Another big season for Bass part 2 of 2
David Thiselton (continues from part 1)

Glen Kotzen finished sixth on the Western Cape log with earnings of R3 212 740, but his national tally of R7 819 325 saw him also finishing sixth on the National log. His highlight was the Grade 1 Gold Challenge win of Big City Life, who was unfortunately unable to defend his July crown due to a setback in training. Kotzen also won the Grade 1 Woolavington with Imperious Star, who also won the Gr3 Umzimkhulu Stakes at Scottsville and finished second in the Grade 1 Garden Province.
Fabiani was his other notable horse, winning the Gr 2 Greenpoint Stakes and finishing tie-third in the Queen’s Plate with Big City Life.
Kotzen’s charge Thunder Key won the Gr2 Diadem Stakes, Viva won the Gr3 Champagne Stakes, Thunder Creek won the Gr 3 King’s Cup, Reconcile won two Listed events, while Katici Princess and Robinson Crusoe won a Listed race each.
The next positions on the Western Cape log were filled by Basil Marcus, who departed for a new career in Singapore half-way through the season, Piet Steyn, Yogas Govender and Stephen Page. Page had a memorable season, landing the Canon Gold Cup with Mokaro on the first day of the season - his first Grade 1 victory - and then followed up by winning the Grade 1 Cape Fillies Guineas with Field Flower and another Grade 3 with Mokaro. Darryl Hodgson won the Grade 2 Post Merchants with Casey Cool at Greyville, a Grade 3 Juvenile race at Kenilworth with Comet Chaser and three Listed races at Fairview. Stan Elley won the Grade 2 Merchants with Kapil, Greg Ennion won the Grade 2 Reserve Stayers with Sangria Girl and the Grade 3 Byerley Turk with Nocturnal Affair, Basil Marcus won the Gr2 Premier Trophy with Red Rake, Mike Stewart won the Gr 3 Chairman’s Cup with Hospitality, and Michael de Beer won the Grade 3 Schweppes 2200 July Consolation with Saluki. Marcus and Yogas Govender landed two Listed races, while Riaan van Reenen, Eric Sands, Michael de Beer and Greg Ennion all landed one Listed race apiece.
