Marinaresco on ‘July’ mission

Last season’s Champions Cup winner Marinaresco has been sent to Durban early in Candice Bass-Robinson’s bid to make amends for the gelding’s near miss in the Vodacom Durban July and gain rich compensation for his winless Cape Town campaign.

Marinaresco (Liesl King)

Marinaresco (Liesl King)

Mrs Robinson said: “Marinaresco had a break after the Met – not on a farm but at home – and he went to Durban last week. His possible route could be the Drill Hall (May 6), Rising Sun Gold Challenge (June 10) and the July.”

Some of the stable’s other KZN challengers have also travelled and apparently the trainer’s new private yard at Summerveld has made this possible.

She said: “In previous years sending horses to Durban was all a bit of a rush but now that we have our own place, with Robert Fayd’Herbe there, the horses can go earlier and come into the Durban season more gradually.”

Silver Mountain, runaway winner of last season’s Cape Fillies Guineas but only fifth in the Klawervlei Majorca and the Prix Du Cap, will also be making the great trek but she is to be upped in distance.

Mrs Robinson explained: “The Prix Du Cap wasn’t one of her best runs but I am not sure that she isn’t looking for more ground so we are going to try her over a bit further.”

But a different travel plan is to be adopted for the Sceptre and CTS Sprint winner Live Life – “We will get her fit in Cape Town and then raid for the Poinsettia Stakes (at Scottsville on April 30) before she runs in the City Of Pietermaritzburg Fillies Sprint.”

Scottsville Sunday Tips and Race Previews by Andrew Harrison

Scottsville Sunday March 10 Tips and Race Previews by Andrew Harrison

Race 1
Preview: Both BOBBY’S EXPRESS and BRIGHT BLESSED DAY showed up well on debut. Bobby’s Express raced in soft ground and finished in good time so could prove the pick of the two. HE’S A KEEPER raced green behind Bobby’s Express and has not been fitted with a tongue-tie which could see him make major improvement. EXQUISITE EIGHT made a promising debut also in soft ground and looks certain to come on from that. The betting should prove your best guide given the number of first timers. (Andrew Harrison: 3-4-8-16)

Race 2
Preview: SWIFT DANCER took on colts and winners on debut but found the winner Autumn In Seattle too good. Although well beaten she should come on from that and rates a strong chance. SIMPLY SCRUMPTIOUS made a smart debut on the same afternoon behind the winner who is rated by the stable. GYPSY QUEEN was narrowly beaten when making her debut on the poly. If she takes to the turf she must rate a chance. DANCEALOT found some market support on debut and is likely to improve. (Andrew Harrison: 16-14-7-4).

Race 3
Preview: BURNT CHERRY has improved with every start. She just failed last start but now gets blinkers. She has a tricky draw but should go close again. RHYME OR REASON has consistent Highveld form and has been a beaten favourite on a number of occasions. She has been rested and makes her local debut but if ready will go close. KHETIWE has run two cracking races for her new stable. The rise in trip should suit and Anton Marcus will be aboard. AMADORA was much improved last run in the soft. She needs to repeat that effort. (Andrew Harrison: 1-2-4-3).
Race 4
Preview: AMAZON KING shows some promise and was close-up in a handicap last start. He is better weighted here and although up in trip he should go close. RIKITIKITANA meets Amazon King on the same weight terms as their latest meeting and there should not be much between the two again. CARIBBEAN DAY was a game winner of his last start and has a chance again while the filly TRINI’S COLATERAL has a handy weight and is useful. (Andrew Harrison: 6-4-7-9).

Race 5
Preview: Stable companions SABRE CHARGE and the filly FORBIDDEN JEWEL both go well over course and distance. Forbidden Jewel is now 3kg better off for their last meeting and can turn the tables. MR WINSOME goes this trip for the first time but is on hot form. He is giving away a lot of weight but is still well in. SERISSA is a game front runner and has a canny judge of pace aboard which will make him dangerous. (Andrew Harrison: 6-1-4-2)

Race 6
Preview: MARRIOT shows promise although only shedding his maiden last run. Both runs have been over course and distance and he can follow up. GOOD TO GIVE has his third run after a break. He started favourite at his last two and can make amends. ROY’S AIR FORCE has been knocking at the door. He has a four-claiming apprentice up here and should be thereabouts again.  RESTLESS ROGUE was in need of his last start. He is better than his form suggests. (Andrew Harrison: 6-7-8-10).

Race 7
Preview: LUNAR RUSH has won her last two in good style. She is more than useful but has an inexperienced apprentice aboard looking for his first winner. HOT MAMBO probably needed her last effort on the poly. She shed her maiden over course and distance and that form has since been franked. RAINBOWINTHESKY has improved with every start and shed her maiden in good fashion and could follow up. ABOUND WEST appears to have her problems and returns from a break. Both wins have been on the poly but if near her best she can feature. SPIRITOFADVENTURE has also improved with each outing and is one to keep an eye on. (Andrew Harrison: 1-9-8-3).

Race 8
Preview: INDIAN TRACTOR has gone close at his last two and rates the one to beat. ADMIRAL’S GUEST has come on with every run of late. Will go close. LUNAR TIDE takes on males but has not been too far back. She gets a four-claimer and can finish in the money. LORD HOGAN has shown some improvement in blinkers and can place. (Andrew Harrison: 1-2-9-3).

Turffontein Saturday Tips and Race Previews by David Thiselton

Turffontein Saturday March 11 Tips and Race Previews by David Thiselton

Race 1
Preview: Piere Strydom stays aboard the front-running QUEEN ANNE, who went clear over 1450m last time before finding no extra, and he is likely to have learnt from the run so has a good chance from a good draw. FLAMINGO VLEI should be improving being by Silvano and on the evidence of her last run is interesting over a step down in trip. GREAT SOUND has improved with blinkers and a repeat of her penultimate over course and distance gives her a shout. (David Thiselton 3-2-4)

Race 2
Preview: BI POT ran a cracker against the boys over 1600m last time and should relish the Standside track with its long straight. HIGH SEAS BEAUTY over raced over 1400m last time which doesn’t augur well for her chances of enjoying this step up in trip, but it might have been racing under lights which unsettled her and if she settles here she looks to have the class to go close. DALAAL will be improving being by Silvano and looks likely to produce a strong finish over this course and distance. EMILY JAY goes well for Strydom and from a fair draw should be suited to this course and distance. SUN SENTINEL is 1kg better off for a one length beating by High Seas Beauty over 1400m and on pedigree should stay this trip, although she didn’t go on with it the last time she tried the course and distance. (David Thiselton 6-3-7-4-5)

Race 3
Preview: CHEAT THE CHEATERS full sister Caitlin’s Answer has won over this trip and he has the best form in this race so is the one to beat. SO SWIFT was staying on strongly last time over 1800m from a wide draw, beating Voodoo by 6,2 lengths, and being by A. P. Arrow he will relish this trip and could be a threat despite another wide draw. VOODOO had the run of the race last time from a low draw over 2600m on the Inside track and stayed on well, just failing, and he should be thereabouts again despite a tougher draw. DISCOVERER went close over this course and distance in January and although he has 2,85 lengths to find on Voodoo on their meeting over 2600m there is now a reversal in draw fortunes in his favour. MIESQUE’S RHUMBA has beaten Discovered twice at the Vaal in staying trips but in their last two meetings, both at Turffontein, the latter was comfortably ahead. (David Thiselton 1-5-2-3-4)

Race 4
Preview: SILVER STRIPE is 4,5kg better off with Patchit Up Baby for a 1,5 length beating over 2200m on the Inside Track and will appreciate the step up in trip. PATCHIT UP BABY probably prefers this Standside track due to her sustained finish and she still has a chance, but carrying 61kg and giving 9kg to Silver Stripe is a hard ask. ZAFIRA is a big and classy stayer and is course and distance suited, so she will be a big runner from pole position, although on the downside this is first outing since returning from Cape Town. (David Thiselton 6-1-2)

Race 5
Preview: ALAADEL disappointed over 1800m last time but before that produced a resolute finish over 1400m and can be involved here if settling from a wide draw. BOLD VIKING is well regarded and might be looking for this trip so can do well off a competitive looking merit rating. COPPER POT is drawn in pole over a suitable trip but won’t find it easy giving weight al round. Khumalo rides the maiden PILOU, who was finishing strongly over 1700m last time, but this is his return from a three month layoff and the strength of his form is questionable. WHOSETHEBOSSNOW flew up to win his maiden over 1600m last time, but the form is questionable. BIBLICAL SUSAN ran a good race last time over this trip but was over racing early and it is not going to be easy here giving weight to all the boys except one. RAYDAVERIC has been disappointing but could still improve. (David Thiselton 3-4-1-6-7-2)

Race 6
Preview: ALFOLK won impressively on debut and being by Lonhro out of a three-quarter sister to a Gr 1 winner over 1000m he should have the class to become a leading two-year-old feature contender. Stablemate PUNTA CANA also impressed over 1000m on debut. TRIBAL FORCE’s formline compares favourably with Alfolk considering he was slow away on his winning debut. BARRACK STREET by Dynasty is a half-brother to Jay Peg and although small has speed and can be a contender if starting better than he did over 1200m last time In the R1 million Kuda Sprint. ALPINE ECHO was backed on debut and showed good speed throughout to win and the form has worked out quite well. CRASSUS is 3kg better off with Alfolk for 2,25 length beating but the latter won easier than the margin suggests. (David Thiselton 1-4-6-3-2-7)

Race 7
Preview: KISSABLE has destroyed the opposition in two starts over 800m and 1000m respectively and looks hard to beat. EURYTHMICS is a full sister to Gr 1 winner Gulf Storm and receives 5kg from Kissable on her debut. LA BELLA MIA looks to be an improving sort and will likely show pace throughout. STAR PROFILE beat La Bella Mia over 1200m but the latter showed pace there and will prefer the 1000m trip. DARING DIVA has won both her starts but has to give weight to all except Kissable. (David Thiselton 2-7-3-6-1)

Race 8
Preview: EXQUISITE TOUCH has a good chance at the weights on her best Jo’burg form if she starts well over her favoured trip. JOAN RANGER has good speed and a kick and looks capable of rising above her 100 merit rating. CRYSTAL GLAMOUR is on the up and on form lines and weights there is not much between her and Joan Ranger. (David Thiselton 6-1-3-9-14)

Race 9
Preview: CLEVER GUY was given the maximum six points for his easy Graduation Plate win over 1000m last time and he looks well weighted here. RAASMAAL is an improving sort and looks the biggest danger. FLEMINGTON won his maiden well second time out despite a slow start and starts handicapping off a reasonable merit rating (David Thiselton 2-3-9-1-5)

Race 10
Preview: DAN THE LAD has stayed on well in his last two starts over 1200m and 1160m so should enjoy this step up in trip and is drawn well. SYLVAN SAINT is by Silvano and is a half-brother to the multiple-winning speedsters Mysterio, Fun To Fly and Giant Strides. KING OF MANI is ideally draw in pole for his front-running style and could be a threat as he has gone close in his last two over this trip and on formlines there is not much between him and Dan The Lad. INTREPID SILVA has run two good sprints and should enjoy this trip on pedigree. THAROOS was running on quite well over 1200m on the Inside Track last time but was overtaken and narrowly beaten by Dan The Lad, and there is now a reversal in draw fortunes. (David Thiselton 2-10-3-7-1)

Mike De Kock (Nkosi Hlophe)

Alfolk to remain unbeated

Turffontein is the place to be on Saturday as there are no fewer than six features races in a competitive ten race meeting.

In the Listed Storm Bird Stakes over 1000m Alfolk has a classy pedigree and won effortlessly on debut over 1000m so can follow up. His stablemate Punta Cana has scope for improvement too. Tribal Force, Barrack Street and Alpine Echo all possess speed aplenty but the De Kock pair look good enough to get punters through the exotics.

Mike De Kock (Nkosi Hlophe)

Mike De Kock (Nkosi Hlophe)

In The Listed Ruffian Stakes over 1000m Kissable has tremendous cruising speed and has not been stopping at the line in her two facile wins over 800m and 1000m respectively. She looks impossible to oppose against those who have raced, although La Bella Mia is a typically progressive daughter of Gimmethegreenlight and could get closer to her this time. The first-timer Eurythmics is a full sister to the Gr 1-winning sprinter Gulf Storm and receives 5kg from Kissable, so she could perhaps be included in the Jackpot.

The Listed Bauhinia Handicap over 1000m could be won by last year’s Ruffian Stakes winner Exquisite Touch. In November she was beaten a length by Joan Ranger over 1160m, but if weight-for-age is included she is now effectively 3,5kg better off. Furthermore, she will enjoy the step down in trip. On the downside this is her first outing since returning from a disappointing run at Kenilworth over 1200m. Joan Ranger has speed and a kick and will be a tough nut to crack. The consistent Crystal Glamour beat both of these horses in the aforementioned race last November. She is 2,5kg worse off with Joan Ranger for a one length beating, so there is not much in it.

In the last leg of the Pick 6, the Gold Rush Sprint over 1100m, Clever Guy looks well handicapped on his last run. However, the main opposition there might well have had off days. Therefore, the progressive Raasmaal, who is having his third run after a layoff and going for a hattrick, should be considered for exotics.

In the first leg of the Pick 6, the Sun Chariot Handicap over 2450m, Silver Stripe can reverse form with Patchit Up Baby at the weights, although the latter will enjoy the long straight and can’t be ignored. Zafira is a big, classy stayer and is preferred for third ahead of the capable Zante and the disappointing Inaninstant.

The Egoli Mile looks wide open but Alaadel has been chosen. If he settles he should be affective over this trip and can beat Bold Viking and Copper Pot.

Michael Robinson

‘Smokey’ running hot

Smokey Affair stands out at Kenilworth tomorrow because she has the proverbial stone in hand in the Racing. It’s A Rush Handicap.

The Mike Robinson-trained filly was a four-length sixth of 15 to Just Sensual in the Cape Fillies Guineas – and there was no fluke about it because she had previously finished a creditable fourth in the Choice Carriers – yet she is still on the same 86 handicap mark. Had she finished half a length closer she would have been fifth and the handicappers would have been free to up her rating to around 99.

Michael Robinson

Michael Robinson

Over this trip the 13 points she has in hand represent more than five lengths! Of course, it’s seldom as simple or as foolproof as this and the big negative is that she has not raced in the intervening 14 weeks.

“She had a nasty cough and a snotty nose,” recalls Robinson’s wife Louella. “We also felt that we needed to get a bit more condition on her so we gave her a break. She has come back well and her work is phenomenal.”

The next best on the card could well prove to be Sister Soozie in the Place Your Bets Maiden. The Andre Nel filly started second favourite for a mile maiden last month but had a bad draw and was among the backmarkers until well into the straight. She finished strongly but she had too much to do.

The extra two furlongs here will be much in her favour and should enable Grant van Niekerk to christen his association with Plattner Racing. Janice’s Secret is similarly lightly-raced and rates the main danger.

The opening Juvenile Fillies looks between Believethisbeauty, Rose In Bloom and Casual Diamond assuming that Joey Ramsden adopts his usual patient introduction with R4.5 million newcomer Dynasty’s Blossom. You could argue that Rose In Bloom’s form is marginally the best – and she is the choice of the sahorseracing computer – but Vaughan Marshall spoke highly of his charge last month (“talented, shows a lot of speed”) and there was plenty of money for her. She gets the vote.

The computer goes for Gadget Man 35 minutes later but he disappointed last time as did Come On Sonny whereas Risky Rambo showed significant improvement. He looks the part.

Justin Snaith, who introduces the Dynasty gelding C’Est La Vie here, may win race three with Dawn Rising who finished well to get second last time on her first run for four months and had Waterbaby a length back fourth.

Forest Fox (JC Photography)

Watch out for Fox

Racing has been a little tricky for punters on the Highveld since soft going has prevailed and the Vaal card tomorrow might yield some healthy dividends again.

The highest rated race on the card is a MR 96 Handicap over 1200m. Forest Fox was for a long time a frustrating horse as he has plenty of ability but would shirk the issue at the first opportunity. However, he has turned the corner since the headgear has been removed and has earned a cheque in every one of his last six starts, including one winner’s cheque. Last time out he had to overcome a wide draw over 1400m, but was up there early and stayed on well to finish just 2,2 lengths behind the top class New Predator at level weights. He would prefer that 1400m trip, but back in this handicap over 1200m is an interesting contender.

However, it looks to be an open race and he can’t be bankered. Dennis The Menace always has to be considered when well drawn in a race with pace in it. He is drawn close to the outside, which is usually the side the jockeys track over to on this straight course. There should be enough pace with Isphan and Just As I Said in the race. Miracle Bureau is a talented sort who is ideally distance suited. If he is able to find good cover early as well as a good passage between horses, his excellent turn of foot can carry him close.

Forest Fox ( JC Photo)

Forest Fox ( JC Photography)

Just As I Said has been in fine form and just failed to make it four-on-the-trot last time. He remains on the same merit rating and should be involved again. Amazing Stike has been in consistent form off this merit rating and should be thereabouts again with Delpech up from a high draw. Anjaal, who was a close third in a Gr 1 over 1600m as a two-year-old, did well in his first run for a new yard last time over 1160m. He now has the blinkers off. However, his draw of two could be tricky.

The prevous race is an interesting MR 84 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1600m. Comme-ci-comme-ca is obviously well regarded as she has been tried in two Gr 3s. She was not disgraced in either. She should enjoy this trip on pedigree. If she tucks in early from a low draw she will have a good chance. It is not easy to find a best bet on the card, so she gets the nod being an up-and-coming sort who should start coming into her own now.

However, the risk averse will probably be seeing this as a typically open fillies and mares handicap. Sim-Alley-Bank disappointed over 1450m last time out after taking a bump at the start. However, she is now reunited with Lyle Hewitson, who rode her to a five length victory in her penultimate start over 1400m at this course in soft going. She was given a seven point raise for the win, but is by Bankable whose progeny appear to improve steadily in their four-year-old year. Sisters Of Mercy has run two good races since being raised to this 73 merit rating. That followed a win over this trip and she can do well over a course and distance she has won over before.

Work Ethic has faced some tough opposition lately and has dropped to a competitive merit rating. In this weaker field she will have a chance. Our Miracle might be stretched by this trip, but from a good draw she could be dangerous from the front. Beaute Noir has shown promise over this trip, but does return from a three month layoff following a disappointing effort on the poly. Teenage Dream only just failed when stepped up this trip last time. However, she has another possibly tough draw here.

Zortziko is an interesting runner in the eighth, a MR 72 Handicap over 1000m. He has a good draw and is four points lower in the merit ratings than the last time he ran over this trip, which was back in December when finishing just 1,75 lengths behind the fair sort Dolphin. If reproducing that effort he should go close.

Punters could accumulate some exotic money through Real Flight in the second race. On her debut over 1000m on the Turffontein Inside track, she was left a bit flat-footed as they went for home, but she then ran on well. She is by Jay Peg out of the speedy and classy Mana Mou and will relish the extra 200m here. She has a nice high draw.

In the first leg of the PA, the topweight Cape Marigold is well drawn over a suitable trip of 1600m, which is important as she is capable of a devastating finish.

In the last race of the day, My Friend Lee is another topweight who has been chosen to win. She has a high draw over an ideal 1400m trip. She won last time out over this course and distance and both the second and third horses have won since, so she can overcome a five-point raise.

Persian Rug (Candiese Marenwick)

Delpech opts for Persian Rug

The pace, or possibly a lack of it, could prove a major headache for punters searching for the winner of the Open Handicap (F&M) that heads the card at Scottsville this afternoon.

Only seven runners are due to face the starter over 1 950m and tactics are likely to play a major role in the outcome.

Anthony Delpech, most often aboard a runner from the Dean Kannemeyer yard, will in all likelihood have had the choice of either Little Chapel or Playboy Buddy for Kannemeyer but has instead opted for the Mike de Kock-trained Persian Rug.

Anthony Delpech (Nkosi Hlophe)

Anthony Delpech (Nkosi Hlophe)

The strapping daughter of Ideal World was possibly unlucky not to have won the Gr1 Thekwini Stakes as a two-year-old after pecking badly 50m out, just when a likely win was on the cards.

That juvenile crop has subsequently proven little more than average and Persian Rug’s form since then has borne that out with a victory in the Listed Syringa Handicap her only subsequent victory in a string of unplaced runs on the Highveld.

She has recently moved back to De Kock’s Summerveld yard and her form has improved markedly.

Her fourth career win came in a modest handicap on the Greyville poly but last time out she was a close-up second to Celtic Captain in a useful field of males in the UmThombothi Handicap on the Greyville turf over 2 000m.

Persian Rug looks ideally suited to today’s event although a slow pace could prove detrimental to her chances.

That said, Dress For Success comes into the race with only 49.5kg to shoulder and apprentice Ashton Arries could make use of his weight advantage on Paul Lafferty’s runner and set the pace.

The filly took a steep rise in class over a trip short of her optimum when taking on males over the Scottsville mile at her last start, coming off two wins on the bounce.

She meets some useful fillies here but the extra two furlongs and a light weight puts her in with a strong chance.

Persian Rug looks to have the wood on both Little Chapel and Killer Woman given their last meeting but they won’t be far behind while Playboy Buddy is also back over a more suitable trip and will also be dangerous.

Persian Rug (Candiese Marenwick)

Persian Rug (Candiese Marenwick)

Top weight Princess Varunya gets 1.5kg relief courtesy of apprentice Eric Ngwane but she has not quite fulfilled her early promise and has been off the boil at recent outings. In all, a false pace is a distinct possibility making a competitive handicap even more tricky but Delpech is a master of his trade and Persian Rug gets the nod ahead of Dress For Success.

Duncan Howells can round off the meeting with a double with Wild Wicket in the sixth and Roy’s Hollyhock in the last.

Wild Wicket is a lightly raced three-year-old that has shown some potential. He ran an excellent third on the Greyville poly first up out of the maidens behind What A Poet and that form was franked last Friday when Breakfast Club, four lengths back to Wild Wicket in that race, followed up with a win.

The switch to turf should also be in Wild Wicket’s favour.

Howells has a second string to his bow in bottom weight Mambo. The gelding is much improved since being fitted with a tongue-tie and was touched off a piece-of-paper over the course and distance last time out. He is in receipt of 8kg from his stable companion and must come into the picture. Roy’s Hollyhock was a beaten odds-on chance at her last start after two close-up seconds.

However, after the race she was found to have ‘tweaked’ a back muscle so it is best to draw a line through that run.

The stable is in good form and Roy’s Hollyhock is likely to bloom this afternoon. Her biggest threat could come in the form of Space Needle.

Andre Nel’s filly has shown up nicely in two sprints and should much prefer this trip. The stable is in red-hot form in Cape Town and that could feed through to their Summerveld satellite yard under Byron Forster.

President Trump

‘Trump’ speechless after gelding

The equine President Trump, was gelded at Snaith Racing’s stables at Philippi, Cape Town yesterday after proving difficult to train. “He was unruly and unmanageable,’’ said Justin Snaith. “All he wanted to do was jump all the fillies.’’

The son of Philanthropist was bought by Etienne Braun for R200 000 at the Emperors Palace Select Yearling Sale in April  last year. Continued Snaith: “President Trump was also very vocal and would just not focus on his work. I considered blinkers and a tongue-tie but he was so unmanageable that we had little option but to geld him.’’ Snaith, a Champion South Africa trainer and World Record holder of 8 winners on a day, mentioned that the colt had tons of ability but had a bad attitude and was a nightmare to work with.

Trainer of the Month – February 2017

ALYSON WRIGHT

There are some very powerful racing stables operating in KwaZulu-Natal including satellite operations of some of the biggest yards in the country making racing extremely competitive.

However, against the strong opposition the local yards have held their own and one of those is that of lady trainer Alyson Wright that had one of its best months in topping the trainer table for the month with eight winners and another four placings from just 26 runners.

That translates roughly into one winner from every three runners which is excellent and the stable supporters would have been extremely happy with the R76.90 return on the R1 win bets they placed on all her runners.

Well done Alyson

Thabo Mhlongo (Nkosi Hlophe)

Dream start for Mhlongo

Thabo Mhlongo, who has risen from a gardener into a prominent businessman, had a dream start to racehorse ownership last Wednesday at Scottsville when his part-owned Al Miqdaam colt Ishnana won on debut for the Garth Puller yard.

To add to the fairytale the horse acquired its name by combining the first names of Thabo’s children Ishmael and Nana.

Ishnana is an eye-catchingly robust two-year-old and has a lovely, resolute action, which creates the impression he is enjoying himself. After a bit of a tardy start and being forced sideways for a stride or two, he quickly made up the ground and was in the leading line. The handsome bay’s big white blaze and white socks makes him easy to pick out in the running. It soon became evident his ability matches his good looks.

Thabo Mhlongo (Nkosi Hlophe)

Thabo Mhlongo (Nkosi Hlophe)

He has a big stride and good cruising speed and he produced a good turn of foot when asked the question by Mandla Ntuli. He then wore the favourite Blackball down and won by half-a-length with the rest of the field spread out like the washing, which always suggests good form. He was not stopping at the line and Puller believes he is looking for further. On pedigree, he should do so as his dam Bird Strike, who is by Northern Guest, won over 1600m.

The story begins with the acquisition of the Australian-bred Al Miqdaam by KZN Midlands breeder Robert Smith in 2008.

Al Miqdaam, born in 2002, is bred in the purple being by the immortal Danehill out of St. Clemens Belle, who won a Gr 1 in Australia over a mile. St. Clemens Belle is by Don’t Say Halo, a son of the twice champion North American sire Halo.

Al Miqdaam was purchased at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for Aus$716,430 by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum in 2004. He ran in a number of barrier trials before leaving to be trained by Mike de Kock in South Africa.

Nathan Kotzen, De Kock’s Summerveld assistant, remembers Al Miqdaam as a very strong horse who was very quick too. He used to produce good work at home. On his South Africa debut as a five-year-old in September 2007 over 1000m at Scottsville, he finished a 2,25 length second at odds of 7/1.

However, he didn’t improve much on that effort in four further starts over trips from 1000-1600m. He needed gelding, but the yard were reluctant to do so as he was so well bred. A deal was then struck by KZN trainer Lennie Taylor, who purchased him as a stallion on behalf of Robert Smith.

Al Miqdaam is still owned by Smith, but currently stands on Roy Moodley’s farm in the Midlands. Moodley has sent many of his own mares to Al Miqdaam. Smith owned and trained Bird Strike, who ran 27 times for a win over 1600m and nine places. Garth Puller actually rode Bird Strike to second place in a maiden back in 2005.

Ishnana (Nkosi Hlophe)

Ishnana (Nkosi Hlophe)

In recent times Smith sold his main breeding farm to well-known KZN racing couple Avison and Mary Carlisle. However, the Carlisles allowed Smith’s mares to stay on. Bird Strike’s first foal Shikra, a filly by Al Miqdaam, won one race for Lola Crawford over 1600m on the poly and her second foal by Atso only managed one place in many starts.

However, both Smith and the Carlisles said Ishnana, who was originally named Blue Swallow, had been a striking colt from day one. Smith had always liked him and had as big hopes for him as the other one he bred that season, Queensberry Rules, who is a full-brother to the useful Al Miqdaam gelding Al Ciberano.

However, to Smith’s chagrin, Ishnana was rejected by the selectors for the Sibaya KZN Yearling Sale. Smith subsequently invited Thabo Mhlongo to come and have a look at a few horses on the farm. There were about four in the paddock when the latter arrived.

However, the colt with the big white blaze jumped out at Mhlongo immediately. He had made his mind up in seconds and nothing would budge him from that decision. Mhlongo has apparently had shares in a sheep farm before and Smith believed perhaps this experience had taught him a good eye for bloodstock.

Whatever the reason, Ishnana has proved to be an intuitive purchase by Mhlongo. Unfortunately, Ishnana will be Bird Strike’s final runner as she was found to have cancer on her neck. However, her legacy looks likely to live on for a while, considering the manner in which Ishnana won after shortening from 20/1 to 15/1.

Mhlongo was clearly elated by the victory last week and the bug is likely to have bitten. KZN racing have welcomed another passionate owner into their midst.
