De Kock has faith in Russian Sage
PALAVICINI took the lead deep inside the last 200m to win the Group 3 Strensall Stakes at York on Friday under Eddie Ahern. He provided trainer John Dunlop with a quick-fire double following the success of Akmal in the Sky Bet Melrose Stakes.
The victory completed an 80-1 double for Dunlop, who felt the track had suited his colt.
Russian Sage’s trainer Mike de Kock felt, in turn, that his charge was somewhat green on the track. He finished last, but the trainer said: “Kevin Shea reported that Russian Sage lost his action every time he went over a mound or a little undulation, but there are no excuses.
I am not going to write the horse off, I believe he has a Group win in him and he deserves another chance.
He clearly needed the run badly after his break and was only beaten about 10 lengths, which is not a disgrace.”
