Glen Kotzen on his Canon Gold Cup chances
Glen Kotzen saddles Winona and Ser De Carerra for Saturday’s R1,2 million Grade 1 Canon Gold Cup at Greyville Racecourse, and is confident of the chances of Winona.

“I think she will run a super, super race,” he said. “She is spot on and loves this trip. She is versatile in her running style, has a nice galloping weight and a nice draw. In The Gold Cup I believe a horse with a light weight that stays well is always dangerous. The weight starts telling in the final 200m.”

Winona ran in last year’s Gold Cup but her finishing speed was sapped after being rushed into a 15 length lead after a slow-paced first half of the race. She did well to finish less than five lengths back.

She finished 0,75 lengths behind Bill Of Rights in the Lonsdale and followed with a fine second on July day over 2 400m, running on well both times.

She is 1,5kg better off with Bill Of Rights in the Gold Cup.

Ser De Carrera beat Winona by 0,5 lengths in the Lonsdale but is 1kg worse off in the Gold Cup and Kotzen said, “He has a shocking draw and is a very temperamental sort. I think he will get the trip but how he does will depend on how he feels on the day.”
