Airwolf can handle the hefty load
Chad Cooke
Midweek racing on the Highveld continues in the Free State where the Vaal outside turf track will be in use for the nine-race card tomorrow afternoon.
The competitive card is headed by two 84 MR Handicaps, the first coming in the seventh over 1 600m and the second a race later over 1 200m.
The mile handicap sees a field of 14 lock horns and this, like many races on the card, is competitive and a few runners are needed to have some chance of surviving the exotic bets.
Topping the weights is the Sean Tarry-trained Airwolf. This son of Jet Master was a very impressive winner over the course and distance last time out and he is one with obvious claims if he replicates that effort here. The gelding shoulders 60kg and has to concede weight to Amatol and Hup-Two-Three who he beat when winning last time out.
The gelding has obvious claims on that last effort but this is going to be a tougher ask. Grant Maroun’s Amatol was beaten 2,5 lengths by Airwolf last time out but tomorrow receives 2,5kg which should put the two right alongside one another over this mile trip, giving Amatol an obvious chance of reversing that result. Showroom and Knysna Forest have both done well lately and look capable of winning, particularly the latter who comes off an impressive maiden win.
The eighth, a 1 200m sprint, is as competitive as the seventh and here four horses are the bare minimum that are needed to have a chance of surviving the Pick 6 and Jackpot. Casey Da Lady comes off a short layoff and could be in need of the run but she has some excellent form to very good sorts and if she is ready she has every chance. Worldwise is as tough as they come and if one ignores her last outing, she has the form to win this race. The daughter of Lavery is a five-time winner and enjoys this course and with Strydom aboard has to be respected. Copper Jet and Ex Unitate Vires both have good enough form to suggest that if they have a bit of luck in running, victory could be theirs too.
