Blind in one eye, shot ankle, can’t stop Lisa’s Booby Trap’s hot streak for owne
IN a perfectly timed ride by Racing Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux, Lisa’s Booby Trap flew from last to first and drew off to a six-length victory in the Loudonville Stakes last Friday at Saratoga Race Course in the United States.
It was an emotional win for Finger Lakes-based owner-trainer Tim Snyder, 53, who won with the only horse in his barn. Lisa’s Booby Trap is named after his late wife, who died of ovarian cancer in 2003, aged 38. “I was thinking of her all day,’’ Snyder said. “This story hasn’t ended yet.’’
It was the fourth win in as many starts for Lisa’s Booby Trap.
Listed at 12-to-1 in the morning line, her undefeated record and heart-warming story saw fans bet her down to 3-to-2 favoritism when she broke from post five.
The horse and her connections got a loud ovation as she trotted back to the winner’s circle and again as they posed for pictures. “I had a lot of fans supporting me here,’’ Snyder said. “It was really good. The fans are unbelievable.’’
Snyder purchased Lisa’s Booby Trap privately for $4 500 in January, making a $2 000 down payment and promising the rest on her first victory, which came in eye-opening fashion in May at Finger Lakes, winning by 17 lengths.
Hind shoe
Bred in Florida by Ocala Stud, Lisa’s Booby Trap is blind in one eye and wears a hind shoe on one of her front feet to help with an ankle problem.
She has won her four races by a combined total of 42 lengths and earned $75 600 in prize money. Lisa’s Bobby Trap is one of five winners from six starters out of the winning Notebook mare Ennuhway.
“There was a lot of speed in the race, and I thought she'd run them down,’’ Snyder said. “She’s a big, long-striding horse, and Desormeaux had a lot of horse underneath him.’’
Snyder hinted that Lisa’s Booby Trap, who he scratched from the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) last month at Saratoga, may come back in the $100 000 Victory Ride Stakes (G3) on Saturday. The six-furlong race for three-year-old fillies is run as part of the Shadwell Travers Stakes (G1) undercard.
“I can tell you I’ve stated the words of his late wife, that I’d like to come back as a racehorse,’’ Desormeaux said. “We believe she's inside her. They have the same heart, and she’s carrying on through this horse. This is what the sport offers. It doesn’t matter what walk of life you are, what group you're from. You can amass hero status through the racing industry, and this is a perfect example. And I don’t think that the story’s over yet.’’ - Thoroughbred times
