Green Point draws classy crowd
Brendan Pather
Vodacom Durban July winner Big City Life topped the list of entries for the Grade 2 Ocean Basket Green Point Stakes to be run at Kenilworth on Saturday, November 21.
The Green Point Stakes has fielded strong line-ups in recent years, usually loaded with top class horses being prepared for the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and J&B Met, with the race dominated by Pocket Power in recent years.
Pocket Power is giving the Green Point a miss this year, Mike Bass looking to use the Gr 2 Diadem Stakes over 1 200m on December 19 as the champ’s pipe-opener this season, and all eyes will be on Glen Kotzen’s Big City Life in his first start as a four-year-old.
But the youngster won’t have it all his own way with the likes of Joey Ramsden’s Ivory Trail, who nabbed Pocket Power in the Grade 1 Champions Cup, also holding an entry. Ramsden, who won this race with Winter Solstice in 2005, has also entered the Grade 1-placed Bush Pirate.
The General of the Bass army may be missing but the yard is certainly not short of troops with no less than ten entries. Amongst them is the multiple graded stakes winner Blue Tiger who was within half-a-length of both Ivory Trail and Pocket Power in the Champions Cup.
Other notables from the Bass yard are River Jetez, who was two lengths off Pocket Power in the Gr 1 Gold Challenge in June, the ever consistent middle-distance stayer Bill Of Rights, and the versatile multiple graded stakes winner Gaultier.
Dean Kannemeyer, who won this race in 2006 with Jagged Ice, has four entries this year including the lightly-raced Tan Can, who will be having his first run back from a lengthy layoff. Jagged Ice, now with trainer Shane Humby, also carries an entry.
Royal Chalon
Kannemeyer has also entered the Winter Guineas and Winter Classic winner Royal Chalon who ran on promisingly in a Pinnacle Plate last week and should be spot on for this contest. Also on Kannemeyer’s list are two improving three-year-olds, Cree Lodge and Noordhoek Flyer. The latter, given a lofty 89 mark after an easy maiden win, ran a decent third in a Handicap against older horses at Kenilworth yesterday.
Justin Snaith has predicted big things this season from his Grade 1 winning filly Sparkling Gem and she started the season of promisingly with an easy win in the Gr 3 Diana Stakes last month. Her inclusion in the final field would add yet another dimension to what should be an intriguing race
