Danse To Destiny’s class holds the key
Chad Cooke
A 10-race card on the turf awaits punters at the Vaal today (Thursday, May 27) where getting the calculations right and pocketing a profit does not look easy.
The main race of the afternoon is the sixth, a 90 MR Handicap over the straight 1 400m trip in which a full field of 14 will face the starter.
Champion trainer Charles Laird is currently lying second on the National Trainers Log but his charge Danse To Destiny, a three-year-old son of Malhub, could be the horse to beat.
Danse To Destiny comes off a layoff of over four months and may need the outing but his form is very good and his class could negate any ring-rustiness.
The colt has two wins and a placing from his five outings and had the beating of Iwannadance in his penultimate start, the latter having gone on to place in group races. Laird’s runner has been to the Vaal twice in his career and has won both times, the two victories being over today’s distance.
Riding duties go to Guillermo Figueroa and even though this is the first time the two partner up, they look ready to enjoy victory.
Trainer Geoff Woodruff saddles the Australian-bred Flybyme and this son of Flying Spur should be the main danger to the Laird entrant.
Flybyme has two wins and four placings from eight career runs, one win being over the course and distance.
The three-year-old put up a good last effort when coming off a layoff after being gelded.
He showed pace and was only run out of it late. He should strip a fitter horse this afternoon and will enjoy the longer trip.
Pierre Strydom partnered the gelding then and does so again today.
Of the other runners, two deserve mention.
Trainer Dominic Zaki saddles the three-year-old Western Winter gelding Acrisius and if the youngster can produce his best he could be in the money.
He comes off a layoff of over four months and may need the outing but has won racing fresh in the past.
Gary Alexander steps out Sovereign Wood, the first time this son of Fort Wood races for the Alexander yard having previously been based in the Western Cape.
Sovereign Wood has shown some very decent form and appears to have scope but could need the outing.
