Absolute Heretic needs to win tomorrow night
David Thiselton
There is some good quality racing at Greyville tomorrow night and the promising three-year-old Galileo colt, Absolute Heretic, from the Herman Brown yard will be one of the draw cards. He runs in the seventh, a MR 89 Handicap over 1 900m.
Raymond Danielson had to keep at him in the straight in his last start in a Novice Plate over 1 600m in the soft at Scottsville before he finally got going to win by 0,5 lengths from Charles Greig, who is no slouch. He showed both his inexperience and that he would relish further in that start and also proved that he handled soft ground. Herman Brown, back temporarily from Dubai, said that they needed him to win tomorrow to enable him to qualify for some forthcoming big races. Mahubo runs in the fifth race, a Graduation Plate over 1 400m and is up against two exciting types, the Adam Kethro-trained Orbit War and the unbeaten Charles Laird-trained Flowing Amber. Mahubo finished a four length fourth behind Pierre Jourdan in the Emperor’s Palace Ready To Run Cup and the latter is currently favourite for the Grade 2 Gauteng Guineas on Saturday. Mahubo needed his last run, a Graduation Plate over 1 400m, but still managed to win. Orbit War impressed in his last start over 1 200m, his first under the care of Gary Rich, Kethro’s assistant. Both Orbit War and Mahubo have proven they handle soft ground, but are both widely drawn, while Orbit War has his first run around the turn. Flowing Amber, the only filly in the race, is drawn well and the manner in which she won both her starts suggests she has a bright future. Anthony Delpech aboard is a further boost to her chances. Returning to the seventh, Monterey Boulevard from the Mike Miller yard looks to be the main danger to Absolute Heretic. The yard was confident that he would win in November over 2 000m at Greyville in a Handicap and he proved them right. Miller said that he is as well now as he was then. Trail O’ Gold is 1,5kg better off with Monterey Boulevard for a mere 0,25 length beating last time, so will have a shout too. An interesting runner is the Charles Laird-trained Mass Destruction, especially considering he is drawn in pole and has Anthony Delpech aboard. He is capable of a strong finish but gets going late and might prefer a more galloping track. Craig Eudey warned not to ignore Secret Symbol and thought he would be a big runner if the 2,5kg claimer JP van der Merwe managed to find cover. Eudey said that, as a big horse, he would not know he was carrying anything with his light weight. He dismissed his last three runs as he had been caught wide and pulled in all of them. The sixth, a Fillies and Mares 89 Handicap over 1 400m is also a fascinating contest and seven of the nine runners look to have realistic chances. The Dennis Drier-trained Candy Tuft has been knocking on the door over sprints and the form of two of her last three runs has been franked as the winner of both, Noble Heir, went on to win a Grade 3 sprint at Turffontein. Stuart Ferrie felt that, if she stayed, Candy Tuft would be a “big runner”. There seems no reason why she shouldn’t stay and she’s well drawn. The top weight, Alyson Wright’s Clarkie’s Promise, has been caught three wide in her last two and from a good draw here could be a different proposition. Lady Bling from the Gavin van Zyl yard won last time when the yard felt she might need it. They felt she had been working better before her previous start when she finished 39 lengths back. That has given them some clues and she should now start to find some consistency. Spanish Wisdom, Wild Ride, Silent Mist and Nighstalker can also have cases made for them on recent form. The eighth, a Fillies and Mares 89 Handicap over 1 900m is also interesting. Eudey’s Touch Of Spring loves Greyville and just failed over course and distance last time.
