Johannesburg raider LA BELLA MIA took full advantage of her light mass to register a first stakes success at the expense of some exalted male rivals.

Easy to back in her first appearance at the Durban track, the four-year-old daughter of Gimmethegreenlight hugged the rail as she bided her time and when given her head in the straight, she surged past pacesetter Bold Respect before landing the 1200m sprint by a cozy length from last year’s third Wynkelder.

Trained by Weiho Mawing for brother and former champion jockey, Weichong, the filly sent her broodmare value soaring with this career-best victory, her fifth, which also increased her earnings to R613,288.

“She’s a different horse around a turn,” Marwing said of the filly, who won twice around the Turffontein inside track before failing to feature in the Gr2 Camellia Stakes up the straight.

Continuing a purple patch for her Varsfontein-based sire, the filly is Gimmethegreenlight’s third stakes winner in the space of a week, following Barahin’s fluent victory in the Gr3 Jubilee Handicap and juvenile Kayden’s Pride success in the Listed Gatecrasher Stakes. Bred at Nadeson Park, she is out of three-time winner Mysterious Jet, while grandam Roman Goddess is a winning daughter of the champion racemare Vesta, a dual Gr1 Guineas winner who also defeated males in the Gr1 Champion Stakes.
