Drill Hall options for Bass
MICHAEL CLOWER
Fort Vogue, several shrewd punters’ idea of the winner of this year’s Vodacom Durban July, is to start off his campaign in the Drill Hall Stakes.
Mike Bass has several possible for Greyville’s May 7 feature including Pocket Power and Blue Tiger and assistant Candice Robinson said: “We could run a few in that including Fort Vogue. Although things could change, he would probably then run in the Gold Challenge.”
Fort Vogue showed much improved form when fourth in the J&B Met and his merit rating was promptly upped from 101 to 112. Bass succeeded in having this reduced to 106 on appeal, and so in the July the horse looks like carrying 3kg less than the handicappers think he should.
River Jetez will attempt to follow in brother Pocket Power’s footsteps by winning the J&B Met and the Vodacom Durban July in the same year.
“There are not a lot of fillies races for her in Durban so she will probably have to run in some of the other big races,” said Robinson. She will be retired after the July and is expected to visit Western Winter.
Captain’s Secret is one of the few Bass stars being kept in Cape Town and he is scheduled to take on Bravura in the Winter Guineas on May 1.
Mokaro and Noblewood, first and second in last year’s Canon Gold Cup, pleased Stephen Page when worked over a mile at Kenilworth on Saturday morning. They leave for Durban in a week’s time. Page said: “Noblewood looks the fitter of the two and, although I haven’t finally decided, he might run in an 1 800m handicap at Kenilworth on Saturday.”
Dean Kannemeyer is to train for Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, Mike de Kock’s biggest patron. The Milnerton trainer said: “Five nice-pedigree fillies have arrived and there are three more to come. The plan is to try and win with them in the winter season before they go to stud.”
