D-Day for Big City Life
MICHAEL CLOWER
Today is decision time for last year’s Vodacom Durban July winner Big City Life. Glen Kotzen will learn whether he can resume training the four-year-old for the big race on July 31 or whether lack of time could rule him out.
Big City Life looked to have a real chance of repeating last year’s July triumph when bouncing back to form in last month’s Gold Challenge. But news of the setback that ruled him out of the Champions Cup has cast an ominous shadow and he is now as big as 25-1 with Betting World.
Kotzen said yesterday: “He put a foot wrong on the track and sprained a ligament - it’s really wear and tear. We are going to have him checked out on Monday to see if we can put him back into work. He looks fantastic but it’s a matter of getting the green light to press on again. It’s all about timing because we can’t miss much more work or we will be in trouble.”
The Woodhill trainer also has Fabiani (only tenth behind Orbison in Saturday’s Champions Cup) and Imperious Star in the July, but the Woolavington winner is not certain to run.
Kotzen said: “We have discussed the July at length and the owners (John and Beth Brandtner of the Nutfield Stud) think it might be better to go back to the mile of the Garden Province Stakes with her. We will decide after the draws.”
Kotzen won last year’s Garden Province with Lady Windermere.
