Maritime Mist is still on a winning mark
David Thiselton
Trainer Craig Eudey could have two winners in Irish Darling and Maritime Mist when they line up at Clairwood on Wednesday, February 17
Eudey said yesterday that Maritime Mist had a bit in hand in her last win, so with just a two point merit rated raise could go in again over a similar distance in the fifth. The weather forecast suggests that the meeting could be run in soft going but Maritime Mist has won in the soft before, although arguably it would appear on recent form that she prefers faster ground.
Eudey’s Touch Of Spring was rated by Raymond Danielson as his best ride of the day and could reverse form with Maritime Mist on paper as she is 1,5kg better off with her for a 0,75 length beating last time. The Drier yard send out Begeera, who can do better than last time if held up. She likes to come from way off them and is drawn in pole position here. Bold Wonder enjoys this course and is well drawn so is also in it while Sunningdale can’t be ignored.
Eudey said that Irish Darling, who runs over 2 800m in the fourth, has a touch of class and has the ability to accelerate from the front or from behind. The form of her last win has been franked by Ginger Hill so she could possibly handle the seven point merit rated raise. Irish Darling has won three times in soft going before. He felt that Bolshevik is an improving sort too so can’t be ignored here either, especially considering he would probably prefer this marathon trip to the 2 000m that he did well over last time.
Muito Amor won well over 2 500m here in his penultimate start while Cyclone Season has won both his attempts at staying trips. Aikido is still feeling the effects of being punished 10 points for a facile win in the mud at Scottsville, but he will welcome the predicted rain. Tailormade can feature if repeating his penultimate start over 2 500m and this does appear to be his favourite course. The predicted rain will not augur well for one of the main drawcards on the day, the Alyson Wright-trained Pegasus Legacy, who is a magnificent looking specimen and brought his good homework to the course last time when waltzing clear in a Scottsville maiden over 1 300m.He is due to run in the sixth, a MR76 Handicap over 1 600m with 2,5kg claimer, Jassurick Jordaan, aboard and on what has been seen to date he looks sure to appreciate the step up in trip. Pegasus Legacy’s only really below par run was indeed in good to soft going, while he has raced in good going when putting up his best efforts. The Des Egdes-trained Thunder Lad is a big horse who did well over 1 600m in the soft last time at Scottsville. He is the sort who should prefer the galloping Clairwood track too. The Michael Roberts-trained Zizou is also a big horse who takes a while to get going before flying late so he will enjoy this course and enjoys soft going. He would prefer a touch further though. Jacob Davies from the Bart Rice yard has ability but is a temperamental sort. On his day he could even win this, especially considering his draw of two. Paul Lafferty’s Vin D’Honneur had decent form down in the Cape during the summer and has improved with blinkers. He has a chance despite a wide draw. The Mike de Kock-trained Honour In Gold can’t be ignored either as he lost three lengths and was baulked late last time when just 3,2 lengths back over 1 400m. He will need some luck from his deep draw. In the third Nathan Kotzen said that Miss Madelein would be fit enough after a rest and gives her a chance. She finished second in her last two from very wide draws in weak fields and that was despite pulling last time. Now she is dawn well and has Anthony Delpech aboard. The Dennis Drier yard said that Candid Girl is “flying” at home and make her their best on the card. Kotzen rated Candid Girl and his brother Glen’s Kenmare House as the main dangers to Miss Madelein. although Kenmare House reportedly didn’t act in the soft last time.
