Sonic Barrier to blast them away
Chad Cooke
Rain had the final say at Turffontein on Tuesday evening and one hopes that Mother Nature does not again play a role at Turffontein this weekend where a nine-race card is scheduled to be run on the inside track Saturday afternoon.
The card is a very competitive one and punters will have to be on their guard but the main event of the day, the Racing Associaiton merit-rated 96 Handicap over 1 600m, could hold the best bet and banker of the afternoon.
Trainer Charles Laird is the only conditioner in the race that has more than one runner with Sonic Barrier and Sir Lowry doing duty for
the country’s leading trainer.
Stable jockey Anton Marcus, who has been lauded for his tenatious riding in recent publications, has elected to partner Sonic Barrier in this contest and the pairing look the part in what is sure to be a good race.
Sonic Barrier, a four-year-old imported son of Hussonet, has been at the top of his game of late having won his last two outings impressively. Not only does the manner of those wins instill confidence in his chances here, but both wins were over the course and distance.
The Australian-bred has shown a distinct liking for this track and could not have been more impressive in recent wins.
He sported blinkers last time out and they stay on for this contest.
He will jump from stall gate six and a repeat of his last run should be enough for victory.
The battle for the second berth is not as cut-and-dried with evergreen Bhekinkosi and Gauteng debutante Wild Kodiak both having the credentials to fill that berth. Gary Alexander’s Bhekinkosi is a ten-time winner and showed last time out that he is not yet done with his racing career. The seven-year-old son of Kahal finished a very creditable third behind an impressive Rudra over the course and distance last time out and if the old man of the race can repeat that effort here he might well add another R20000 to his R655 000 total career stakes earnings. Wild Kodiak makes his debut for the Mike de Kock stable tomorrow afternoon and if this son of Western Winter can put his best foot forward, he has to rate a lively contender for a cheque.
The five-year-old gelding has done well over the distance and he should be ready for the contest.
