De Kock and Delpech dominate
Jockey Anthony Delpech had a day to remember at Greyville winning three Group races including the Grade 1 Vodacom Durban July on Bold Silvano and the Group 1 Garden Province Stakes on Here To Win, both trained by Mike de Kock.
In the Garden Province, Stakes, Deryl Daniels aboard Imperious Star can count himself a touch unlucky as he was checked and squeezed by pacemaker Captain’s Gal at a crucial stage of the race. The pair hit the front going like winners before Delpech loomed up late on Here To Win who got up to snatch victory.
Sean Tarry pulled off a memorable Grade 1 double at Greyville on Saturday when Happy Archer won the Durban Thekwini Stakes followed by Gold Onyx in the Premier’s Champion Stakes.
Happy Archer, ridden by Anton Marcus, came from well back at the top of the Greyville straight to win going away from rank outsider s Silent Call and Six Blue Notes.
In the Premier’s Champion Stakes, favourite Kavanagh hit the front a long way out and looked set for a comfortable victory. However, jockey Felix Coetzee drove Gold Onyx out of the pack and as Kavanagh ducked both ways under pressure with Gold Onyx eventually sweeping past to a memorable victory.
Earlier in the day the filly Equiparada, ridden by Anthony Delpech for Mike de Kock, came with a telling late run to catch the long-time leader Golden Parachute to win the Grade 2 Mercedes-Benz Gold Vase.
The Grade 3 Schweppes 2200 provided another grandstand finish with the Michael de Beer-trained Saluki getting up in the shadow of the post under Felix Coetzee to touch off Jeff Lloyd on Super Storm.
