Bass all set for combat
David Thiselton
The Mike Bass yard, besides talking about their J&B Met runners, also commented on some of their other runners on the card on Saturday as did the Dean Kannemeyer and Joey Ramsden yards.
In race four the Bass yard said that Air Combat had been “working very well”.
On their website www.mikebassracing.com they make him their each-way Tip of the Week. Air Combat has excellent recent form, although he is not ideally drawn.
They said Hilgrove was coming back from an accident in which he had broken his jaw. Mike Bass said, “His last run was quite good and he might still be competitive.”
They said Stunning Do should “run well.”
In race five, the Investec Cape Derby, Bass said, “I thought at one stage Captain’s Secret would be limited to sprints, but was then encouraged by his runs over further.
“The 1 000m on Saturday was too quick for him and he was beaten by his wide draw in the Guineas. I’m not sure whether he will see the 2 000m out, but he does have stamina in his female line which gives us hope.”
In race six, the Klawervlei Majorca Stakes, he said, “Love Is In The Air was badly drawn and effected by the slow pace in the Paddock Stakes. She is badly drawn again, but it’s not a big field and she should go close.”
In race nine, assistant Candice Robinson revealed that, “Noble Act prefers softer ground.”
Improving stayer
In race ten she said, “The pick would be Golden Parachute. He is an up and coming horse with a low weight and he stays well. Bill Of Rights is well weighted.
“He has not been at his best so far this season, but is now running over probably his best trip. Frankie De Wheels should run an honest race.”
Mike Bass’ full and final comments for all of his runners on the day will be posted on their website today.
Dean Kannemeyer said his heart was with Noordhoek Flyer in the Cape Derby and he was more confident that he would stay the 2 000m than he was with le Drakkar last year.
He said that Irish Flame was getting better and better and had won all three of his starts since his debut in which he was slow away and very green before flying late.
In race two he was expecting a better run than last time from Fairs Fair.
“She was restless in the stalls and didn’t break with them. Nothing went her way and she needed the run too.”
In race eight he has Silver Apples and said, “It was a slow run race last time, which didn’t suit her. She will be coming at them late on. She is holding form well and has a chance.”
In race nine he has Hemingway.
“He won exceptionally well last time. He is a nice type of a horse. He is better up the straight and we will keep him there.”
In race 10, the Grade 2 J&B Reserve Stayers, he sends out Tan Can.
“I’ve always thought he might stay, so I sent him over 2 500m last time. He ran a good race and went well with the blinkers.
“He was just starting to pick up when a horse rolled back onto him. He hesitated and otherwise might have run second or third.
“But that showed that he should stay the 2 800m journey.”
Bravura seems special
Joey Ramsden said that Bravura in the Cape Derby “seems special”, but they had not got to the bottom of him yet, so were not sure quite how good he was.
The draw of 18 he felt was a “distinct disadvantage”.
Of his other runners on the day he said, “We have a nice card, they all have chances, none of them are passengers.”
