Big City Life to miss Vodacom Durban July
David Thiselton
Big City Life, last year’s Vodacom Durban July winner, has unfortunately been scratched from this year's big race.
Glen Kotzen yard spokesman, James Everett, said in a press release, “He put a foot wrong two weeks ago, whilst undertaking his fast work prep for the Champions Cup. This led trainer Glen Kotzen to scratch him from his run in the Champions Cup last Saturday and after consulting our Equine Vet, John McVeigh, it has been decided that time is not on our side and as a result he will not be lining up in the big race on the 31st July. He has suffered a strain in his near fore and we feel that it would be ludicrous to risk the remainder of his career at such a young age.’’
The strapping four-year-old Casey Tibbs colt will now be rested and would be brought back for the Sizzling Summer Season in Cape Town.
The Charles Laird-trained Dan De Lago was also scratched from the July yesterday.
On Saturday, despite having recently been given intensive starting stall therapy, Dan De Lago stood in his stalls as he had done in his last start back in March in the Horse Chestnut Stakes.
Meanwhile, the Dean Kannemeyer yard said that they had found an explanation for favourite Noordhoek Flyer’s below par run in last Saturday’s Champions Cup at Clairwood where he trailed in a 13,5 length ninth.
“For a horse with such a good turn of foot he found nothing. Karl (jockey Neisius) was shocked. So we scoped him and did a lung wash and found mucous in the lungs, so he must have been incubating something, ’’ said Kannemeyer.
