Cheers! It’s Katici Princess
David Thiselton
The Glen Kotzen-trained Katici Princess defied her relatively low Merit Rating of 90 to romp home to her second Stakes win of the season, when winning the Grade 3 Weight For Age Champagne Stakes over the Kenilworth 1 200m yesterday under Mark Neisius. It was the six-year-old Irish-bred Noverre mare’s final start and she will now be covered by Captain Al.
Having been unplaced in a couple of starts overseas, Katici Princess, ended with a fine tally of five wins from nine starts under Kotzen’s care in South Africa. The strongly built mare is unbeaten in two starts over this course and distance, winning the Listed Olympic Duel Stakes by 3,25 lengths in May, and yesterday’s race by 1,5 lengths after powering away having been up with the pace throughout. Katici Princess is owned by Greg and Chelle Royden-Turner of Roski Stud.
The Darryl Hodgson-trained Purple Orchid, merit-rated 98, finished second at odds of 20-1, while the Mike Bass-trained Clarion Call, merit-rated 81, was third ahead of the 8-1 Joey-trained Badger’s Cove, who had the highest merit rating in the field of 101.
The 5-2 favourite, the Dean Kannemeyer-trained Strawberry Ice was never in the hunt while the 75-20 second favourite, the Justin Snaith-trained Dance With Al, failed to find a good kick from a handy position and finished sixth just behind the Mike Bass-trained outsider, Seminole.
Earlier in the meeting Carl Burger saddled a double.
Grey Cossack by Martinelli, his hotpot favourite in the third, a maiden over 2 400m, was given a very good ride by Bernard Fayd’herbe, who circled the field early on when it was clear that the pace was not going to be on.
Fayd’herbe then drove the big horse coming around the final turn to ensure he’d have momentum in the straight and after a duel with the Riaan van Reenen-trained Find The Deli, drew clear to win by 2,75 lengths.
In the fourth a Fillies and Mares maiden over1 400m, Burger’s Right Approach filly, Dulcina, converted her pole position draw into a win for 4kg claiming apprentice Keanan Steyn. Riaan van Reenen and Derreck David combined for a double, while Gerrit Schlechter also rode a double.
At Turffontein champion jockey Anton Marcus rode a treble, two of them aboard the Weiho Marwing-trained horses.
