Keeping an eye on The Weather (Part 1 of 2)
David Thiselton
There are eight races at Scottsville on Sunday and some fair horses make appearances with an MR 92 Handicap and an MR 88 Handicap on the card.
In the first the Mike de Kock-trained Watch The Weather will be hard to beat.
He finished second to Draconian on debut and that race has proved to be one of the strongest recent maidens.
Interestingly this colt is a three parts brother to Jet Master being by Jet Master’s sire Rakeen out of a half-sister to Jet Master. He should relish the step up to 1 400m and has a fair draw with Anthony Delpech up.
The Wendy Whitehead-trained Dish Dash finished further back in the Draconian race and confirmed that form next out when third to Prizefighter.
He should also relish the step up in trip but does have a wide draw to overcome.
The Mike Miller-trained Flaming Al also has a good place chance from a nice draw over a suitable trip.
In the second the Sean Tarry-trained Victory Beat looks hard to oppose on paper as the field looks weak and he ran a close second over this 2 400m course and distance in his penultimate start.
However, the Kumaran Naidoo-trained Liquid Lava was seen to run on from behind over 1 600m on debut.
He might have been 11,5 lengths behind the winner Va Va Voom then, but was only 2,5 lengths behind the second horse, Hunt The Jester, who has finished third twice since then.
Liquid Lava ran over a too short 1 200m last time and is interesting over this 2 400m trip.
In the third, a Novice Plate for fillies and mares over 1 400m, the De Kock-trained Chekeche won over 1 200m on debut.
Her Coastal dam, who won three times over 2 000m, has produced mainly speedy types like Grade 1 Mercury Sprint winner, Disappear, but her sire is Kahal so she should appreciate the step up to 1 400m.
Keen Accord and Zoot look course and distance suited and make most appeal as the dangers.
In the fourth, a MR92 Hanidcap over 1 600m, the Adam Kethro-trained Orbit War can win if reproducing his last run in a strong handicap behind Sharks Bay.
He didn’t settle too well in that race from draw eight of eight, so must get on well with comeback jockey Jessica Goslett and he is drawn well.
Henchman did well under JP van der Merwe over course and distance last time and is well drawn again, while Mathafa was backed and ran on well over 1 400m last time so should enjoy the 1 600m trip.
Sahara, who was once second in the KZN Fillies Guineas, can’t be ignored from an in form yard and Fastnetrock can do better than last time when dwelling at the start.
In the fifth, a MR 78 Handicap over 1 600m, the Yogas Govender-trained Rocking Dane won easily with first time blinkers over 1 400m and gave the impression he would enjoy this distance, over which he has won before. He could continue to progress with blinkers and Anthony Delpech has the ride.
