Punters, take your pick! - part 1 of 2
David Thiselton
The Scottsville meeting on Sunday has eight races with some fair sorts turning out and a few trainers are confident of their chances of visiting the winner’s enclosure. In the first the Pissaro filly All Summer Long has done well in her last two sprint starts over 1 000m and 1 200m respectively and Anthony Delpech now rides. Trainer Bart Rice said: “She is working very well and I expect her to win. She’s our best on the day.” On recent trends, she is not drawn on the right side which is the downside. The Kumaran Naidoo yard is in good form and they send out the hard-knocking five-year-old mare Figurine here from the lowest draw of all so she should be thereabouts. Paul Lafferty is bullish about the chances of Turbo Friday, who will be ridden by Kevin Shea. “She is a big runner. She was squeezed out last time at the start and against the rail down the straight, having run a nice race against the colts on debut.” Stuart Ferrie of the Dennis Drier yard said Stage Diva’s last start could be ignored as she just “went through the motions” and now the blinkers have been fitted. He added Angel Kiss had her second run having come third in “a bad field” and she should improve. He said there was no stable elect in this race. Gavin van Zyl said Enola Grey was a “nice filly and could do well if she wasn’t too green.”
The second is a very open race over 1 600m and it is hard to separate a few of them. The better drawn horses might have to be given the vote.
Lafferty said Urban was ridden hopelessly wide last time, but now had pole position draw with Shea up. Van Zyl said Templestar’s debut came in a race with very good form, adding that she “might be quite nice and improvement can be expected over the distance.” Van Zyl’s other one here, Ficus Rubra, will be ridden by Delpech and he said: “She’s not a great track horse, so this is a leaning curve to see how good she is.” Bart Rice made Silver Back a “big runner if she can overcome the draw”. He added that in her last start, in which she proved she stayed this trip, they had gone a very fast pace and the “jockey might have gone a little early.” Impromptu from the Charles Laird yard returns to the course and distance of her excellent effort in her penultimate start and Anton Marcus is back aboard from a good draw. Craig Eudey’s Sacred Saracen also has a chance after a good effort ove 1 750m here last time, but is not as well drawn this time. Senor Doba could improve on fair debut so also comes into it.
In the third over 1 600m, the Tony Nassif-trained Infallible raids and must have a chance in this weak field as he has finished runner up, albeit well beaten, in both his Highveld starts over this distance.
The Glen Puller-trained Lineal Factor was a bit disappointing last time over this course and distance and could do better. Grey Starling’s best three races have come over this distance and Mike Miller’s assistant Janine Newlands said she was “doing well.” Gavin van Zyl said Lalibela seems “average” and “shows nothing.” Derryl Daniels said Royal Key was well related and was “working very nicely and is improving.” In the fourth over 1 000m Rice said: “It’s hard to win two-in-a-row but Western Gem is a big runner in this field with apprentice De Melo back on.” He said Lune De Miele would “need the run.”
Bold Alliance, Mr Mickey Mouse and Tetelestai should be right there on their recent form.
