Bold pays off for Parkers - part 2 of 2
David Thiselton - continues from part 1
Ashley was pleased with the foal from the mare Lightning Sands so has sent her back to Sail From Seattle this season. Lightning Sands is the dam of Grade 1 Allan Robertson winner, Silver Arc (Silvino). Bold Silvano’s dam, Bold Saffron (Al Mufti), is unfortunately dead, but his half-sister, Bold Choice (Lecture), has been sent to Silvano. Larapinta, the dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Smart Banker (Strike Smartly), has also been sent to Silvano. Another sire standing at Ascot Stud that had success last season was Lecture, sire of Grade 1 Golden Horseshoe winner, Copper Parade. Copper Parade’s dam, Copper Horizon (Al Mufti), has been sent to Fort Wood. Lecture has a book of about 30 to 40 mares, mostly by Al Mufti, including Drummer Girl, the dam of Rock Opera and Hit Song, who were also both by Lecture. Both Rock Opera and Hit Song won the Grade 2 Nursery, while the former also won the Grade 1 Allan Robertson. Ashley and Bev, both veterinarians, have given a lot back to racing. Ashley, on top of running his own veterinary practice, is the Chairman of The South African Equine Trade Council, the international marketing arm of Racing South Africa, whose role is to promote SA bloodstock, encourage foreign investment and facilitate trade. He is also a longstanding director of the RA. Bev, who practices under her maiden name of Zietsman, was a former state veterinarian. She currently acts as a liaison between Racing South Africa and the state veterinarian. In this role she is also Chairman of the import/export working group, which pertains to movement of horses in and out of the country. The dream of every breeder is to acquire a top stallion. The Parkers certainly achieved that with Al Mufti, whose influence as a broodmare sire will be felt for many years to come. He has just finished third on the National dam sires log behind Northern Guest and Elliodor for the fifth season in succession. Ascot Stud thoroughly deserved their joint Breeder of the Year Equus award this year together with Normandy Stud. The fortunes of Sail From Seattle's progeny will also be watched with anticipation in forthcoming years.
