Antelme receives five year suspension
July winning trainer Pat Antelme has had his trainers’ licence suspended for five years by the National Horsracing Authority (NHA). At an NHA inquiry held in Durban on Monday, May 17, Antelme was charged with failing to get adequate veterinary treatment for one of his horses suffering from laminitis. The board found that he was aware that the horse was suffering from the disease over a period of two to three months but he had failed to obtain adequate veterinary treatment to prevent the suffering of this horse. Laminitis is a painful inflammatory condition of the tissues that bond the hoof wall to the pedal bone in the horses hoof.
Antelme pleaded not guilty to the charge but the inquiry board found him guilty and imposed a disqualification for a period of five years.
Antelme has the right of appeal against finding and the severity of the penalty.
Antelme saddled Gondolier to win the 1985 Durban July.
