Raider Detzky dazzles
David Thiselton
When Bold Silvano left the Gavin Smith yard to join Mike de Kock’s Summerveld stable, jockey Warren Kennedy said to Smith, “Don’t worry you still have the second best three-year-old in Port Elizabeth, D J Detzky, he will replace him.’’
Kennedy’s words proved on the mark yesterday as the three-year-old Announce gelding, raiding from Port Elizabeth, ran out a comfortable winner of the Listed KZN Breeders 1600. It ended a great week in KwaZulu-Natal for the Smith yard as they ran third with Harbour Light in the Listed Queen Palm Handicap over 2400m at Scottsville last Tuesday. D J Detzky, owned by Durbanite Kevin Chapman together with Heinz Kruger of Radetzky Racing, travelled to Clairwood on Thursday. He stayed at the Dennis Bosch yard and was taken care of by Smith’s assistant trainer, Gareth Timm.“He travelled from PE very well indeed,’’ said Kennedy after the race. “He’s a very good horse I’ve always rated him. They went a very good gallop. We knew they would and he was in the perfect position, on the rail three-quarters of the way back. “He is a horse that moves up to other horses very easily, but when he hits the front he starts looking around, he’s still dum. But then when they come back at him he finds more.’’ D J Detzky was fairly well weighted under the conditions of the event, especially if one considers that all PE horses were lowered three points on April 1 while the horses from the major centres went up three points.
However, he drifted in the betting from 7-1 to 12-1. In a very open market, the Kumaran Naidoo-trained Vodacom Durban July entry, Al’s Deputy, started favourite at 9-2. The good gallop was set by Gleneagles, who was followed by East Coast Gold, Al's Deputy, Secret Babe, Superfederation, Va Va Voom and then D J Detzky who was about eight lengths back. There was a calvary charge in the straight, but the blinkered D J Detzky was cruising through 0the centre with Kennedy sitting pretty. He hit the front about 200m out and ran away to win by two lengths from the Glen Puller-trained Askari with the Dennis Drier-trained Secret Babe, the Glen Kotzen-trained Aim High and the Mike de Kock-trained Va Va Voom-trained. D J Detzky has now won six times in 12 starts and looks to have a bright future. In an interesting 1 800m Pinnacle Stakes event earlier, which contained many July entries, the Charles Laird-trained Flying Tristram secured his July place after holding on by a whisker under Anton Marcus from the Mike Bass-trained Fort Vogue, who is now the ruling joint-favourite for the July with Irish Flame at 5-1. Marcus dictated the gallop on Flying Tristram and sprinted for home. It was an eye-catching run by Fort Vogue, his first since a running on fifth in the Grade 2 Betting World 1 900 on May 21, as he was keen in the running but still managed to run on well, fighting all the way to the line and failing only by the nod of a head. Fort Vogue will come on a lot from this run and should be spot on for the big one on July 31. Rudra stayed on well for third, with Saluki next best, pipping a running on Lizarre. De Kock, trainer of Rudra and Lizarre, was critical of the rides given to his two charges, implying they should have been closer to the pace in a slow run race.
Sean Tarry was also critical of the ride given to Aslan, who sat in last in the running and finished last. Tarry said, “He’s a staying type and is not going to outsprint them for home.’’ Aslan drifted out from 8-1 to 14-1 for the July.
Flying Tristram rocketed in from 33-1 to 12-1 for the July. Lizarre is at 14-1 and Rudra 33-1, while Saluki, who will battle to get into the race is at 500-1.
