Chippendale shows the way
David Thiselton
There was some good racing around the country yesterday as a few interesting youngsters made appearances at Kenilworth and Turffontein.
The Dean Kannemeyer-trained five-year-old Fort Wood gelding Chippendale was a fluent winner of the main race on the card at Kenilworth, a MR96 Handicap over 1400m, under Morne Winnaar. This was the fifth win in 19 starts for the Wilgebosfrift-bred Fieldspring Racing-owned horse. He started 7-2 favourite with the bookmakers and comfortably beat the runner up, the Piet Steyn-trained tote favourite Rosestone. In the first, a maiden over 1 000m, the Mike Stewart-trained Toreador three-year-old filly, Express Princess, waltzed clear under Grant Behr to win easily by 5,25 lengths from the Vaughan Marshall-trained three-year-old debutant by Al Mufti, Celebrated. Express Princess started at odds of 18-1 and showed a lot of improvement. The Mike Bass-trained Undine by Western Winter, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Divine Jury, finished third and is one to keep an eye on. In the second, a maiden over 1 000m, all eyes were on the Paddy Kruyer-trained first-timer Winterberg, a three-year-old by Western Winter who is a half-brother to the brilliant Noordhoek Flyer. Winterberg certainly has conformational similarities to Noordhoek Flyer and started 2-1 favourite. However, he never showed and will benefit from the experience. The winner was the Piet Steyn-trained colt Eagle Squadron, a three-year-old by Jet Msster, who started at 4-1 odds and appeared to enjoy being dropped in trip from 1 200m to 1 000m. He won by 1,5 Lengths under Fareed Anthony from the Billy Prestage-trained Camden Park gelding Six Flags. The third race, a weak maiden over 2 000m, became weaker with the scratching of the Joey Ramsden-trained Galileo gelding Tucana. The four-year-old gelding, Terry Lister, enjoyed being stepped back up in trip and gave all of Steyn, Anthony and Jet Master a quick double, winning from the Riaan van Reenen-trained pair Chosen Kid and Septimus Severus. In the fourth, a maiden over 1 600m, the Eric Sands-trained Count Du Bois three-year-old gelding, Ben Ten, travelled like a winner throughout from his pole position draw under Richard Fourie. Switching out from a midfield position he ran on well and held on despite lugging out in the closing stages. The Dean Kannemeyer-trained King Of Kings three-year-old gelding Humble King finished second. In the fifth, a MR88 Handicap over 1 600m, the Justin Snaith-trained favourite, Naughty Girl, was scratched at the start.
This left the Mike Bass-trained Jet Master filly, Lazer Lady, as the favourite and many Place Accumlator punters were left disappointed when she just failed to get third. The winner was the Ronnie Sheehan-trained six-year-old Doowaley mare, Lassiter, who was ridden by Grant van Niekerk. In the sixth, a fillies and mares MR68 Handicap over 1 600m, the five-year-old grey mare by Model Man, Birthday Girl, was given a hands and heels ride by 4kg claiming apprentice Niven Marday to get up from the Dolf Maeder-trained favourite, Forest Child. The last race, a MR 72 Handicap over 1 000m, the Glen Puller-trained Counter Action seven-year-old mare Twinkle Star, ridden by 2,5kg claimer Jesen Vyapooree, caught Glowing Amber on the line to deny Piet Steyn a treble.
