Trainer interviews - Scottsville Festival Of Speed
(23-May-2013)
David Thiselton
Kumaran Naidoo runs his two-year-old filly Royal Securitybaby in the Grade 1 Allan Robertson over 1 200m at Scottsville’s Festival Of Speed meeting on Saturday and he took the three-year-old Australian-bred filly by Choisir to see the Pietermaritzburg track recently.
Royal Securitybaby galloped in similar style to her impressive debut win in the Strelitzia Stakes at Clairwood: “She jumped and dropped the bit and her companions went ten to 15 lengths clear of her, but she still beat them,” Naidoo said.
Consequently, Naidoo has declared blinkers for Saturday in order to get her into the race sooner. Naidoo said, “It’s a competitive field, but she’s well and has a top jockey aboard.”

Princess Julietta is 2kg better off with Royal Securitybaby for a short-head beating in the Strelitzia. However, it has to be said that Princess Julietta was sent for home too soon in the Strelitzia by Brandon Lerena.
Trainer Gavin Van Zyl consequently “benched” the stable jockey for her next start. “He has served his punishment,” said Van Zyl last week when confirming that Lerena would be back aboard on Saturday.
The speedy King Of Kings filly confirmed her class last time out when running Allan Robertson joint-favourite My Sanctuary to a 0,5 length second over Saturday’s course and distance in the Grade 2 The Debutante under Karl Neisius. She was receiving 2kg, but the result doesn’t tell the full story.
Having been slotted in behind the early pace, she became trapped on the rail with nowhere to go at about the 300m mark, when full of running, and when she was finally extracted it was too late.
Gareth Van Zyl said that both the yard’s Allan Robertson candidates, the other being Along Came Polly, had been working well.
“Princess Julietta has been a bit unlucky and is the stable pick,” he said.

Paul Lafferty was upbeat about Garibondy's chances in the Allan Robertson and said, “She beats everything she works with.” He added that another big factor in her favour was that she had a “very good temperament.”

Dennis Drier will defend his crown in the Grade 1 Tsogo Sun Medallion over 1 200m at the Festival Of Speed meeting on Saturday at Scottsville with Captain Of All, having won it last year with the subsequently exported Potent Power.
Captain Of All has only had two starts. The Captain Al colt was backed on debut over 1 000m at Scottsville, but found one better of the day in the form of the Alyson Wright-trained Kochka, who was also making his debut and also lines up on Saturday. In Captain Of All’s second start, last Sunday at Clairwood over 1 200m, he showed fine natural speed to lead throughout and win by five lengths, despite being green in the latter half of the race.
Drier said, referring to him coming out again just six days after his last start, “I wouldn’t be running him if he hadn’t come out of that race well. You can do that with some horses, but others you can’t as they lighten up.”
This implied that the rangy colt was a tough and sound horse.
Drier also runs two fillies, Miss October and Sue For Peace, in the Grade 1 SA Fillies Sprint over 1 200m, a race he won with the Equus Champion Sprinter Val De Ra two years ago. However, he admitted that, although they were in good shape, they faced a very strong field indeed.
