Noordhoek Flyer could be something special
MICHAEL CLOWER

Dean Kannemeyer, having had a fortnight to digest Noordhoek Flyer’s extraordinarily impressive performance in the KRA Guineas, now believes that the Vodacom Durban July favourite could be something very special.
He said: “I haven’t trained a horse in a long time that has been able to produce a turn of foot like he did. I’ve always felt he was good but the way he won suggests that he is probably better than I thought. He is a much improved horse.”
Noordhoek Flyer will have his final race before the July in the Daily News 2000 at Greyville on June 5. He has been a firm 4-1 favourite with Betting World for the great race throughout the last fortnight with twice that price available about his nearest market rivals - Bravura, Irish Flame and Pocket Power. But there are doubts about the colt’s stamina over the July distance of 2200m.
His sire Pivotal was a sprinter, although he gets good horses that stay much further. Noordhoek Flyer’s grandam stayed 2 000m but his dam never raced beyond a mile. Furthermore he appeared not to last home when beaten by Bravura in the Cape Derby over 2000m.
Kannemeyer said: “The July will tell but I believe he gets 2 000m. Karl Neisius told me that he went a bit too early in the Derby as he didn’t realise that the horse would quicken as well as he did.”
Bravura is a significant absentee from the Daily News 2000 entries but Joey Ramsden said: “His main objective is still the July and we are hoping to get in two prep runs.”
However, the Milnerton trainer, referring to the setback that cost the gelding three weeks’ work, also said: “If the July had been run in its traditional time slot, Bravura’s Durban campaign would have been cancelled. Any setbacks that occur between now and July 31 would put his participation in question.”
