Bass inducted into Kenilworth Hall Of Fame
David Thiselton
Mike Bass was inducted into the Kenilworth Hall Of Fame in the Peninsula room yesterday and the high attendance was testament to his popularity.
Two existing Hall Of Famers, Terrance Millard and Peter Kannemeyer, were at the function. Bass started out in the amateur ranks, where he trained for six years and during his speech lamented the demise of that sport as it was a good learning ground, where the likes of himself, Millard and Ralph Rixon cut their wings. Bass joined the professional ranks in 1976, thanks to a loan from his brother, Stuart, that enabled him to buy saddles. He started with six horses, but this grew quickly. In his career he has sent out 1868 winners at a 40% strike rate.
The wins have included 180 black type winners made up of 35 Grade 1’s, 33 Grade 2’s, 61 Grade 3’s and 51 Listed races.
He has won the J&B Met four times, once with Bunter Barlow and three times with Pocket Power, and the Vodacom Durban July three times with Trademark, Dunford and Pocket Power. Bass has been the Western Cape Trainer’s Champion on six occasions and leads the current log.
Bass thanked many people, including all of his family, owners, jockeys, farriers and fellow trainers and said he felt “deeply humbled” to have received the award. Rodney Dunn, the chairman of the Western Province Owners’ and Trainers’ Association (WPOTA), called Bass one of “racing’s true gentleman, who has a good heart, is exceptionally considerate and has remained enormously humble despite his success.”
