Brown confident of a big run
David Thiselton
Herman Brown will saddle Mourilyan in the Group 1 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Vase over 2 400m at Sha Tin on Sunday and is confident that he will run well enough to give himself a winning chance.
“He travelled very well and does not face a terribly strong field,” said Brown from Hong Kong yesterday. “Doctor Dino, last year’s winner, is the favourite but he has done a lot of travelling this year and is beatable. We worked Mourilyan yesterday (Tuesday) on the grass at Sha Tin and he was striding out very well.”
Mourilyan finished just a neck behind Doctor Dino in the Grade 1 Canadian International over 2 400m at Woodbine in October, so looks good value at 25-1 considering Doctor Dino is quoted at 3-1.
Mourilyan is being housed in a barn next door to the Mike de Kock-trained Eagle Mountain and the Sean Tarry-trained Mythical Flight, who run in the Group 1 Hong Kong Cup over 2 000m and Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint over 1 200m respectively.
Eagle Mountain is quoted at 5-2 second-favourite and Mythical Flight 8-1 third-favourite for their respective races.
Brown himself did not travel as well as Mourilyan as he and his assistant contracted food poisoning after dining out in Hong Kong on the night of their arrival.
Brown is also concerned about his Dubai bound horses which, owing to an aircraft problem, are still in England having originally being due to arrive in Dubai on December 4.
Mike de Kock’s Dubai-bound horses have also been stranded in England.
Brown said, “The horses are able to work in England but it is very cold there and we need to get them to Dubai in order that they can settle in. The ERA (Emirates Racing Authority) provide free transport to horses invited to the Carnival. The horses are now due to arrive in Dubai on Saturday depending on the availability of the replacement aircraft.”
Meanwhile Dougie Whyte won the Cathay Pacific Jockey’s International Championship at Happy Valley yesterday despite not riding a winner. He gathered a lot of points by being consistently placed.
Christophe Lemaire finished in second place.
