Champions Season kicks off today
The Champions Season will be officially launched at a function at Greyville racecourse in Durban today with Gold Circle bidding welcome to visiting trainers and jockeys who are to take part this winter.
Billed as 100 days of racing excellence, the Champions Season attracts most, if not all, of the best horses in training as well as jockeys and trainers from other parts of the country.
The function also marks the build-up to the Vodacom Durban July with first acceptances for the big race due to be announced this afternoon.
The list of nominations will be screened on Tellytrack at around 6.30pm before the replays of today’s Kenilworth racing.
The KZN Guineas and KZN Fillies Guineas to be run in a fortnight’s time, marks the official start to the Champions Season as far as racing goes and culminates three months later with the running of the Canon Gold Cup on Saturday, August 2.
Eagerly awaited will be the reappearance of Equus Horse of the Year,
Pocket Power, who narrowly failed to land the Vodacom Durban July last
year but became only the second horse after Politician to score back-to-back
wins in the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and J & B Met.
With both Mike de Kock and Charles Laird having satellite yards at Clairwood, the best of their powerful strings are sure to be seen in action along with Geoff Woodruff and Sean Tarry while Mike Bass and Dean Kannemeyer will be up from the Western Cape. Already off the mark locally is Joey Ramsden with Nania winning at Clairwood last Sunday.
