Scarpa Flow can follow-up
Chad Cooke
After the class and quality of the horses that were on show at Scottsville on Saturday, Tuesday's sand meeting at the Vaal pales in comparison and is light years apart in the quality department. But trainer Sean Tarry is sure to be looking at the meeting with keen interest as he has holds a strong hand in the main event of the day, a MR 90 Handicap over 1 450m.
Tarry enjoyed success at Scottsville last Saturday when his charge Captain’s Gal showed her class by getting the better of the much vaunted pair of Gibraltar Blue and Val De Ra to win the Grade 1 SA Fillies Sprint.
Tomorrow’s topliner is nowhere near the class of that race and the choice of his three horses in the race, Scarpa Flow, does not look destined for Grade 1 glory, but he does look destined to record his fifth career win and take the lion’s share of the prize money on offer.
This four-year-old son of Jallad has won three of his last five outings, the last win being in his last outing.
The bay gelding came off a break of nearly six months to contest a 1 200m sprint on the sand at this venue.
He was given a small chance and was easy to back at 11-2 but the price belied the manner in which he cut through the field to win easily, beating the opposition home by over two lengths.
Tarry’s charge will strip fitter now and has won over the course and distance.
He has drawn well and under jockey Johnny Geroudis looks set to record his fifth career win and take his career earnings close to the R400 000 mark.
Main danger
The main danger to the Tarry runner is the Roy Magner-trained Speed Keeper, something of a sand specialist.
This son of Goldkeeper has raced on the sand six times for two wins and three placings, with both wins and two of the three placings being over this distance.
Magner’s charge has been a revelation since having the blinkers added to his equipment and has reeled off three wins in his last four outings.
The gelding has drawn well and has Gavin Lerena in the irons again, the talented rider having partnered the gelding in his last three outings.
The pairing is sure to be a danger to Scarpa Flow and they should ensure a good contest.
