Russian Sage to stay in training
MICHAEL CLOWER
Russian Sage is to stay in training this season in a bid to return to his Cape Derby and Daily News glories of two years ago.
The six-year-old entire horse put up two most encouraging performances on his return to South Africa but disappointed in the Vodacom Durban July, finishing with only five behind him.
Justin Snaith said: “He got left and found himself second last early on. I am going to give him a run over a mile or 1 800m and then decide where we go.”
Mike Bass believes that a change of tactics was the reason for Gaultier showing improved form in his last two runs. He beat all except J J The Jet Plane in the Mercury Sprint and was impressive when defying joint top weight in a Listed Clairwood handicap.
Bass said: “We used to hold him up but I decided we should let him stride along and do his own thing, and he ran two very good races. He will run in sprints this season, including the Cape Flying Championship, and over 1 400m.”
Grafton Street is being given a month off after his Durban disappointment and will return to action at Kenilworth in November. Mike Stewart said: “He hated both Greyville and the Durban training tracks, and I should have taken him home once he didn’t get into the July. As soon as he got out onto Noordhoek beach he was a different horse. It was as if somebody had switched the lights back on.”
