a town, the merchants, put up the stake money for races and this was a tradition carried on for many years. These races became known as The Merchants and it is quite likely that at the first meeting held in Durban on January 14 and 15 in 1852 the main event was funded by the merchants in the city.

That first meeting was held on track cut from the bush between the Umgeni River and the current location of Greyville 45 years before the now Vodacom Durban July was run at the present venue in 1897.

So the Post Merchants has a long history and could well have been established way back in those early years.

Today it carries a stake of R350 000 put up by Gold Circle Racing and is the premier annual speed event run at Greyville.

ROLL OF HONOUR:

2014

Under a confident ride by young jockey Grand van Niekerk, the Var filly Varikate gave her opponents a galloping lesson when she led throughout to win the Grade 2 Post Merchants over 1 200m at Greyville.

Van Niekerk, regular stable jockey for the Mike Bass yard, was engaged by fellow Cape trainer Justin Snaith to partner the four-year-old after his stable rider Richard Fourie had been injured in a fall the previous weekend and the young man produced another polished ride.

Snaith heads the race for the champion trainer title and the win will have consolidated his position and shortened the odds on his winning the title particularly with the ammunition, which includes the top three-year-old Legislate, that he has in his stable.

Easy to back at 8-1 with the Grade 1 Mercury Sprint winner All Is Secret a weak favourite at 5-1, Varikate went into the race as a four-time winner with moderate credentials at feature race level apart from a fourth place in The City of Pietermaritzburg SA Fillies Sprint at Scottsville. That race under 60kg was a fair effort and with 53.5kg to shoulder in the Post Merchants she had to be considered a candidate for a share of the Post Merchants stake.

Van Niekerk bounced the filly out from her eight draw and used her early speed to nip across to take the lead with Happy Forever and All Is Secret showing up early. Happy Forever suffered a problem and jockey Bernard Fayd’Herbe began to ease him out of the race causing a number of runners to take avoiding action and affecting their chances to varying degrees.

All the while Varikate was bowling along at the head of the field followed by All Is Secret and Showmetheway but when they hit the straight Van Niekerk gave the filly her head and it was clear that she was never going to be beaten. All Is Secret failed to find an extra kick and it was Eddie Sweat and Kingston Boy that ran on the best with Kingston Boy finishing the better for second place ahead of Eddie Sweat and Tevez.

In the post-race interview, Snaith described Varikate as the nicest natured filly in his yard and he foresaw her having a great season as a five-year-old

2013

Mike’s Choice, winner in 2012, was looking for the Merchants double for trainer Michael Roberts but faced a strong field of opponents including the gutsy Mike de Kock-trained British-bred mare Welwitschia. But it was the lesser fancied colt from the powerful stable, the Australian-bred son of Elusive Quality, Merhee, that stole her thunder, surging clear in the finish to beat his stable companion by more than a length.

As so often happens in these top sprinting races it became a cavalry charge after coming off the false rail with Welwitschia holding a narrow lead before Sean Veale switched Merhee into top gear and the four-year-old exploded through to win as he liked with the Joey Ramsden-trained Copper Parade finishing the best of the others for third place.

Merhee had earlier shown a touch of brilliance when winning on debut by 10 lengths and followed that up winning the Gr2 Senor Santa at Turffontein and running third behind Contador in the Gr1 Golden Horse Sprint at Scottsville.

2012

In a thrilling finish where it was anyone’s race with 200m to run, the five-year-old Tamburlaine gelding Mike’s Choice put in a late challenge to head the field then hold off the determined attention of the more fancied Rebel Knight and Sports Coach. Pacemaker Bielorruso threw in the towel at the top of the straight with the field spreading to form a cavalry charge down the home straight. In the end, Mike’s Choice prevailed by a mere neck from Rebel Knight with Sports Coach a length further back.

2011

A competitive field lined up for the Grade 2 Post Merchants at Greyville with the Captain Al gelding Captain’s Secret topping the bookmaker boards and trainer Dean Kannemeyer a little apprehensive about the chances of his runner, the three-year-old Splash Gold, that had drawn on the outside in stall 12. He had said before the race that had Splash Gold been drawn better, he would have made him a certainty.

But he need not have worried as the young horse proved too good for his opposition under Karl Neisius who managed to get him into a reasonable position after the start with Gaultier making the pace ahead of Jet Command and Winking Jack. Gaultier made a break for it in the straight with Winking Jack going out to challenge and Rebel Knight beginning to look dangerous.

Then Neisius let the three-year-old Splash Gold loose and he tore through the field to win as he liked. Neisius said after the race that when Splash Gold pulled him through coming off the false rail he knew he was on the winner. The placings were filled by Rebel Knight, Winking Jack and Gaultier.

2010

The Dennis Drier yard landed the Grade 2 Post Merchants over 1200m at Greyville on Friday night when the classy three-year-old Sharks Bay ran out an impressive winner under stable jockey Sean Cormack.

After a fair break from draw five, Cormack dropped Sharks Bay out to the rear of the field, where he secured the rail.

The field was compact as they turned for home and Sharks Bay was no more than five lengths off the lead.

Cormack dived for the inside as they came off the false rail, but found his way blocked so had to switch his mount outward. Here another horse began drifting in and Cormack was forced to switch outward again. Neither of these manouvres cost Sharks Bay much momentum owing to the jockey’s fine anticipation and he had also carried out Drier’s instructions not to panic if experiencing traffic problems.

Once Sharks Bay saw daylight he accelerated impressively and swept past the Glen Kotzen-trained favourite, Thunder Key, who had kicked on well from a handy position.

Thunder Key only just held on for second ahead of his stablemate, Lord Of The Sea, who was flying at the finish after turning home in last place.

The Colin Scott-trained Extinct just got up for fourth in a blanket finish. Only two lengths covered the first 10 horses.
