Laird has five runners in R2m Sansui Summer Cup
Trainer Charles Laird will have five runners in this year’s R2-million Sansui Summer Cup to be run over 2000m at Turffontein on Saturday, 28 November.
The field for the Grade 1 race to be run on the standside track was announced on Monday but the draw for barrier positions will only take place at Turffontein on Wednesday.
Topping Laird’s runners is New Zealand-bred Oracy, who has won all five of his starts to date, including the Dingaans and the Gauteng Guineas. Anton Marcus is in the irons and although Oracy will carry 58kg, he is clearly the stable elect.
Eight Street, who was an impressive winner of Saturday’s Grade 2 Victory Moon Stakes over 1800m at Turffontein, booked his place in the field and will have the services of globetrotting Kevin Shea. Shea will be looking for a Summer Cup double as he won this race last year on Rudra.
Rudi Rocks ran second to Eight Street on Saturday and will have his supporters with just 52.5kg to carry. Paul Whitmore, who rode him on Saturday, is back in the saddle for the Summer Cup.
Laird’s remaining two runners are Likeithot (Marthinus Mienie) and Senor Versace (Gavin Lerena).
However, Champions Challenge victor Smart Banker, who was an impressive winner of a Pinnacle Stakes race over 1160m at Turffontein on Saturday, did not accept.
Magical, who most people consider to be the main threat to Oracy, will get 4kg from the Laird inmate and no doubt trainer Ormond Ferraris and jockey Piere Strydom will be hoping for a decent draw.
Mike de Kock trained Rudra to victory last year and Meet At Malamala will be his sole representative this year. The son of Western Winter was backed to favourite to win the Victory Moon Stakes but faded late to finish 5.25 lengths behind Eight Street.
However, De Kock is a master of preparation and he is sure to have Meet At Malamala in peak condition on Summer Cup day.
Top weight is Sean Tarry’s Buy And Sell, a classy individual who can run with the best of them on his day. Brandon Lerena gets the ride.
