Sunsational cruises to victory
David Thiselton
Mike Bass and Karl Neisius captured the Grade 3 Riverworld Prix Du Cap over 1 400m at Kenilworth on Saturday, February 20, with Sunsational as the short-priced favourite Sparkling Gem went missing and ran unplaced.
Sparkling Gem, one of the top fillies in the country, had always seemed at her best over 1 400m and, furthermore, the Justin Snaith yard had been in devastating form on the day having sent out the previous four winners.
However, starting at odds of 13-20 despite conceding weight all around, she laboured in the straight when sent for home by Felix Coetzee and was run out of the placings by a group of faster finishers.
Seal Of Approval set a good pace, with Sparkling Gem in second on the rail with Temair on her outside.
Joshua’s Mistress, Strawberry Ice and Katici Princess were the next three.
Middle
Sunsational was sitting in behind the middle one of this trio, Strawberry Ice, and was travelling very comfortably.
“Cool Karl” brought Sunsational towards the inside for her run and she made up ground under hands and heels before being unleashed at the 300m mark.
She swept in between the two tiring horses, Seal Of Approval and Sparkling Gem, and it was left to Badger’s Cove and Strawberry Ice to chase her home.
They were unable to get a blow in, though, as Sunsational stayed on strongly to win by 1,75 lengths from Strawberry Ice, with Badger’s Cove next best.
Seal Of Approval hung on to fourth from Sparkling Gem.
This was the second Grade 3 race that Sunsational had won, the previous one being over 1 800m. She is by Windrush out of a Model Man mare and was bred by The Alchemy Stud.
She is owned by SH Mackenzie, WV Rippon, GDE Kahan and GD Joffe.
Besides Snaith’s four winners on the day, Felix Coetzee rode a hat-trick.
He was fresh from a win in Hong Kong last weekend, where he also rode Hong Derby hopeful, the Tony Cruz-trained Super Pistachio, to fifth place in the Derby Trial.
Coetzee will return to Hong Kong for the Derby on March 14.
Also at Kenilworth yesterday Vaughan Marshall and MJ Byleveld combined for a double.
