Vodacom Durban July log
15 JUNE 2010

The latest Vodacom Durban July log has taken on a new look this past month and the battle for a place in Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event is well and truly under way.

After his victory in the Rising Sun Gold Challenge, last year’s July winner Big City Life has leapfrogged the three-year-olds Irish Flame and Bold Silvano into second place behind Pocket Power who still holds top spot.

Although Mike de Kock has indicated that Mother Russia is not certain to run in the July, the panel who decide log positions were happy to overlook her disappointing showing in the Gold Challenge and she stays at 6 on the log.

One of the big gains was Woolavington 2000 winner Imperious Star. In spite of her relatively low rating Glen Kotzen’s crack filly jumped from outside of the top thirty into 14th position after her Grade 1 victory.

The scratching of Noordhoek Flyer, Gibraltar Blue, Oracy and Buy And Sell, all originally among the top 20, opened the way for a number of runners and those to benefit were recent Lonsdale Stirrup Cup winner Ancestral Fore, Daily News 2000 third Lizarre, and last Saturday’s Cup Trial winner Flying Tristram, 16, 18 and 20th respectively while Cape Winter Derby winner Tales Of Bravery has moved up to 21st on the log.

Dropping out of the top twenty was Goat, 20 to 22, while Forest Path has gone from 16 to out of the top 30.

The panel have taken note of Russian Sage’s promising showing in his first race back from an overseas campaign and slotted him in at 30. He is due to run on Gold Cup day on Saturday, June 26, after which his performance will be assessed.

Neil Bruss, recently returned to South Africa and training at Clairwood, supplemented Zimbabwe champion Winter’s Night, winner of the Grand Challenge and Spar Tankard. Currently 29th on the log, his local performances will also be closely monitored.

The next log will be issued after the final supplementary stage on Tuesday, July 6.
