Exclaim’N’Exclude on the up (part 1 of 2)
David Thiselton
The highest rated race at the Clairwood meeting on Sunday is the eighth, a MR 103 Handicap over 1 200m and a small field of eight Runners faces the starter.
The Charles Laird-trained Exclaim‘N’Exclude is an impressive sort and was an easy winner of his comeback race on Wednesday. If he takes his place here he will be a contender again. The Alyson Wright-trained Jet Command won his first three starts, including two over this course and distance. He returned from a three month break to run disappointingly in the Listed Umgeni Handicap over 1 000m in his last start. He should have benefited from the outing and this time is drawn towards the standside fence, which has been the favourable side to be on as far as recent trends go. Anthony Delpech gets the ride and hopefully this talented horse, who resembles his sire Jet Master, can bounce back to his best.
Charles Laird sends out Blue Voyager, who beat Jet Command by 4,6 lengths in the Umgeni, although he is now 1kg worse off. Blue Voyager has improved with blinkers and waltzed in by 5,25 lengths in his penultimate start here over 1 000m. However, he did receive an eight-point raise for that win. He is drawn in barrier four but it shouldn’t be much of a disadvantage in this small field. The Wendy Whitehead yard are in good form and Good Thing won well after being switched off at the back of the field into a strong head wind last time over course and distance. Delpech has jumped ship to Jet Command and Sherman Brown now rides. Good Thing has another chance off just a two point higher mark, but might not get the conditions as much in his favour as last time. The Sean Tarry-trained Nimley's favourite track is Greyville, but he did finish just 0,75 lengths behind Good Thing last time over course and distance and is now 1kg better off. Felix Coetzee rides, but he does have the lowest draw which won’t make his task any easier. The Kumaraan Naidoo-trained Haddaway is 0,5kg under sufferance. He is talented, but has not been at his best for sometime now, although he is consequently dropping down the merit ratings.
